We drove from Porto to Pinhão to pick up our boat for a magical cruise down the Douro to Folgosa. Lunch was at the Michelin DOC restaurant with amazing views across the Douro. After our return journey by boat, a short drive took us to Quinta do Vallado for a wine and port tasting treat.
Unexpected treat for me was a Steam train at Pinhão station, so that was duly captured as it passed by - Yowser!

Since I started my trip to the Iberian Peninsula surfski paddling in southern Spain in Tarifa, it made sense that I should finish my trip surfski paddling on the Douro River in Porto, northern Portugal.
The rabelo boat is a traditional Portuguese wooden cargo boat that was used for centuries to transport people and goods along the Douro River. It is flat-bottomed, with a shallow draught, which was necessary to navigate the often shallow fast-flowing waters of the upper Douro prior to the construction of dams and locks from 1968 onwards. Today rabelos are used to give tourists visiting Porto cruises on the Douro River. If you're lucky, you may get to see surfski kayak paddlers catching and riding the wake, as I do here paddling in a double surfski with Bailey De fondaumiere of the Douro Academy where SUP and sursfki paddling are taught. Here we are passing under the Porto's Arrábida Bridge.

The Duoro Valley- Northern Portugal
The breathtaking views of the Douro Valley must be experienced in person. Although pictures are beautiful, they don't translate the feel of this expansive region with terraced vineyards as far as the eye can see. We stayed at Casal de Loivos overlooking the town of Pinhoa. The drive up the narrow road is harrowing , but worth the views.

The Douro is one of the major rivers of the Iberian Peninsula, flowing from its source near Duruelo de la Sierra in Soria Province across northern-central Spain and Portugal to its outlet at Porto. The name, Latinized Durius, may have come from the Celtic tribes that inhabited the area before Roman times: the Celtic root is *dubro-. In modern Welsh, dŵr is water, as well as dour in modern Breton with cognate dobhar in Irish. In Roman times, the river was personified as a god, Durius. The Douro vinhateiro (winegrowing), an area of the Douro Valley in Portugal long devoted to vineyards, has been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Traditionally, the wine was taken down river in flat-bottom boats called rabelos, to be stored in barrels in cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the river from Porto. In the 1950s and 1960s, dams were built along the river, which ended this river traffic from the upper regions in Spain and along the border. Now Port wine is transported in tanker trucks. In 1998, Portugal and Spain signed the Albufeira Convention, an agreement on the sharing of trans-boundary rivers to include the Douro, Tagus and Guadiana. The convention superseded an original agreement on the Douro, signed in 1927, that was expanded in 1964 and 1968 to include tributaries. It is the third-longest river in the Iberian Peninsula after the Tagus and Ebro. Its total length is 897 kilometres (557 mi), of which only sections of the Portuguese extension below the fall line are navigable, by light rivercraft. In its Spanish section, the Douro crosses the great Castilian meseta and meanders through five provinces of the autonomous community of Castile and León: Soria, Burgos, Valladolid, Zamora, and Salamanca, passing through the towns of Soria, Almazán, Aranda de Duero, Tordesillas, and Zamora. In this region, there are few tributaries of the Douro. The most important are the Pisuerga, passing through Valladolid, and the Esla, which passes through Zamora. This region is generally semi-arid plains, with wheat and in some places, especially near Aranda de Duero, with vineyards, in the Ribera del Duero wine region. Sheep rearing is also still important. For 112 kilometres (70 mi), the river forms part of the national border line between Spain and Portugal, in a region of narrow canyons. It formed a historical barrier to invasions, creating a cultural/linguistic divide. In these isolated areas, in which the Aldeadávila Dam impounds the river, there are protected areas: the International Douro Natural Park (on the Portuguese side) and the Arribes del Duero Natural Park (on the Zamoran margin). The Douro fully enters Portuguese territory just after the confluence with the Águeda River; once the Douro enters Portugal, major population centres are less frequent along the river. Except for Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia at the river mouth, the only population centres of any note are Foz do Tua, Pinhão and Peso da Régua. Tributaries here are small, merging into the Douro along the canyons; the most important are Côa, Tua, Sabor, Corgo, Tavora, Paiva, Tâmega, and Sousa. None of these small, fast-flowing rivers is navigable. Major Spanish riverside towns include Soria, Almazán, Aranda de Duero, Tordesillas, Zamora and major Portuguese towns include Miranda do Douro, Foz Côa, Peso da Régua, Lamego, Vila Nova de Gaia, and Porto. The most populous cities along the Douro River are Valladolid and Zamora in Spain, and Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. The latter two are located at the mouth of the Douro at the Atlantic Ocean. In Portugal, the Douro flows through the districts of Bragança, Guarda, Viseu, Vila Real, Aveiro and Porto. Porto is the main hub city in northern Portugal. Its historic centre has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its significant architecture and history. These reaches of the Douro have a microclimate allowing for cultivation of olives, almonds, and especially grapes, which are important for making the famous Port wine. The region around Pinhão and São João da Pesqueira is considered to be the centre of Port wine, with its quintas (or farms/estates) that extend along the almost vertical slopes of the steep river valleys. In the 21st century, many of these quintas are owned by multinational wine companies. Recently, a prosperous tourist industry has developed based on river excursions from Porto to points along the Upper Douro valley. The Douro railway line (in Portuguese: Linha do Douro) was completed in 1887; it connects Porto, Rio Tinto, Ermesinde, Valongo, Paredes, Penafiel, Livração, Marco de Canaveses, Régua, Tua and Pocinho. Pocinho is near the city of Foz Côa, which is close to Côa Valley Paleolithic Art site. This is considered important to the archaeological pre-historic patrimony, and it has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Hundreds of Big Fish in Douro River, Porto, Portugal Rio Douro
In the River Douro, Porto, Northern Portugal, there are hundreds of big fish visible from the banks of the river running through the city. These fish are thick lipped grey mullet, which live in saltwater or brackish water and travel upstream from the sea to feed on plankton and footstuff dropped into the river by humans.

