The man who rigged America's election maps
The story of the man who gerrymandered America.

When Republican mapmaker Thomas Hofeller died in 2018, we learned exactly how far Republicans were willing to go to gerrymander political districts — and rig elections to give themselves majorities in statehouses and Congress.
Here's Hofeller's obituary from 2018, before his files were released:
And here's David Daley — one of the leading experts on gerrymandering — writing about Hofeller's files, which show the intent behind the maps he drew:
My colleagues Ella Nilsen and Tara Golshan covered the North Carolina maps being thrown out by state courts:
If you want to read arguably the definitive book on modern gerrymandering, check our Daley's book, Ratf**ked:
Lastly, here's footage of the maps being redrawn on a livestream — and one Republican state senator getting caught trying to gerrymander more Republicans into his district:

Why Latinos Are Converting to Islam
Latinos are one of the fastest growing groups within Islam in America. VICE's Lee Adams travels to Houston Texas, the home of America's first Islam in Spanish center, to investigate what’s behind this phenomenon and how America’s current political climate might be related.
As a former gang leader, Jaime Mujahid Fletcher claims that Islam saved his life, inspiring him to found the Islam in Spanish center. He dedicated himself to translating Muslim texts for a Spanish-speaking audience.
We spoke to Jaime and other recent Latino Muslim converts to find out why two of America’s most discriminated groups are coming together.

Hermannsburg, 1929: Turning Aboriginal 'Primitives' into Modern Psychological Subjects.
This public lecture was held at the Faculty of Arts, University of Melbourne, on 17 May 2012.
In 1929, the Lutheran mission at Hermannsburg (Ntaria), central Australia, became an extraordinary investigatory site, attracting an array of leading psychologists wishing to define the 'primitive'mentality of the Arrernte, who became perhaps the most studied people in the British empire and dominions. This is a story of how scientific knowledge derived from close encounters and fraught entanglements on the borderlands of the settler state. The investigators - Stanley D. Porteus, H.K. Fry and Géza Róheim - represent the major styles of psychological inquiry in the early-twentieth century. They wanted to evaluate 'how natives think', yet inescapably they found themselves reflecting on white mentality too. They came to recognise the primitive as an influential and disturbing motif within the civilised mind - their own minds. These intense interactions in the central deserts show us how Aboriginal thinking could make whites think again about themselves - and forget, for a moment, that many of their research subjects were starving.

Richer than Frank Lucas. More powerful than the Mafia. He was the biggest drug dealer in America. In 1973 he jumped bail and disappeared with 15 million dollars. He has never been seen again. Nearly four decades later, the fate of Frank Matthews remains a total mystery.
It's as if Matthews dropped off the face of the earth..., explains Mike Pizzi, a retired U.S. Marshal who was involved with the hunt for Matthews.
The documentary features rare archival footage, interviews with numerous sources who previously haven t talked on camera about Frank Matthews and never before seen photos of Matthews. The documentary explores several intriguing questions: how was Matthews been able to operate for several years without being detected? What was his relationship with La Cosa Nostra? Why did the CIA get involved in the Matthews investigation? Why has the mystery of his disappearance been so difficult to solve?
Born in 1944 in Durham, North Carolina, Matthews left his hometown when he was a teenager, going first to Philadelphia and then to New York City. By the early 70's, Frank Matthews had become America's biggest drug kingpin. His organization, headquartered in Brooklyn, stretched across more than 20 states, and he became the only Black gangster to establish direct ties to the French Connection heroin pipeline. Matthews' organization eventually outgrew even the Italian Mafia, and when he built himself a mansion in Staten Island's most exclusive neighborhood (and across the street from mobsters Paul Castellano and Three Finger Brown), he found himself on the verge of a war with La Cosa Nostra.
What happened to Frank Matthews? Despite one of the largest manhunts in US history, there is no proof as to whether he is alive or dead.

New High-tech Museum in Albuquerque Highlights X-ray Pioneers and Professionals
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Albuquerque-based American Society of Radiologic Technologists has opened the ASRT Museum and Archives, a 4,500-square-foot museum devoted to collecting, preserving and sharing the radiologic technology profession's rich history.
The result of three years of planning and preparation, the museum mirrors the high-tech, high-touch nature of medical imaging and radiation therapy. It features state-of-the art exhibits and interactive displays that showcase the profession’s past, present and future.
“This is the only museum in the world that tells the story of the radiologic technology profession and showcases the R.T.’s role in providing quality patient care,” said ASRT Chief Executive Officer Sal Martino, Ed.D., R.T.(R), FASRT, CAE.
Within the walls of the museum are a mix of touch tables, video screens and hands-on exhibits. The touch screens allow visitors to interact with digital media and see the profession in a different light. The videos focus on historical highlights ranging from Thomas Edison’s experiments with fluoroscopy to battlefield radiography during World War II, and the hands-on exhibits allow visitors to touch and feel history. Activities that visitors can participate in include:
• Dressing up in replicas of vintage radiation protection apparel, including lead-lined leather aprons and “bucket” head gear.
• Trying to beat the clock by assembling a scale-model replica of a World War II portable x-ray unit in less than 8 minutes, which was the expectation for radiographers serving in medical field units in the U.S. Army.
• Interacting with four touch tables that allow viewers to peek inside digital copies of historical books and manuscripts, learn about the profession’s leaders, and build a collage of the human body out of assorted medical images.
In addition to the interactive components, a number of pieces of vintage equipment are on display, including a Picker fluoroscopy unit, a 1935 GE portable “suitcase model” x-ray unit and a military field x-ray unit from World War II. More than 300 artifacts are on display.
The museum also honors some of the profession’s pioneers. Special attention is given to Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, the physicist who discovered the x-ray in 1895; two-time Nobel Prize winner Marie Curie, who conducted groundbreaking research on radioactivity; and Ed Jerman, founder of the American Association of Radiological Technicians, the precursor to the ASRT.
It also includes a time capsule filled with ASRT historical materials. The time capsule will be sealed until 2065.
Tours of the ASRT Museum and Archives are by appointment only. Contact Greg Morrison at gmorrison@ASRT.ORG to schedule a tour.

Left Behind: America's Homeless Crisis
Fox News Digital embarked on an ambitious project to chronicle the toll progressive policies have had on the homeless crisis in four west coast cities: Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Portland, Ore. In each city, we saw a lack of safety, sanitation, and civility. Residents, the homeless and advocates say they've lost faith in their elected officials' ability to solve the issue. Most of the cities have thrown hundreds of millions of dollars at the problem only to watch it get worse. This is what we found. #FoxNews
FOX News operates the FOX News Channel (FNC), FOX Business Network (FBN), FOX News Radio, FOX News Headlines 24/7, FOXNews.com and the direct-to-consumer streaming service, FOX Nation. FOX News also produces FOX News Sunday on FOX Broadcasting Company and FOX News Edge. A top five-cable network, FNC has been the most-watched news channel in the country for 17 consecutive years. According to a 2018 Research Intelligencer study by Brand Keys, FOX News ranks as the second most trusted television brand in the country. Additionally, a Suffolk University/USA Today survey states Fox News is the most trusted source for television news or commentary in the country, while a 2017 Gallup/Knight Foundation survey found that among Americans who could name an objective news source, FOX News is the top-cited outlet. FNC is available in nearly 90 million homes and dominates the cable news landscape while routinely notching the top ten programs in the genre.
