Fort Conde in Mobile, Alabama
Fort Conde in Mobile Alabama
The current Fort Condé, located in Mobile, Alabama is about 1/3 of the original fort recreated in 4/5-scale, opened on July 4, 1976 as part of Mobile's United States bicentennial celebration.
Originally founded in 1702 at 27-Mile Bluff up river, Mobile was relocated in 1711 to the current site where a temporary wooden stockade fort was constructed to protect the town. It was named Fort Louis after the old fort up river. In 1723, construction of a new brick fort with a stone foundation began. Renamed Fort Condé in honor of King Louis XIV's brother.

Fort Condé - Mobile, Alabama
This is the replica of Fort Condé built on the actual sight of the original fort in Mobile, Alabama. It was built in 1723 in honor of Louis Henri de Bourbon, duc de Bourbon and prince de Condé. The British took over as result of the Seven Years' War in 1763 and it was renamed Fort Charlotte in honor of the wife of King George III. The Spanish occupied the fort in 1780 and was renamed Fort Carlota. In 1813, the United States took over and Fort Charlotte became the name once again for the fortifications. The fort guarded Mobile from 1723-1820. The fort was torn down by the city as it was no longer needed for defense. The demise of the fort allowed new streets to be built.
My ancestors - the Goudeaus and Laurendines - lived there during the French regime.
The replica was built in 1976 to celebrate America's 200th birthday.

SUMMARY
=======
Mobile was founded as the capital of colonial French Louisiana in 1702 and remained a part of New France for over 60 years. During 1720, when France warred with Spain, Mobile was on the battlefront, so the capital moved west to Biloxi. In 1763, Britain took control of the colony following their victory in the Seven Years War. Following the American Revolutionary War, Mobile did not become a part of the United States, as it was part of territory captured by Spain from Great Britain in 1780.
Mobile first became a part of the United States in 1813, when it was captured by American forces and added to the Mississippi Territory, then later re-zoned into the Alabama Territory in August 1817. Finally on December 14, 1819, Mobile became part of the new 22nd state, Alabama, one of the earlier states of the U.S. Forty-one years later, Alabama left the Union and joined the Confederate States of America in 1861. It returned in 1865 after the American Civil War.
Mobile had spent decades as French, then British, then Spanish, then American, spanning 160 years, up to the Civil War.

The Port of Mobile has always played a key role in the economic health of the city, beginning with the settlement as an important trading center between the French colonists and Native Americans, down to its current role as the 12th-largest port in the United States.

Mobile was founded in 1702 by the French as the first capital of Louisiana. During its first 100 years, Mobile was a colony of France, then Britain, and lastly Spain. Mobile became a part of the United States in 1813, with the annexation by President James Madison of West Florida from Spain. The city surrendered to Federal forces on April 12, 1865, after Union victories at two forts protecting the city. This, along with the news of Johnston's surrender negotiations with Sherman, led Taylor to seek a meeting with his Union counterpart, Maj. Gen. Edward R. S. Canby. The two generals met several miles north of Mobile on May 2. After agreeing to a 48-hour truce, the generals enjoyed an al fresco luncheon of food, drink, and lively music. Canby offered Taylor the same terms agreed upon between Lee and Grant. Taylor accepted the terms and surrendered his command on May 4 at Citronelle, Alabama.
Considered one of the Gulf Coast's cultural centers, Mobile has several art museums, a symphony orchestra, professional opera, professional ballet company, and a large concentration of historic architecture. Mobile is known for having the oldest organized Carnival or Mardi Gras celebrations in the United States. Its French Catholic colonial settlers celebrated this festival from the first decade of the 18th century. Beginning in 1830, Mobile was host to the first formally organized Carnival mystic society to celebrate with a parade in the United States. (In New Orleans such a group is called a krewe.)

C-SPAN Cities Tour - Mobile: Greg Waselkov, A Conquering Spirit
Author, Gregory Waselkov tells the story of the Fort Mims Massacre and how the battle marked the transition from a civil war within the Creek Tribe (Muskogee) to a war between the United States and the Red Stick warriors of the Upper Creek. The Fort Mims battle occurred on August 30, 1813 during the Creek War (1813-1814), when a force of Creek Indians, belonging to the Red Sticks stormed the fort and defeated the militia garrison. After the defeat of the garrison, there ensued a massacre and almost all of the remaining Lower Creek, white settlers, and militia at Fort Mims were killed. The Red Sticks' victory at Fort Mims spread panic throughout the Southeastern United States frontier, and settlers demanded governmental action and fled to surrounding areas, including Mobile, Alabama. The Red Stick victory was one of the greatest achieved by Native Americans. Fort Mims is now a State Historic site located about 35 miles north of present-day Mobile, Alabama.
