Camp Blount Groundbreaking 2019
Historic Camp Blount, located on the banks of the Elk River two miles south of downtown Fayetteville, TN, is the site where General Andrew Jackson mustered troops for the Creek Indian War in October of 1813 as part of the War of 1812. The warring Creeks had massacred 250 men, women and children at Fort Mims. The Creeks were severely defeated at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend with the death of 900 braves and the loss of about 45 men in Jackson's forces. Nine months later, soldiers under Jackson again mustered at Camp Blount and marched to New Orleans to be a part of the Battle of New Orleans and the final defeat of the British forces and the end to Great Britain's goal to colonize America.
This lead to General Andrew Jackson becoming the 7th President of the United States, and the turnout of Tennessee volunteers gave the state its nickname, the Volunteer State.
The 40-acre Camp Blount property was officially purchased by the Tennessee Historical Commission in October of 2016 to be developed as the Camp Blount Historic Site. Plans for the Historic Site include:

Camp Blount 200th to be celebrated
Fayetteville and Lincoln County Tennessee will have the opportunity to become immersed in history as Fayetteville marks the Camp Blount Bicentennial with an impressive celebration to be held here on Sept. 27-28.
Camp Blount, situated on the Elk River just south of the river bridge in Fayetteville, marks the point where Tennessee troops rendezvoused in early October of 1813 during what was known as the War of 1812, a 32-month conflict between the United States and Great Britain. At that same time, the United States was also embroiled in a civil war with the Creek Nation.
The event commemorating the 200th anniversary of Camp Blount will also be held on the historic site and include a significant living history, said key organizers during a planning meeting Wednesday afternoon at the Fayetteville/Lincoln County Museum and Civic Center.

Spearheaded by Dr. Farris Beasley and the Camp Blount Memorial Park Committee, bicentennial activities will feature a living history that will accurately portray what occurred during that historic era. There will also be vendors, sutlers and actual interpreters representing Gen. Andrew Jackson, Ensign Sam Houston, Pvt. David Crockett, Dr. Charles McKinney and Col. John Coffee, all central figures in recognized for their parts in the war.
Up to 100 interpreters -- or re-enactors -- from Tennessee, Alabama, Texas and other states are expected to participate in the event, and each will be costumed in authentic clothing of the period.
There will also be a few period high-end vendors selling hats and leather items, canteens and clothing pieces, said Myers Brown, archivist for the state museum and state chairman of the War of 1812 Commission, during Wednesday's meeting.
Camp Blount planning (6)The Camp Blount Bicentennial Celebration will be held in a section of the Camp Blount muster site located in a strip of meadow in the area behind Hardee's Restaurant. There will be no admission charge, according to plans.
The first day of the event, Friday, Sept. 27, has been designated as a School Day so that students may learn of the heritage of the community and historical figures who participated locally.
In addition to the rich history presented, the event is expected to also have a positive economic impact on the economy here, benefiting local restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations and hotels. Long term goals call for the site to continue drawing people to Fayetteville and for having history shared with future generations.
In addition to its role in the War of 1812, Camp Blount served as the mustering ground for thousands of soldiers at different times in history. Though its recognition is based largely on its connection to Jackson, the location was also used in the Seminole Wars of 1818 and 1836, as well as during the Civil War, when it is likely that both Federal and Confederate soldiers bivouacked there.
Camp Blount planning (10)In late September 1813, the call for troops to participate in the Creek War prompted the enlistment of over 3,500 Tennessee volunteers. The militant Creek Indians, armed by Great Britain, had attacked Fort Mims and massacred 250 men, women and children. Under the leadership of Jackson, then major general of the Tennessee militia, most of the soldiers from the Middle Tennessee area were ordered by Gov. Willie Blount to gather at the great oaks on the Elk River here.
At that time Fayetteville was a fledgling community just miles north of Tennessee and present-day Alabama border.
People were fearful, said Beasley. This happened four years after Fayetteville was founded.
Jackson left Fayetteville in October 1813 and met and defeated the Creek Indians at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, thus ending the Indian threat on the frontier. Less than a year later, the troops again assembled at Camp Blount and then marched to New Orleans. Under Jackson, they defeated the British and ended the War of 1812 and the final attempt by Great Britain to colonize America.

CSX Stack Train Dellrose, Tennessee
This CSX stack train is southbound at Dellrose, TN. The General Electric locomotives are CSX 7326 and 7343. Dellrose in north of the Elk River in Southern Tennessee, between Nashville and Birmingham. This video was shot near where the depot (destroyed in a derailment) once stood.

