Climbing to the Top of the Belfry of Saint Domnius in Diocletian Palace in Split, Croatia
The Cathedral of Saint Domnius (Croatian: Katedrala Svetog Duje), known locally as the Saint Dujam (Sveti Dujam) or colloquially Saint Duje (Sveti Duje), is the Catholic cathedral in Split, Croatia. The cathedral is the seat of the Archdiocese of Split-Makarska, headed by Archbishop Marin Barišić. The Cathedral of St. Duje is a complex of a church, formed from an Imperial Roman mausoleum, with a bell tower; strictly the church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and the bell tower to Saint Duje. Together they form the Cathedral of St. Duje. The Cathedral of Saint Domnius is the oldest cathedral in the world.
The cathedral was named after Saint Duje (Saint Dujam, or Saint Domnius) patron saint of Split, who was a 3rd-century Bishop of Salona. Salona was a large Roman city serving as capital of the Province of Dalmatia. Today it is located near the city of Solin in Croatia. Saint Duje was martyred with seven other Christians in the persecutions of the Emperor Diocletian. He was born in Antioch, in modern-day Syria, and beheaded in 304 at Salona.
Diocletian's Palace (Croatian: Dioklecijanova palača) is a building in the centre of Split, built for the Emperor Diocletian (a native of Dalmatia) at the turn of the 4th century. On the intersection of two main roads, cardo and decumanus, there is a monumental court Peristyle, from which the only access to Cathedral of St. Duje is to the east.
The Cathedral of St. Duje is composed of three different sections of different ages. The main part is Emperor Diocletian's mausoleum, which dates from the end of the 3rd century. The mausoleum was built like the rest of the palace with white local limestone and marble of high quality, most of which was from marble quarries on the island of Brač, with tuff taken from the nearby river Jadro beds, and with brick made in Salonitan and other factories.
Later, in the 17th century a chorus was added to the eastern side of the mausoleum. For that purpose the eastern wall of the mausoleum was torn down in order to unify the two chambers.
The Bell Tower was constructed in the year 1100 AD, in the Romanesque style. Extensive rebuilding in 1908 radically changed the Bell Tower, and many of the original Romanesque sculptures were removed.
One of the best examples of Romanesque sculpture in Croatia, are the wooden doors on Cathedral of St. Duje. They were made by the medieval Croatian sculptor and painter Andrija Buvina around 1220. Two wings of the Buvina wooden door contains 14 scenes from the life of Jesus Christ, separated by rich ornaments in wood.

HVAR☀Croatia ▪ Franciscan Monastery ▪ Angelus Bell Ringing at Noon
Franjevački samostan - Otok Hvar.
Podnevno zvono snimljeno na kanalu Hvar Live:
Zvonik s druga dva u Hvaru spada u najljepše spomenike renesanse XVI.st. u Dalmaciji. Izgrađen je od klesanoga kamena s renesansnom kupolom. Gradnja je ugovorena 23. srpnja 1507. s majstorima: Blažem Andrijevićem i Franjom i Nikolom Španićem iz Korčule.
In the 15th century a Franciscan monastery was built together with the church of Saint Mary of Mercy. Architecturaly proportional bell-tower, together with the one of Saint Mark and the Cathedral one creates an exceptional vertical frame of the town. Relief of the church portrays ''Denouncement'' and it came from the workshop of Petar Fiorentinac. The church keeps a painting of the crucifixion of Christ by Leonardo Basan, poliptih by Francesco de Santa Croce and paintings of the passion of Christ by a Hvar comediographer Martin Benetović – the author of ''Hvarkinja'' (the woman from Hvar). The western wall of the monastery refectory holds a painting of the Last Supper, one of the most famous paintings on the Adriatic coast made on the tradition of Venetian painters Veronese and Tintoretti. Traditionally it is attributed to Mateo Rosseli, but according to recent studies to one of our painters Mateo Ponzzoni Pončun.
The monastery museum holds valuable paintings, collection of money, incunabulas and a copy of Ptolemy's atlas from 1524. A famous old cypress tree grows in the monastery garden, besides its old age known also for its amorphic form. This ancient cypress does not grow in height as other specimens of that kind, but with its flat branches grows horizontally across the garden. The Way of the Cross leads from the monastery to town, marked by 14 chapels representing 14 Stations of the Cross, built in the 18th century.

