The Northern Cape is the largest and most sparsely populated province of South Africa. It was created in 1994 when the Cape Province was split up. Its capital is Kimberley. It includes the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, part of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, an international park shared with Botswana. It also includes the Augrabies Falls and the diamond mining regions in Kimberley and Alexander Bay. The Namaqualand region in the west is famous for its Namaqualand daisies. The southern towns of De Aar and Colesberg, in the Great Karoo, are major transport nodes between Johannesburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. In the northeast, Kuruman is known as a mission station and also for its artesian spring, the Eye of Kuruman. The Orange River flows through the province, forming the borders with the Free State in the southeast and with Namibia to the northwest. The river is also used to irrigate the many vineyards in the arid region near Upington. Native speakers of Afrikaans comprise a higher percentage of the population in the Northern Cape than in any other province. The Northern Cape's four official languages are Afrikaans, Tswana, Xhosa, and English. Minorities speak the other official languages of South Africa, and a few people speak indigenous languages such as Nama and Khwe. The provincial motto, Sa ǁa ǃaĩsi 'uĩsi , is in the Nǀu language of the Nǁnǂe people. It was given in 1997 by one of the language's last speakers, Ms. Elsie Vaalbooi of Rietfontein, who has since died. It was South Africa's first officially registered motto in a Khoisan language. Subsequently, South Africa's national motto, ǃKe e ǀxarra ǁke, was derived from the extinct Northern Cape ǀXam language.

The Eye of Kuruman (Afrikaans: Die Oog) is a spring in the town of Kuruman (part of the Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality) in the province of Northern Cape, South Africa. One source states it is the largest known natural spring in the southern hemisphere., although the Te Waikoropupū Springs in Golden Bay, New Zealand has been reliably measured at an average flow some 60 times greater (14 m3/second).The spring forms a small lake in the middle of the town, directly on the N14 road and is located in a fenced park. It has a daily flow of about 20,000 m³ of crystal-clear, potable water. Water from the spring supplies the town of Kuruman.

Kathu, Northern Cape

Kathu is a town in South Africa and the iron ore capital of the Northern Cape province. Its name means town under the trees, after the Camel Thorn forest it is situated in. The phrase the town under the trees was coined by an engineer working in the town in the early 1990 as part of a tourism marketing drive, together with the accompanying graphic. It was intended to be a marketing slogan. The meaning of the word Kathu has anecdotally been attributed to a porridge brewed by the local population from the powder found in the pods of the Camel Thorn trees.

Kathu was founded in the late 60's early 70's.

Kathu is perfectly in between Upington and Vryburg with about a 2-hour drive to each. Kimberley is a 3-hour drive away.

The Camel Thorn tree Acacia Erioloba forest is one of only two in the world with the other being between Mariental and Rehoboth in Namibia. Its uniqueness was recognized in the early 1920s when it was declared a State Forest. In 1995, it was registered as a Natural Heritage Site. The Kathu forest is approximately 4000 hectares in size and these Camel thorns trees provide support for large Sociable Weaver’s nests and are used by many other bird and animal species. In fact, surveys have shown a moderate to high diversity in animal and plant species, including several Red Data, endemic and protected species in and around the forest. Bigger trees in the forest are reckoned to be older than 300 years.

Mining
The town and the accompanying industrial area of Sishen came into being because of iron ore mining activity in the Kalahari — it has one of the five largest open-cast iron ore mining operations in the world.[citation needed] The primary drilling and 'load and haul' mining equipment used by the mine include giant ore trucks that bear about 260 ton of ore with each load. Mining shovels used to load these trucks can weigh more than 800 tons, and drilling equipment includes drills that can drill up to 400 mm holes for blasting purposes. Some of the world's longest ore trains travel through harsh territory on the Sishen-Saldanha railway to offload their cargo at Saldanha Bay. Kumba Iron Ore is the principal mine operator in Kathu.

OASIS IN THE DESERT | THE EYE

The Eye of Kuruman is an oasis in the middle of the Kalahari. The Eye is said to be the largest fresh water spring, a bore hole in the southern hemisphere, and is claimed by the locals to have healing properties. For the San Bushman ancient people this must have been a great symbol of abundance finding so much cool, refreshing, clean and revitalizing water in such a dry and hot area. The Eye of Kuruman is a spectacular natural phenomenon that is nestled in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. It is the largest natural fountain in the Southern Hemisphere, delivering an astounding 20 to 30 million litres of fresh water every day. This water is cool and clear, and is essential to the survival of the plants, animals and people in the area as it is the main source of potable water for these ones. It feed the Kuruman River and flows into two long irrigation canals.
The Eye was discovered in 1801, when an expedition called Truter Somerville was being conducted. It was only a little while later that a mission station was established here with the purpose of educating the locals and converting them to Christianity. For this reason, the Eye was known as the Fountain of Christianity for some time, while the local Tswana people dubbed it Gasegonyane (which translates to ‘small calabash with bubbling water’). The Eye was declared a National Monument in 1992 and continues to be historically and naturally relevant.
Although fishing is prohibited, there is an abundance of fish species living in these waters. These include carp, goldfish, barb and blue carper. The pseudocrenilabrus philander is also found here, which is significant as this is an endangered species and a real treat to find. Water lilies float on the surface of the exquisite crystal waters to make the scene even lovelier.
The Eye of Kuruman spring culminates in a lake, which can be found in the centre of the little town. This is not only aesthetically beautiful, but also important as a water source for the homes and businesses in the town.
