A Visit To Asheville NC, (and some beer) | MOTM VLOG #47
This city had a shroud of mystery around it for us. Everyone we met had the same reaction to the mention of Asheville: “*GASP!* You HAVE to go to Asheville! You’ll love it!” We were told it was artsy, it was modern, it was laid-back, it was a college town, it was beautiful, it had the Biltmore Estate, it had tons of good shops and restaurants, it was a hippie town, it was progressive, and it was Beer City, USA.
We grabbed our bikes and found a parking spot about a mile outside of downtown. We rode in a ways before finding a place to lock up our bikes. We walked the streets, just noticing the people about, the colorful, earthy, high-end shops, the plethora of restaurant options. The art on the walls, an old bus turned into a hip little corner coffee shop. Like any city it had homeless people. It also had street musicians staked out in front of the cafes with the outdoor seating areas.
We walked the Pack Square Park with the county courthouse and City Hall, which is one of the Art Deco Masterpieces of Asheville. In 1943, World War II pilot Col. Robert Morgan was flying his Memphis Belle bomber on a nationwide tour to sell war bonds. On his way out of Asheville, he banked the craft 60 degrees and slipped it between the Courthhouse and the City Hall.
The next day we went to check out The Biltmore Estate. The Biltmore Estate is America's largest home, built by George Vanderbilt. It is an 8000-acre beautiful and grand estate in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, NC that many claim outshine many of the castles in Europe.
We had been told it was very beautiful. The drive into the estate entrance gate was gorgeous. Tickets were required to get close enough to SEE the house. We went into the Visitor/Ticket Center to see our options. When we learned it was going to be $65 per person to gain entry, we watched the free short info video of the history of the estate, and then we left. Maybe we will come back one day when we are a little less frugal.
We debated driving all the way out to the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. After the failed attempt to see the Biltmore Estate, we figured we should at least see something. We had been told by our friends RV Love that we should go and that it was BEAUTIFUL. We couldn’t help but wonder how a brewery could be beautiful….
Yes, you should go to Asheville. It is quite an experience. Like any city, it has tons to do, lots of great restaurants, and some interesting history. Some things will cost you a lot, but if you're vacationing on a budget there are definitely some cool places where you get a lot of bang for your buck. This one definitely had a unique vibe though - a little more laid back, a little more indie and artsy.

State trooper caught on camera flying past motorcyclists
CHARLOTTE, NC -A North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper was caught on camera flying by a group of motorcyclists on New Year's Day.
In the video it's clear the motorcyclists driving on a Charlotte highway are already going fast and the trooper zooms right past them using the shoulder of the road.
The trooper doesn't use his siren, and there don't appear to be any emergency lights.
Seba Medford, the man who recorded the video, said this happened on I-485 about 15 miles from I-77 in north Charlotte.
The road was rain soaked and Medford wants to know why the trooper was driving so fast.
I don't expect anyone to shoot past me that fast especially in the emergency lane. It takes one second for somebody to switch lanes and it could have been a lot different, said Medford.
Medford said his group was going maybe 75 miles per hour.
He thinks the trooper had to be going at least 100 miles per hour. He said he didn't want to get anyone in trouble in posting the video, and just wants all drivers to be safe on the road.
Officials with the Highway Patrol confirmed that they had been issued the video and said that it is under review to determine if any policies were violated.
They said appropriate action would be taken after review of the video.

police brutality action, Greece solidarity ride Asheville, North Carolina
On December 6th, 2008 15 year old Alexis Grigoropooulos was shot dead by police in Exarchia, Greece. This incident sparked an immediate and widespread response in the form of angry demonstrations and riots in many Greek cities. Frustrated with police brutality, as well as the economic policy of Greece, which like the USA has bailed out their banking industry while 1 in 5 Greek citizens live in poverty, large scale protests and riots ensued.
On December 19th, Asheville citizens biked in solidarity with Greece. This is some footage.
25 days after Alexis' death, on 2008/2009 New Years Night, approximately 6700 miles away in Oakland California, 22 year old Oscar Grant was shot to death by BART police officers while he was laying on his stomach being compliant in his detainment.
The police, as well as the courts, the military, prisons and any other repressive body of the armed state, actually exist for the exact opposite of public safety. They exist to ensure the safety of the capitalist system, which requires that exploitation be safeguarded. These institutions of repression exist in class society for the purpose of maintaining the power and privileges of the ruling class in their insatiable drive for limitless profits.
The biggest criminals in society—the ones who suck the wealth out of our neighborhoods, who send our family and friends to die in their criminal wars, who pollute the world, who justify greed over human need—they are never jailed. Cops do not arrest them or kill them. They protect them. That is their job, they are all mercenary agents of state terrorism.

