Dansuri din Codex Caioni - CODEX & PASSEGGIO - Dances from Codex Caioni (Miercurea Ciuc, Romania)
CODEX & PASSEGGIO: Shovel Dance – Dances from Codex Caioni
Selections from the show of medieval dances presented on the stage of the Early Music Festival, Miercurea Ciuc, July 13, 2019. Dances Passeggio ensemble from Cluj-Napoca, accompanied by the Codex band from Brașov. Passeggio is made up of unprofessional but very talented dancers who set out to decipher dance steps and to perform hundreds of years old choreography. The vintage costumes are from their own production. The Codex band, established since 1996, is made up of professors and students of the Faculty of Music of the Transilvania University of Brasov and aims to interpret European cult music from the 15th-19th centuries with the help of period instruments. Since there are no detailed descriptions of the court dances in Transylvania, they were recreated by the Passegio ensemble, based on the figures of Codex Caioni (Codex Kájoni), collection of musical pieces from 1634-1671, a work with a very troubled history, but of reference for 17th century Transylvanian musical art. Added to this were reconstructed dances based on other dance books in Western Europe. The show took place on the stage set up in the courtyard of the Mikó Fortress in Miercurea Ciuc and was particularly well received by the public who had to break the rows towards the end, when the rain became quite strong.

The Codex Caioni is a compendium of arrangements of sacred and popular music. Its redactor was the Transylvanian Franciscan friar Kájoni János aka Ioan Căianu (1629-1687) who lived in the monastery of Lăzarea. Since the manuscript was immured by the friars at the end of World War II in order to protect it from the Red Army, it was considered lost until its rediscovery in 1988.

MOST Mysterious Books in the World
These strange and unsettling books have been discovered, banned, burned, but never forgotten; They are the MOST Mysterious Books In The World !
4. Rohonc Codex
The Rohonc Codex contains 448 pages and no one has any clue what it’s about. Not only is the text indecipherable, the letters don’t appear to be what what we're used to seeing and none of the symbols are found in any language! It’s not just a strange language that’s mysterious, it’s also the illustrations that appear to depict warfare. Scholars from around the world have attempted in deciphering the strange book but with no success. It’s believed to come from Hungary but some claim the orgins of the alphabet actually comes from the far east like from India. Did someone from Europe attempt to write a book in Hindi around 1300 AD? Routes to asia were beginning to become more common around this time due to exploration from Marco Polo. maybe someone was trying to learn the alphabet and decided write a book from what they learned, but failed, and this is why it’s hard to read? Who knows.
3. Codex Mendoza
This unbelievable document has a strange history which was created to help people understand the Aztec people better. It was commissioned by a Viceroy, Antonio de Mendoza from Spain and was on board a spanish vessel for the king to give it a look. But it wouldn’t make it’s way to spain and French privateers looted it 1616. It laid around unexamined in france for a few centuries before eventually it got over to Bodleian Library in Oxford England to be examined. This was produced by aztec scribes using European stationary and tools.which adds to it’s strangeness in a sense. It must have been quite interesting to see natives at this time beginning to use european tools and being able to communicate with the spanish enough to complete this document. Not only does it show some cooperation from the Aztecs, it’s also extremely colorful and you can tell a large amount of detail went into creating such a book. It’s believed that the aztec went through so much trouble because they wanted to portray how unique their culture was to the Spanish leader. It mainly portrays a history of the people of the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan, a list of town conquered by the Triple Alliance of the Aztecs.
2. The Voynich Manuscript
Carbon-dated from the 15th century, this mind boggling text was found in Northern Italy and is written in an unknown language or code. Much of the origins of the book are unknown. A lot of pages were mysteriously ripped out, but the ones still there have some type of illustration of plants and astronomical figures. The texts have been attempted to be deciphered but with no success. What was this secret code used for and was it hiding something we don’t know? Many have guessed, but even with our modern technology, we still have no idea exactly what it’s about.

1. Sibiu Rocket Launch
We’ve seem quite a few strange books and documents on this list, but this is defitely going to make you scratch your head !Mankind made some exceptional advancements in technology during the Renaissance, but could a spaceship be one of them? . We might all seem to think that it wasn’t until the 20 century that mankind was able to put a man into space but many believe it was much much sooner. Old manuscripts from the Sibiu Rocket launch during 1555 were kept completely secret and kept in places where no one would find them. In 1961, a professor at the University of Bucharest stumbled upon these documents that show designs of a complex rocket. It contained 450 pages of detailed descriptions of a rocket that was fired into space from the city of Sibiu, Romania in front of thousands of witnesses. This was because of the work from Conraad Haas who was born in Vienna and had a special gift for designing rockets. Whether or not anyone actually got into outer space, the idea of designing a manned rocketship was centuries ahead of its time. It’s currently being held at the sibiu museum in Romania, if you want to take a look for yourself.

Manichaean symbolism on Neo-Romanian style houses
How to read the architectural decorative panels on the Neo-Romanian style houses, which show the even level fight between the good and evil forces of the Universe. They symbolise stability in world of upheavals, and reflect the local beliefs with roots in millennia old Manichaean religion, which came to the Romanian lands via the Christian sect of the Bogomils, active one thousand years ago in the Empire of Bulgaria, which also spread further west to Italy and France, giving rise to the Cathars. This is a fascinating aspect of the local architecture and traditions in Romania.

Stantipes - Nomen Est Omen
The Nomen Est Omen Ensemble performed this version of Stantipes at Vasile Grigore Museum - Painter and Collector, Bucharest, Romania, in April, 2013.
The Estampie (French: estampie, Occitan and Catalan: estampida, Italian: istampitte) is a medieval dance and musical form, it was a popular instrumental style of the 13th and 14th centuries. The idealized dance character of all these pieces suggests that the estampie may have been a true dance but there are no surviving dance manuals describing the estampie as a dance. Illuminations and paintings from the period seem to indicate that the estampie involves fairly vigorous hopping.
