Driving around Hamburg, New York
Hamburg is a town in Erie County, New York, United States.
The Erie County Fair has operated in Hamburg since 1868. Currently, the fair takes place at the Hamburg Fairgrounds. The Fair is situated on a 275-acre (111 ha) plot of land near the village of Hamburg. The fair is produced by the Erie County Agricultural Society, and runs for twelve days in August. Sky Wheel Erie County Fair Hamburg, NY 2019 Set Up & Operating Video
It has been called by carnival historians the “King of the Midway.” A traveling amusement ride so unique, dazzling and spectacular that it defined the Erie County Fair midway for generations of Western New Yorkers. In 2019, Erie County Agricultural Society announced that the James E. Strates Shows would feature the return of the legendary 80-foot-high double Ferris wheel called the Sky Wheel on its midway. This limited, one-time engagement was part of the celebration commemorating the 95th year of the Strates Shows at the Erie County Fair.
“The double Ferris wheel is one of the most requested bygone attractions that fairgoers continually ask us to bring back,” said Marty Biniasz, Erie County Fair Marketing Manager. “Not only is this rare ride an icon of the Strates Shows midway, it also has a deep Buffalo-Niagara connection as the Sky Wheel ride was once manufactured by the Allan Herschell Co.”
The Sky Wheel debuted on the Erie County Fair’s midway in 1963 and was a featured attraction until 1994. The ride made a brief reappearance between 1996 and 1998 before it was retired by the Strates Shows. Once a common attraction at major county and state fairs, the fully restored version of the ride scheduled to appear in 2019 is one of only five operating Sky Wheel rides remaining in North America. Rides on the Sky Wheel will be part of all Strates Shows one price ride days and Fun Card ticket programs.
“The Sky Wheel seats 32 people in 16 seats,” said Biniasz. “Riders experience the sensation of a rapid acceleration being propelled into the sky and then the feeling of a free fall as the wheels rotate downwards. Although there have been faster, taller and more modern rides over the decades, the adrenalin rush you get from the Sky Wheel is in a class of its own.”
In 1960, the Allan Herschell Co., then a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Wiesner-Rapp Company, purchased the Sky Wheel patents and manufacturing rights from brothers Curtis and Elmer Velare of Long Beach, California. From 1960 until the sale of the Herschell Company’s assets in 1970 to Chance Manufacturing of Wichita, Kansas, Sky Wheels were built at the Herschell plant located at 1165 Clinton Street in East Buffalo. At the time of the sale to Chance, the Allan Herschell Company was the largest manufacturer of amusement rides in North America.
The addition of the Sky Wheel to the 2019 Erie County Fair midway celebrated the exclusive relationship between the Erie County Fair and the Strates Shows. Now in its 95th year, this partnership is considered a historical milestone in the modern amusement industry. According to the Outdoor Amusement Business Association, the relationship between the Strates Shows and the Erie County Fair is the longest continuous run of any carnival midway in the United States.
Unique among today’s amusement operators, The Strates Shows is the only “railroad carnival” in North America. Each spring, the Strates Shows leaves its winter quarters in Florida and begins an eight-month journey by rail that transports their equipment to fairgrounds across the eastern seaboard and northeast. The “fair train,” as commonly known in Western New York, currently is comprised of over 50 rail cars.
Experience Fair Camp at the Erie County Fair, Hamburg, New York
Has you child ever wanted to sleep in a barn, assist with farm chores, show an animal in a livestock competition or work with a fair food concessionaire? The Erie County Agricultural Society’s award winning Fair Camp program is a two and half day agricultural and county fair immersion experience for children ages 8-10 and an accompanying parent. Fair Camp was created to stimulate an interest in agriculture, a passion for learning and a love of the Erie County Fair.
Under the supervision of trained Camp Counselors, children gain first-hand experience in raising, caring for and showing livestock as well as receive a “behind the scenes” look at the Fair. The Camp hosts two sessions, one each week of the Fair. Campers and a parent/guardian live on the Fairgrounds during the session in our “hay loft” located inside the Agriculture Discovery Center. Number of participants for each session is limited to six children and a parent. Small groups insure each child gets a unique experience and personal attention.
Information at ECFair.org. There is no cost to attend Fair Camp, including meals and entertainment, as the program is underwritten by the Erie County Agricultural Society.

For generations, the annual arrival of the James E. Strates Shows train has been a highly anticipated occasion for fairgoers and enthusiasts of Americana. The movement of the colorful freight train filled with wagons and amusement rides into the Village of Hamburg is a signal that opening day of the Erie County Fair is just a week away.
On Wednesday, August 1st the Fair Train arrived at the historic Erie Railroad Depot in Hamburg as the Strates Shows begins its 94th season with the Erie County Fair. The depot is located at the corner of Union and Scott Streets (4 Scott Street).
