An Uplifting Road Climb into the Snow Mountain Range

Ruanqiao – Qingquan
Ruanqiao is a minor tourist draw, dubbed Ruanqiao Painted Village. Buildings and walls throughout are festooned with bright-paint cartoonish artworks crafted by locals, many delightfully whimsical, depicting local farm life, Ruanqiao historical vignettes, and matters undecipherable.
Stop in at the homey, breeze-whisked It’s Alice Café and Food, just off Highway 122. The amiable English-speaking proprietor serves Western foods; many of her recipes she picked up while on extended overseas adventures. Pretty much everything can be recommended, but dearest to this writer’s heart (I’m a repeat area visitor) are the German Fruit Curry and Spicy Italian Sausage & Cheese Sandwich.

Qingquan is an Atayal-tribe community. The Atayal, inhabitants of the hilly terrain of northern Taiwan, are the island’s largest tribe by territory. Beside a large car park close to the river is a traditional Japanese-style dark-wood building that is today titled the Hall of Indigenous Peoples, home to displays on the Atayal and Saisiyat, a smaller tribe whose members also inhabit the Shangping watershed.
Back on Highway 122, above the aforementioned fork, is the Holy Cross Catholic Church. Fitted perfectly atop a high-promontory tip, it looks out serenely over the Qingquan attractions described above. The original church, built close to the river by missionaries who’d left mainland China after the Communist takeover, was destroyed during a typhoon a long time ago. Father Barry Martinson, a Jesuit raised in San Diego – and a well-known figure in Taiwan – came here 42 years ago after spending time among the Yami (Tao) tribe on Orchid Island.
Sheipa Leisure Farm
This high-mountain recreational farm is laid out in three tiers on an east-facing mountainside. Along the middle is the reception building, cabin/lodge-style accommodations, and another building housing the farm’s café, two restaurants, and DIY-experience facilities. On the upper tier are landscaped gardens and small greenhouses. On the lower are organic orchards and farm plots and a warehouse with the owner’s large collection of commissioned artworks sculpted from driftwood pieces.
The cabin-style rooms are spread out along pathways well away from the café/restaurant area to ensure privacy. All wood-themed rooms are stylishly modern, and equipped with full in-room bathroom/shower facilities. Each faces east, toward the sunrise.

Guanwu Recreation Area
The spacious Guanwu Visitor Center is at the entrance of the recreation area. Bursting with information on park and region, with first-rate English, every second spent here will double your rewards when you probe on foot deeper.
The Guanwu Waterfall Trail starts beside a parking lot not far down the road beyond the visitor center. With a total length of 1.5km, it takes 1.5~2 hours to complete. Descend deep into a valley through a mix of broadleaf and fragrant coniferous forest, your reward found at trail’s end – the lofty Guanwu Waterfall. The trail has long, easy sections interspersed with steep stepped sections, the most demanding toward the bottom.
A short distance along the road past the waterfall-trail entrance is the starting-point of the short, easy 450m Honeymoon Path. This brings you to the head of Kuaishan Big Trees Trail, also reachable via another road from the Guanwu entrance. This 4km trail takes about 2.5 hours (return) to complete.