Today we drive what Avis Driving Ratio (ADR) calls 'The Best Driving Road In The World' in Portugal's Douro Valley where the worlds famous Port is made. We start from Peso Da Regua, join the N222 and drive to Pinhao. Porto is the second-largest city in Portugal and one of the major urban areas of the Iberian Penisula. A gem in the North of Portugal famous for its Port wine, Porto is colourful city, cherished as a World Heritage Site. Its unique quirkiness is attributed to the jumble of styles and eras which make up its foundations. On top of this, the city is a lively hub for all ages, sharing a love of culture, food and music which makes a city break to Porto a popular destination for tourists year upon year.
The city boasts an extensive history, interesting tourist attractions and a buzzing nightlife. There is a lot to see and do in Porto.
Take the funicular to the top level and walk across - amazing views. Walk down the streets at the Gaia side of the river and visit the Port Houses. Cafes are cheaper this side of the river too.
The Ribeira district - The oldest district of the city which is filled with ancient houses, narrow cobbled streets and numerous family owned restaurants, cafes and bars.
The Dom Luís I Bridge is a double-deck metal bridge that spans the River Douro between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. At its construction, its 172 metres span was the longest of its type in the world. It has been confused with the nearby Maria Pia Bridge, a railway bridge that was built 9 years earlier.
There are trains that run in the middle of the bridge only a few feet from the walking area. That said, the walk across the bridge is worth the sights and sounds. The views from this Eiffel bridge are wonderful.

The Matthew House is ordered to be built in the first half of the eighteenth century by Antonio José Botelho Mourão, 3rd Morgado de Mateus. The Douro river runs East/West from Spain through northern Portugal. The grapes grown on the terraced fields on either side of the river produce Portugal's famous Port wine.
Trip into the Douro River
The Douro River rises in the Urbión Mountains, in the north of Spain, at around 2000 meters of altitude. It is the second largest river in Portugal with a total length of 895 km; in Portuguese territory the river is only 210 km long and is navigable all long that course thanks to the dams that nowadays are also an attraction, due to the difference in the water level. The Carrapatelo Dam has a difference in the water level of 35 meters, one of the deepest in Europa.
The region around Pinhão and São João da Pesqueira is considered to be the centre of Port wine.
Oporto is the main hub city in northern Portugal and its historic centre is declared as a UNESCO monumental place.