A Night of Stark Terror
A documentary on the super tornado outbreak of April 3, 1974, which claimed six lives in Lincoln County and destroyed homes and farms here, will be aired in the coming days.
A Night of Stark Terror is a collaborative effort of The National Weather Service, Fayetteville Public Utilities and The Elk Valley Times.
The 40th anniversary of the April 3, 1974 super tornado outbreak occurred on Thursday, April 3rd, said Tim Troutman with the National Weather Service, who has helped spearhead the documentary project. The National Weather Service has collaborated with Fayetteville Public Utilities and The Elk Valley Times to produce a documentary that will remember and re-visit the super tornado outbreak and how it affected Lincoln county residents.
It is hoped that this documentary and other related April 3, 1974 web page information located at will serve as a remembrance to the ones that were lost in the tornado outbreak, further documenting the event and also serve as a reminder to residents that we are in a severe weather active region, Troutman said.
The documentary was aired on local FPU channel 6, the FPU web site and The Times' website, elkvalleytimes.com, and will include several interviews, testimonials and footage of historic pictures and video from the April 3, 1974 super tornado outbreak. Viewers will hear from eyewitnesses to the day of terror, including Donna Gill, Bobby and Joyce Plunkett, Donnie Ogle, members of the Caldwell family, Joe Tom Hudson, Harv Edwards, the Gardner family and Jeff Walker.
I have read there were 148 tornadoes, and seven were F-5's, said Britt Dye, CEO and general manager of FPU. Thirteen states were hit on the 3rd and 4th of April, 1974. 2,014 miles were covered by the tornadoes. FPU became a StormReady Supporter in 2008. Working with the National Weather Service as part of the StormReady Program shows our commitment to being prepared as best we can for extreme weather conditions.
I would like to thank The Elk Valley Times and The National Weather Service for giving us this great opportunity to be a part of documenting the tornadoes of 1974, Dye added. The historic documentary will be aired beginning on Friday, April 11, and Saturday, April 12, beginning at 7:30 p.m. We would also like to thank the victims of the 1974 tornado for allowing us to come in their homes to video and go through their pictures to relive their painful stories.
A special thanks is extended to The Times' readers who responded to our call for photos from the super tornado outbreak, said Sandy Williams, The Times' news editor. The photos our readers shared, which are included in the documentary, show the devastation left in the wake of that deadly storm and remind us that it truly was a day of terror for our community and those impacted by the storms.

CSX Grain Train Crosses L&N Single Lane Underpass
A CSX grain train is slowly grinding south in Giles County, Tennessee. The train is crossing the ridge that separates the Elk River Valley and the Tennessee River Valley. During the steam era this grade had a pusher, based in Wheelerton, TN. Modern trains are often dramatically slowed by the steep grade here.
In just a few miles this train will reach Ardmore, TN and the Alabama / Tennessee state line.
This single lane underpass was built by the L&N when this line was constructed, around 1915. There is another of these just a few miles north of this location (and there is a short tunnel on the railroad between these underpasses). Several more similar underpasses were built near Brentwood, TN. This line was built to bypass the old main between Athens, AL and Brentwood, TN, and passes through Lewisburg, TN.
The underpass is a favorite target for local vandals.
The locomotives are CSX 750 and CSX 401.
700 Pound Snake Pulled out of Lake in North Carolina
Giant 700 pound snake caught in lake in Proctor, North Carolina. The giant man eating python was measured at 98 feet long. Police were contacted to see if there have been any recently filed missing person reports as a snake this big could have surely eaten a human.
This giant snake is massive and just gorgeous, but it didn't take long to find out that the STORY behind it... was fake, just another hoax.
While the image is indeed real, I think the size of the giant snake could have been exaggerated due to the camera angle
Nevertheless, this snake is still huge, but where did it come from? The markings on it's skin looks similar to that of a reticulated python native to Southeast Asia. After playing around with a little Google translate, the mystery was finally solved.
This giant python came from Indonesia and after some rough translating, it turns out that it was discovered this last Thanksgiving near the village of Belinyu City. It was found by accident by a group of construction workers who severely injured the reptile while knocking down a large dead tree in which the python was sleeping inside of. The workers put the dying snake out of it's misery and buried it.
It's sad to see such an incredible animal killed, especially one that could have been a new world record size. I wish there were more pictures so we could get a better idea of just how large it was.

CSX Double-Stack Train with Five Locomotives - CSX 467, 7716, 393, 3078, 980
A CSX double-stack container train is heading north at the north switch of Dellrose Siding. This is just north of the Elk River, and the train is heading towards Nashville.
This siding is only a few years old. It is just south of the older, shorter Woodrow Siding.
The locomotives are CSX 467, CSX 7716, CSX 393, CSX 3078 and CSX 980.
GE Dash Eights Lead CSX Double-Stack Container Train - 7591, 7786
A CSX southbound double-stack train heads south at the north of end Ardmore Siding. This was shot in Tennessee, but when the rear passes the locomotives will already be in Alabama. (The town of Ardmore sits on the state line and is in both states, and is in two counties in each state.)
This train has just climbed the steep grade out of the Elk River Valley and crossed Ardmore Ridge. It's now descending into the Tennessee River Valley.
The locomotives are CSX 7591 and CSX 7786.