Taiwan Presidential Office Building Tour (Slideshow) / 總統府 (旅游)
The Presidential Office Building / 總統府 / 中華民國總統府 / 中华民国总统府 houses the Office of the President of the Republic of China. The building, located in the Zhongzheng District in the national capital of Taipei, Taiwan, was designed by architect Uheiji Nagano (ja) during the period of Japanese rule of Taiwan (1895–1945). The structure originally housed the Office of the Governor-General of Taiwan. Damaged in Allied bombing during World War II, the building was restored after the war by Chen Yi, the Governor-General of Taiwan Province. It became the Presidential Office in 1950 after the Republic of China lost control of mainland China and relocated the nation's capital to Taipei at the end of the Chinese Civil War. At present, this Baroque-style building is a symbol of the ROC Government and a famous historical landmark in downtown Taipei.
The Presidential Office Building occupies the city block between Chongqing South Road and Bo'ai Road in downtown Taipei. It is designed in the shape of two squares stretching from Baoqing Road to Guiyang Street.
The 130 meter-wide facade faces east down multi-lane Ketagalan Boulevard. This reflects the concerns of its Japanese architects, who often oriented important structures toward the rising sun at the head of long avenues. (This feature may also be seen in Main Library of National Taiwan University.)
The building has ten entrances but only the front entrance and west gate are used for official functions. In the original design an ornate Baroque-style domed entrance hall greeted visiting dignitaries. This entrance hall was reconstructed with simpler interior features after destruction of the first hall in World War 2. The west gate, the formal rear entrance of the building, features a grand marble staircase and porch lined with Ionic and Corinthian pillars.
The two-part main building, six stories high, mainly houses government offices and maintenance services. The office wings feature balconies and long corridor that allow view of the sunlit North and South Gardens.
The 60-meter tower at the center of the building was the tallest structure in the Taipei Basin during Japanese rule. When the Nationalist regime took power, a platform was built at the top floor to enable martial flag-raising ceremonies.
The Presidential Office Building stands within walking distance of the Judicial Yuan Building, 228 Memorial Park, the National Taiwan Museum, the original hospital of the National Taiwan University, the original East Gate of the City of Taipei, the Chang Yung Fa Foundation Building (formerly Kuomintang Party Headquarters) and the National Theater and Concert Hall at Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. A few blocks to the west is Taipei's popular Ximending shopping district with its historic cinema and Jhongshan Concert Hall. A few blocks to the north is Taipei Main Station and Shin Kong Life Tower.
Full open house days are once a month (usually on a Saturday - Check the website for a full schedule: Otherwise, the Presidential Office Building is partially open on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. (Visitors should enter the building before 11:30 a.m.).

Taiwan High Speed Rail
Taiwan High Speed Rail is a high-speed rail line that runs approximately 345 km) along the west coast of Taiwan, from the national capital Taipei to the southern city of Kaohsiung. With construction managed by a private company, Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation, which also operates the line, the total cost of the project was US$18 billion. At the time it was built, this was one of the world's largest privately funded rail construction schemes. The system is based primarily on Japan's Shinkansen technology.
The line opened for service on 5 January 2007, with trains running at a top speed of 300 km/h from Taipei to Zuoying in as little as 96 minutes, reaching almost 90% of Taiwan's population. Most intermediate stations on the line lie outside the cities served; however, a variety of transfer options, such as free shuttle buses, conventional rail, and metros have been constructed to facilitate transport connections.

Second day of our trip to the Maolin National Scenic Area. At Maolin we went butterfly watching and we saw thousands of crow butterflies in the forests there. From Maolin we headed to the village of Duona, passing Duona Bridge, Dragon Head and Snake Head mountains. At Duona we saw slate houses and had Aiyu for refreshment.

Tainan Judicial Museum
The Tainan Judicial Museum (No. 307, Sec. 1, Fuqian Rd., West Central Dist.; judicial.gov.tw/museum/; Chinese) complex, inaugurated as the Taiwan District Court in 1914, is considered one of Taiwan’s three supreme Japanese-era works of architecture.
Blueprint Culture and Creative Park
This is a narrow-lane complex of renovated simple, cement-walled dormitories originally built by the Japanese to house judicial-authority employees. The dorm buildings are today home to an attractive cluster of artisanal outlets and creative eateries.
Little Secret
The “hidden-away” Little Secret (No. 17, Ln. 689, Sec. 1, Ximen Rd., South Dist.; facebook.com/littlesecret17) restaurant is the go-to foodie haunt here. The emphasis is on bringing cultural-creative flourishes to familiar Taiwanese noodle classics, each dish celebrating a regional icon ingredient.
Old Taiwan Magistrate Residence
The Old Taiwan Magistrate Residence (No. 1, Weimin Street, East Dist.; otmr.com.tw), built in 1900, was used as a residence by visiting Japanese royals, most notably the future Emperor Hirohito during his 1923 grand Taiwan inspection.