The train began the final leg of its journey to Hamburg using Buffalo Southern Railroad trackage. As the train arrived it was greeted by the Erie County Fair Marching Band, Fair Bear, and Erie County Fair officials. In 2018 the Fair is celebrated its 150th year being held in Hamburg.

The celebration around the arrival of the Fair Train is unique to Western New York. It is an Erie County Fair tradition not replicated anywhere in North America.
Paul Schober, Longtime Director of Entertainment, Erie County Fair, Hamburg, NY
Paul J. Schober, 55, of Dunkirk, New York, died on November 5, 2019, at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York, after a gallant multiple-year battle with cancer. Paul was born on April 28, 1964, the fifth of six sons of the late William J. Schober and Mary Irene (Van Den Vouver) Schober. After the premature deaths of his parents, Paul was raised by his Aunts, Mary J., Teresa, and Frances Schober, who have also predeceased him, along with the assistance of his brothers.
Paul attended Cardinal Mindszenty High School until its closing, and thereafter attended and graduated with honors from Dunkirk High School in 1982, where he was elected Student Council President. In 1986, he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics, with a minor in Political Science, from Colgate University, where he was a member of the College Council and Phi Delta Theta.
Paul’s fascinating career was spent as an entertainment and concert promoter, and as a talent buyer for various venues, including Melody Fair Theatre in North Tonawanda, and the world-renowned Chautauqua Institution, in Chautauqua, NY. At the time of his death, and his most rewarding role, Paul was the longtime Director of Entertainment at the Erie County Fair and Exposition, and Fairgrounds Gaming and Entertainment, positions he loved because of the terrific group of people he had the pleasure to work with.
In his thirty-year career in entertainment and talent buying, Paul had the opportunity to meet, book, and work with a huge variety of performers and entertainers, across numerous genres. A small list would include Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, ZZ Top, Charlie Daniels, Kelly Clarkson, Black Sabbath, Willie Nelson, and Evel Knievel, let alone all the other events that Paul promoted, including tractor pulls, freestyle motocross, car and bus demolition derbies, jugglers, clowns, magicians, and racing pigs.
Paul was a member of the International Association of Fairs & Expositions (IAFE); the International Entertainment Buyers Association (IEBA); and a United States Representative for an Entertainment and Performing Arts Tour of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Although his professional work was very important to Paul, and he excelled at it, it was his roles as son, brother, nephew, uncle, great-uncle and friend that he will forever be remembered. Paul was an impresario when it came to connecting with his family, and his friends, and was more than willing to assume the role of “Master of Ceremonies” at any gathering.
Paul and his incredible grace, wit, generosity, charm and love will be dearly missed by his brothers, William F. (aka Fritz) Schober, John J. (Susan) Schober, Joseph E. (Alma) Schober, Edmund M. (Mary Beth) Schober, and Michael W. (Shelly Feser) Schober; his adoring nieces and nephews, Liam, Simon, Kristen, Andrew, Zachary, Teresa (Tess), Matthew, Michael, Mario, Max, Fritz, and Hans; his treasured great-nieces Mary Irene and Grace Elizabeth Siracuse; his Aunts and Uncle Ginny and Edmund Van Den Vouver, and Ruth Fitzgerald; his loving cousins, and his many amazing friends from coast to coast, with manyof them being friends since his days at School 4, and St. Mary’s in Dunkirk, NY. He was also predeceased by his Uncle, John G. (Yogi) Fitzgerald, and his cousin, Lynn (Fitzgerald) Riley.
Erie County Fair Welcomes 1st Day of Summer 2018 with Fireworks
It was a wet, early spring and an even longer winter. The Erie County Fair, known to many as the “Best 12 Days of Summer” officially usher in “Summer 2018” with a brief, ground level pyrotechnic display at 6:07am….the exact time of summer’s arrival (summer solstice).
In addition to celebrating the 1st day of summer, the pyrotechnic display also promoted the return of a longtime Fair tradition… daily fireworks. Each night of the Fair (August 8-19), a fireworks display produced by Skylighters of Western New York will begin at 9:30pm.
“Generations of Fairgoers remember winding down their Fair day by watching fireworks,” said CEO & Fair Manager Jessica Underberg. “We are proud to bring back this tradition as we celebrate our sesquicentennial year in Hamburg.”
Daily pyrotechnics is part of the Fair’s celebration commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Erie County Fair being held at the Fairgrounds in Hamburg. In 1868, by a one vote margin, the Erie County Agricultural Society’s Board of Directors voted to move the Fair from the Village of Springville to property owned by Luther Titus and the Hamburg Driving Park Association. The property, that included a half-mile racetrack, was offered free of charge for holding the annual Fair. The decision to relocate only 12 miles from the City of Buffalo kicked off a period of unprecedented growth for the Fair, eventually resulting in the Erie County Fair becoming one of the largest fairs in North America. In 2017, The Erie County Fair ranked as the 12th largest fair when compared to all state and county fairs in the United States and Canada.
