Meet Vicky - Local Fish Merchant
As islanders, the natural ebb and flow of the tide can often shape the lives of those who spend their days at the water’s edge. It’s something that rings true for Vicky Boarder who along with her brother runs a fresh fish stall that’s been part of island life for more than 25 years, connecting customers with locally caught fish and seafood straight from the boats.

Jersey fish fresh to Philly's Chestnut Hill Farmers Market
A New Jersey van packed with fresh Atlantic seafood did a brisk business its first time out at the Chestnut Hill Farmers Market last Saturday. They plan to come every other week, alternating with the market they do in Bryn Mawr. Justin Hetrick introduced eager new customers and your correspondent to the fresh fish operation. We are called Local130 seafood [A large patrioitc painting on the side of the van shouts it out] We are out of Asbury Park, New Jersey. The 130 stands for the amount of New Jersey coast line. All the fish that you see here today, with the exception of halibut which comes from New England, is coming right off the coast daily. Sea scallops out of Point Pleasant. You know Barnegat Light, Long Beach Island? We are Asbury Park, only 20 minutes from Point Pleasant and we can go the day they come in off the boat and get everything fresh that day. There’s a fleet of commercial boats that run out of there. Arguably, I think it’s the third largest port in New Jersey next to Barnegat light and Cape May. They go out in all kinds of weather to catch us the fish that we need. We are pretty lucky and blessed to have that. Nothing here is ever frozen. Nothing that we sell in the shop is frozen. We pack it fresh and we put it on ice so it keeps the temperature nice and cold without ever actually freezing it. So it’s still soft to the touch. Here are some of the information cards that I didn’t put out yet - we have skate wings, the black seabass, sea scallops, weakfish, fluke, A lot of people know it as flounder but we like to call it fluke. The only thing I don’t have a card for today is cod.
JERSEY: AIR B'N'FEAST EP:8 - Cooking seafood in the Channel Islands!
Jersey is amazing! In the eighth episode of Air B'n'Feast, I take a short trip to the channel islands to get some decent seafood and check out the food scene there!
My previous knowledge of this beautiful little island is that it has French influence, breeds amazing cows for equally stunning dairy, and has Jersey Royal potatoes and excellent seafood. (and it's German Occupation from 1940-1945, its legacy dotted about the island) That was all I needed to know.
It certainly lived up to expectations, flying away from the chill of London to the delightful heat of an sun-drenched island only a 45 minute flight away!
Visiting the markets, I could quickly see that cooking would be easy - local producers seem proud of their products, and the taste really reflects that!!
Some of the places I visited:
At the markets:
Dunn Ross Fisheries
Faulkner Fisheries
Jersey Market
Bouley Bay
St Helier
Devil's Hole
La Corbière
Beauport Beach
St Brelade's Bay
Horse Box Cafe -
Sorel Point
Bonne Nuit Pier
And a whole lot more! It's super easy to get around, car hire was really easy from a local Avis franchise. I think Jersey still needs more exploring, more rest and relaxation on my part, and is a great stepping stone to make it over to Guernsey too!
Either way, get yourself to Jersey in the summer. You won't regret it.

Meet Paul - Local Restaurateur
Seafood tastes better when you can see the sea. It’s something Paul Dufty, owner of Sumas restaurant in Gorey with its sea views knows only too well. In Jersey it’s all about provenance, and with produce grown in the island, and fresh fish and seafood caught on the tide, you can count our food miles on one hand. Here’s why Paul Dufty feels the island is a special destination for food, and why he’s chosen to make it his home.

1977 Jersey and Guernsey
Footage taken by Reginald Percival (Tim) Brond (1906-1978) on his trip back to the UK with Jennie and Trevor Wall, and to Guernsey with his Aunt Marie Louise Francois.
This sequence documents some of the highlights of Jersey and Guernsey in the Channels Islands:
- Flying to Guernsey via Jersey
- 'Les Rocques Barrees', Bordeaux, Guernsey, the grand family home of Tim's Grannie, Mary Frances Louisa Isemonger, who raised Tim in Balham, London, after his mother's death
- St Peter Port, Guernsey
- St Peter Port Guernsey Market, Guernsey
- Noonday Gun ceremony, Castle Cornet, St Peter Port, Guernsey
- Little Chapel, Blanchelande Girls College, Les Vauxbelets, St. Andrew's, Guernsey. A very small chapel decorated with broken china, seashells and pebbles.
- Batterie Dollmann, Pleinmont, Guernsey. WWII German Range Finding and Observation Tower MP4, M132 German Fire Control Post
- St Peter Port Harbour, Guernsey
- Moulin Huet Bay, Guernsey. A favourite subject of French Impressionist painter, Auguste Renoir.
- Sylvia and Harry Brass (cousin) and daughter, Luz Marie
- Departing, Guernsey Airport
Tim's mother, Emma Mary Brond (nee Francois) and family came from Guernsey. Tim had spent quite a lot of time at his Great Aunt Adele Isemonger's property 'Oakenholt', St Peter Port, Guernsey after his mother's death. This property was cleared and a Shopping Mall stands on the site.

SUMMARY
=======
Jersey (, French: [ʒɛʁzɛ]; Jèrriais: Jèrri IPA: [dʒɛri]), officially the Bailiwick of Jersey (French: Bailliage de Jersey; Jèrriais: Bailliage dé Jèrri), is a Crown dependency located near the coast of Normandy, France. Jersey was part of the Duchy of Normandy, whose dukes went on to become kings of England from 1066. After Normandy was lost by the kings of England in the 13th century, and the ducal title surrendered to France, Jersey and the other Channel Islands remained attached to the English crown.
The bailiwick consists of the island of Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands, along with surrounding uninhabited islands and rocks collectively named Les Dirouilles, Les Écréhous, Les Minquiers, Les Pierres de Lecq, and other reefs. Although the bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey are often referred to collectively as the Channel Islands, the Channel Islands are not a constitutional or political unit. Jersey has a separate relationship to the Crown from the other Crown dependencies of Guernsey and the Isle of Man, although all are held by the monarch of the United Kingdom.Jersey is a self-governing parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy, with its own financial, legal and judicial systems, and the power of self-determination. The Lieutenant Governor on the island is the personal representative of the Queen. It is the second closest of the Channel Islands to France, after Alderney.
Jersey is not part of the United Kingdom, and has an international identity separate from that of the UK, but the UK is constitutionally responsible for the defence of Jersey. The definition of United Kingdom in the British Nationality Act 1981 is interpreted as including the UK and the Islands together. The European Commission have confirmed in a written reply to the European Parliament in 2003 that Jersey is within the Union as a European Territory for whose external relationships the UK is responsible. Jersey is not fully part of the European Union but has a special relationship with it, notably being treated as within the European Community for the purposes of free trade in goods.British cultural influence on the island is evident in its use of English as the main language and the British pound as its primary currency, even if some people still speak the Norman language. Additional cultural commonalities include driving on the left, access to the BBC and ITV regions, a school curriculum following that of England, and the popularity of British sports, including football, cricket, and rugby.