Lin Mo-Niang Park
Overlooking the south side of Anping Harbor is a giant 16m-high hilltop statue of Lin Mo-Niang located in the breezy Lin Mo-Niang Park. Lin was the young mortal maiden who became the immortal Mazu, Goddess of the Sea, protector of seafarers.
Eternal Golden Castle
This “castle,” actually a fort (No. 3, Guangzhou Rd., Anping Dist.), was built by the Chinese in the 1870s as protection against grasping colonial powers. Massive bastions are found at the ends of the four high, thick walls, with a moat making enemy access even more difficult.
Taijiang National Park Visitor Center
Taijiang National Park (tjnp.gov.tw) is a watery world of estuaries, sandbars, tidal flats, old irrigation canals and small-craft shipping channels, mangrove swamps, wetlands, and aquaculture farms. The white-walled buildings of the visitor complex, built on stilts above retired fish farms, resemble traditional fishermen dwellings and circle a faux “lagoon.”
Anping Fort
This stronghold, originally called Fort Zeelandia, was built at the north-end head of a great sometimes sandbar/sometimes silt island (at high tide) that jutted out from the mainland.
Anping Tree House
Old Tait & Company Merchant House (No. 108, Gubao St., Anping Dist.) and, directly behind, the Anping Tree House, were both built by a British trading firm after the Second Opium War forced China to open ports to Western trade in 1858. The treehouse, originally conjoined warehouses, has been completely overrun by massive banyan trees, creating a fairytale maze.
Chou’s Shrimp Rolls
This restaurant (No. 125 Anping Street, Anping Dist.) is one of the best restaurants in Anping serving shrimp rolls, a local the delicacy.
Jingzaijiao Tile-paved Salt Fields
Just south of the fishing village of Beimen are the Jingzaijiao Tile-paved Salt Fields, Taiwan’s oldest salt fields, created in 1818. This site is a showcase example of how the bottom of evaporation ponds were paved with pottery shards, producing cleaner salt and making harvesting easier.

Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I'm Maggie Tsai. Thank you for joining us. Hsinchu's Fuyan Buddhist Institute commemorated 14th anniversary of the passing of Venerable Dharma Master Yinshun. A special dharma conference was held to remember his life. Fuyuan Abbot Venerable Chang Tzu (長慈) said the carrying out Venerable Dharma Master Yinshun's teachings is the best way to honor their mentor.
2. 北馬衛塞浴佛
Vesak is an important holiday in Malaysia, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Buddha. Tzu Chi volunteers in Butterworth and Penang held Buddha Day Ceremonies to observe the holiday and spread the dharma joy. In addition, volunteers arranged tea ceremonies for children to express their love for their parents. Let's join them.
3. 雙北長者浴佛
To enable seniors with mobility issues to pray to the Buddha, Zhonghe Tzu Chi volunteers hosted a small Buddha Day Ceremony at the community center. Taipei City Datung District volunteers, on the other hand, went to E-Yuan Nursing Home to fulfill the wishes of seniors who want to cleanse their mind through a simple Buddha Day Ceremony.
4. 北幼兒感恩併
In Taiwan, the kindergarten affiliated with Taiping Elementary School in Taipei has held a gratitude event. The graduating kindergarteners seized the occasion to thank their teachers. Meanwhile, a kindergarten in Guishan, Taoyuan, has also held a gratitude event. The children performed a feet-washing ceremony for their mothers, expressing their gratitude and love for their mothers.

5. 慈大種子包
Tzu Ching Club of Tzu Chi University in Hualien, Taiwan, launched a campaign to cultivate kindness and love for the three East Africa countries that suffered form the cyclone-Idai disaster. Many students and teachers participated. Some Indofesian students also want to return the help they recieved in the past. Within a month, there are already more than 300 people showing their compassion. Let's go feel their young power.