BUMPS, JUMPS, & GETTING LOST! - San Lee Bike Park (1ST HALF) on a HARDTAIL - Sanford, NC
San Lee Bike Park is about 2 hours west of my town, Wilmington, NC. Right outside of the Raleigh area, this trail system is built on a public park around a gorgeous reservoir. The park offers roughly 11 miles of trails, with all options. The main trail is beginner to intermediate, however the short loop feature options are rugged and most definitely black diamond, with a few double black diamond jumps and features.
Due to time (and light) restraints, I was only able to preview the first half of this trail system. In the first half however, there were plenty of fun jumps, rocks, drops, rollers, and big berms to be had. Full suspension is most definitely NOT a requirement, however you WILL have a lot more fun with some squish!
I plan on getting back here as soon as possible to taste some of what I missed in the second half!
Thanks for watching and supporting!

Flag Controversy
A local veteran is still fighting for his country. Vietnam Vet Al Borchardt has moved from the battlefield to his front yard over a dispute about how he flies his American flag. He says he's in the middle of a war with his homeowners' association and he may have to surrender. The 75-year-old lives in the gated Ridgeview community. Borchardt started flying an American flag atop a standard 20 ft. pole on national holidays. He even lighted the flag at night. But he was notified by the Homeowners Association he's breaking the rules. The rule states that only small flags attached to the house are allowed. Borchardt faces fines of up to 00 a day. Borchardt says they will contact local legislators to try to get some help. He tell News 13 that it's possible he might move away to a place can fly his American flag. MST Day 8 - Shining Rock and night hiking - North Carolina Mountains to Sea Trail
Areas covered: Middle Prong Wilderness, Shining Rock and Graveyard Fields
Specifically... Rough Butt Bald to near US-276
Section comments:
After weathering hurricane Florence, I was dropped off on the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) near US-74/Waynesville. I'll be honest - I was a bit worried about how much road noise I would encounter given how close the trail followed the BRP. And it started out sounding a bit like Charlotte Motor Speedway as the motorcycles roared on the parkway. Eventually, the trail got a bit further from the road, and the Sunday traffic started to die down, so I noticed the noise less and less. Day 6 started with a nice smooth trail gaining elevation at a nice pace. Then it got a bit more serious and I was huffing & puffing. I eventually made camp just before DoubleTop Mtn overlook. One nice thing about following the BRP is the trail pops out near the overlooks, so you get to enjoy them as well. Day 7 the trail was a bit more primitive and rugged but also more remote - it had far less traffic noise as it gained some distance away from the BRP. The campsite near Rough Butt Bald was one of the larger ones out there. Day 6 & 7 I only saw 2 other groups on the trail. Day 8 I crossed Middle Prong Wilderness, Flat Laurel Creek & into Shining Rock / Graveyard Fields. Beautiful areas if you've never been here. I was tempted to hit the Devils Courthouse overlook but bypassed it once I saw it was in the clouds.
This portion of the trail requires a bear canister to camp overnight, which I did not have. My plan was to see if anybody was camping near Black Balsam road & store my food in their car; or camp before or after the section requiring a canister; or somehow get a ride around this section. I reached Black Balsam road around 5 pm and nobody was camping along the road - first time I've seen that. I ate my dinner (hoping somebody would setup camp) and pondered my next option - either night hike thru Graveyard Fields; backtrack to the Art Loeb (and legal camping) or something else. I finally decided to night hike even though I already had in 11 miles. Well that turned into its own adventure. After darkness set in around 8 pm & I'm somewhere in Graveyard Fields, I hear shouting on the trail in front of me. Perplexed (since nobody should be camping here), I yelled back, thinking maybe I was freaking them out night hiking. Turns out I ran into 3 lost hikers who had called 911, which subsequently was activating search & rescue. I was able to guide them back to their car, and they ended up giving me a ride until I was in an area I could camp.
Day 9 & 10 were a little less eventful - I hit Pisgah Inn for lunch & to use their restrooms (later found out showers were available at the campground). I then ran into a fellow MST hiker & shared a camp with her & her dog - the only time the entire trip somebody else was at camp with me.
One final note - I had intended to continue on thru Asheville and stay at a motel or possibly hostel. However, when my looked at hotel pricing - it was a prime leaf-peeping weekend - I decided I would rather not pay $140 for Motel 6, so I caught a ride back to Charlotte. This also allowed me to see my daughter for her birthday.