Croatia: The rising Star in the Mediterranean Sea
The second part of the journey from Croatia goes from the island of Vis to Dubrovnik. At the time of communist Yugoslavia, but also long before, Vis was restricted due to its excellent strategic position. Also Tito's partisan army had its headquarters in a cave in Mount Hum. The waters around Vis count to the most fishy of the Adriatic. Far above its regional boundaries, however, Vis is neither known for its wine nor for the rich fish rich in the sea.
The Blue Grotto of Bisevo is the main reason for many tourists coming from Split or from the surrounding islands. Makarska is the most famous tourist resort on the Croatian Riviera. After the war in Croatia in the 1990s, the city was modernized with great effort. The historic old town experienced an addition to new hotels, restaurants and shops. With an area of 396 square kilometers, Brac is the third largest island of the Adriatic and the largest of Croatia.
The goldene Horn, a sandhorn about 300 m long, is the tourist landmark. However, Brac is known worldwide, especially among the handworkers. The white house in Washington / USA was built from the snow-white Bracer limestone. Another important place is the island of Korcula. The parents of Marco Polo, the most important seafarer of European history, lived here. Whether her famous son was born here, is not handed down. Highlight of this part of the trip to Croatia is the visit of the city of Dubrovnik, the city of churches and monasteries.

Split
Our final day in Croatia took us back to Split where we had started our big Balkans trip. After a morning bus ride to get there, we spent our afternoon exploring the old town, visiting the cathedral and crypt, and the very narrow Church of St Martin, before walking up to the lookout at Marjan Hill and pausing to watch the sunset with a beer in hand.

Croatia: The Untameable Cardinal (segment)
We present the first 10 minutes of this CRTN production.
Production Date: 2014
“The witnesses mainly were selected by the Communist Party. Nobody who would have supported Stepinac was allowed to testify. Some Serbs and Jews turned up who wanted to testify in his favor but weren’t permitted. The accusations were used by some priests. Under pressure or even torture, some even accused Stepinac. It was a really ‘fixed’ trial”. Dr. Miroslav Akmadža, Dept. of History, University of Zagreb
'In the name of the people, the High-Court Judge of the Peoples Republic of Croatia in Zagreb, in the name of the council made up of Žarko Vimpulšek as President of the Council, on the day of the 11th of October, 1946, the following verdict has been reached: the second-accused, Dr Aloysius Stepinac, imprisonment and forced labor for 16 years, a loss of political and civil rights, for the duration of five years.'
With these words, in a show-trial orchestrated by the Yugoslav Communists, Cardinal Aloysius Stepinac was charged with high treason and co-operation with the enemy occupier, the founding of a military vicariate, plotting the demise of the political system and propaganda against the state.
The Apostolic Nuncio Joseph Hurley came to Zagreb and attended every session. Every time when Stepinac was led into the court, he would stand up and bow in Stepinac’s direction. In this he wanted to demonstrate that the man was completely just and that he was not guilty of any felony. He also wanted to show how deeply he respected him for his convictions, and all his past standpoints and choices.
‘These last four years have shown me what a thorny road a Catholic bishop must walk. I have hoped in the Lord and He has not let me down, instead my faith and trust in God Almighty has increased, just as iron becomes harder the more it is beaten. The more the troubles increase, the more my trust will increase that with God’s help, I will pass with my flock through the winds and the storms that are ahead…’ Cardinal Aloysius Stepinac.

Kezmarok (Slovakia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Kezmarok in Slovakia.
Kežmarok is located in the north east of Slovakia in front of the fabulous scenery of the High Tatra. The town’s fifteenth century Gothic castle is located at the edge of the Old Town and its external walls form some sections of the city wall. At the beginning of the sixteenth century it was owned by the Thököly family and was given its present day splendour in full Renaissance style. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Kežmarok was a centre of rebellion against the Viennese Emperor. Its Baroque castle chapel is a fine building and was renovated in 1658 at the time of the Protestant Oppression. The castle survived the changing times and is one of the town’s main attractions. In the centre of the old town is the Roman Catholic Holy Cross Basilica with its white façade and tall church tower. Gothic and Renaissance dominate its rich interior. The altars and murals, with figures of the story of the Passion, are one of Slovakia’s most valuable works of art. The highlight is the basilica’s main wing altar that features Christ. The town’s Evangelical-Lutheran congregation had the New Protestant AB Church built between 1872 and 1894. Later followed the annexing of a mausoleum for Imre Thököly, who stood up for religious freedom. It was built according to an unconventional design by Danish architect, Theophil Hansen, who featured Byzantine, Romanesque, Moorish and Oriental elements. Next to it is one of the most beautiful articular churches in Slovakia. The churchs’ treasures include one of the oldest wooden pipe organs, a baptismal font, and splendid altar. These were the directives issued within the framework of the Counter-Reformation of 1681: the Articularies. Built at their own cost, completely made of wood, without a stone foundation and within twelve months, this extraordinary building is one of Kežmarok’s most prized buildings.