In China, in order to help impoverished students coming from difficult family backgrounds, Tzu Chi volunteers frequently undertake home visits to learn about their family conditions before providing financial aid. Recently, Kunshan volunteers made a number of these home visits to scholarship recipients. Take a look.
7. 漳州林明鳳
Also in China, Lin Mingfeng is a Tzu Chi volunteer in Zhangzhou, Fujian Province. She used to have a bad temper beefore coming into contact Tzu Chi. Her daughter's rebellious personality brought out the worst in her. After meeting Tzu Chi volunteers, she began to do recycling and she learned to let go of her worries. Slowly she started to change her habits and tension with her daughter has eased as this family has found true happiness.
8. 終結山老鼠(三)
Many may not know what type of wood or where timber poachers operate in Taiwan. In fact, some people believe the location of precious trees should be kept secret to protect them from poachers. Actually, the Forestry Bureau has challenged this notion by publishing the location of poaching hot spots, alerting the public to be on the lookout for such criminals. Now, even more people are willing to lend a helping hand to protect the forest. Here is our indepth report.

Taipei, Taiwan - Part 1
Taipei, officially known as Taipei City (臺北市), is the capital of Taiwan, a sovereign state in East Asia officially known as the Republic of China. Situated at the northern tip of Taiwan, Taipei is located on the Tamsui River; it is about 25 km southwest of Keelung, a port city on the Pacific Ocean. It lies in the Taipei Basin, an ancient lakebed bounded by the two relatively narrow valleys of the Keelung and Xindian rivers, which join to form the Tamsui River along the city's western border. The city proper is home to an estimated 2,693,672 people. Taipei, New Taipei, and Keelung together form the Taipei–Keelung metropolitan area with a population of 6,900,273, the 40th most-populous urban area in the world. They are administered under three municipal governing bodies. Taipei sometimes refers to the whole metropolitan area, while Taipei City refers to the city proper. Taipei City proper is surrounded on all sides by another city called New Taipei.
Taipei is the political, economic, and cultural center of Taiwan. Considered to be a global city, Taipei is part of a major industrial area. Railways, high-speed rail, highways, airports, and bus lines connect Taipei with all parts of the island. The city is served by two airports – Taipei Songshan and Taiwan Taoyuan.

Hehuanshan (Mt. Hehuan) is situated in the area neighboring the Hualien and Nantou Counties. It is the watershed for several major rivers in Taiwan including Dajia, Zhoshui, and Liwu Rivers. The steep 457-hectare area is situated between 2300 and 3400 meters above sea level, at the highest elevation of any of the National Taiwan Forest Recreation Areas. At a mean annual temperature of only 6ºC, Hehuanshan has cool summers and cold winters. It is the best place to enjoy mountain flowers, winter whites, and the mountain terrain landscape.
The nearby alpines of Hehuan Main Peak, East Peak, North Peak, West Peak, Shimen Mountain, Shimen North Peak, and Hehuanjian Moutain are all well-known. Since they are each higher than 3,000 meters in elevation, these mountains are challenging to climb. Subsequently, they are the considered some of the best mountains for climbing, each earning designations among the Top Hundred Peaks. To the distance, the landscape consists of Qilailienfeng, Nanhutaishan and Chungyanjian Mountains of the Central Mountain range. This magnificent mountain landscape is very endearing. Due to low temperatures in winter, (in January, the coldest month, the mean average temperature is -1.2ºC), it snows each time that a cold front arrives. Snow-covered firs and icicles make this area the best place for enjoying the snow. Since the area is situated at a high elevation seemingly very close to the clouds, visitors can look up to observe the magnificent sunrise, sea of clouds, and sunset glow, all of which are unique views in Taiwan. On clear autumn days, stratus, cirrus and cumulus clouds float amongst each other, as if they are intermixing and mingling. Since this area is dark with minimal light, it has become the best mountain location for watching the stars in Taiwan.
