Cheshire Cheese Rolling 2013
Everyone loves a crazy county tradition, and in Cheshire, they more often than not involve cheese.
Chester, a city no stranger to history and traditions, is the venue for this year's hugely fun and popular Cheese Rolling Competition which will take place on 12th February at 11am.
Eight teams of four are required to push giant wheels of cheese around an obstacle course, comprising hay bales, scarecrows and milkmaids, in a relay up and down Bridge Street in the city centre.
Rules are strict and judges will be looking to see if the cheeses stay on the straight and narrow within the course barriers. Two of the most successful teams will enter into a nail biting final, battling their way through to the finishing line.
Last years Champions, The Cheshire Cheese Company will be keen to regain their title in the face of strong opposition including teams from Chorlton Cheese, sponsors Allington Hughes Solicitors and NFU Mutual, as well as Radio Dee 106.3 and Taste Cheshire . All have been practicing for weeks in the hope to become this year's high rolling Big Cheese.
This annual Cheese rolling competition marks the opening of the 2013 Chester Food, Drink and Lifestyle Festival. Festival Organiser and Taste Cheshire CEO, Stephen Wundke says: We are hugely proud of this competition and couldn't think of a better way to launch Chester Food, Drink and Lifestyle Festival 2013. The competition unites the people of the city and shows visitors that we are a county that's proud of our food and producers.
Chester Food, Drink and Lifestyle Festival is part of the Taste Festival, which takes place at Chester Racecourse from 30th March -- 1st April. Packed with lots for the whole family to enjoy, including celebrity chef demonstrations, over 150 food & drink stalls and kids cookery classes.
If watching all that cheese whets your appetite, we recommend you take time afterwards to pop in to the Chester Cheese Shop to stock up.
