Gibraltar Museum renovations completed
Renovations at the Gibraltar Museum are complete, with the official opening of the new wing taking place on Saturday. Life-size reconstructions of two Neanderthal’s are particularly impressive additions.
The open day will take place this Saturday, starting at 10 am. It’s free entrance for all, with activities including a fancy dress competition and a fire display.

Part of #NEANDERTHAL: The Conference which was organised by the Gibraltar National Museum from 13th to 15th September 2018 at the University of Gibraltar.
The Gibraltar Skull, also known as the Forbes’ Quarry skull or Gibraltar 1, is Gibraltar’s most celebrated fossil. It was presented to the Gibraltar Scientific Society (at the time known as the Museum Society) in 1848 by its twenty-three-year-old Secretary Lieutenant Edmund Réné Flint. Almost nothing is known about its discovery. This is in sharp contrast to the discovery of other Neanderthal finds such as the Engis, Neander Valley, and Le Moustier fossils.
The Gibraltar Skull was sent to England in 1864 where the anatomist and anthropologist George Busk declared that it “resembles, in all essential particulars . . . the far-famed Neanderthal skull; but in many respects, it is of infinitely higher value than that much-disputed relic”. And Charles Darwin, one of the first to see the skull after it arrived in England, described it as “wonderful”. How much do we know about the early history of the skull? The majority of accounts have the Gibraltar Scientific Society stashing the fossil in a drawer or on a shelf gathering dust for years, its true importance having been missed. If only, the accounts go, it had been sent to England earlier, we would today be discussing Gibraltar Man, and not Neanderthal Man. In my presentation I will show that this historiography is not quite correct.

Gibraltar museum wins festival award
The Gibraltar Museum has won the Festival Award at the Twickenham Alive Film Festival with a short film showcasing the Gorham’s Cave Complex UNESCO World Heritage Site. As well as this, the Museum has also recently announced plans to create a co-operative network of collaboration with the Fundacion Atapuerca, with the idea of sharing experiences and expertise alongside the research site in Spain.

Our Gibraltar Museum lecture series begins tomorrow
The annual Museum lecture series “Our Gibraltar” begins tomorrow evening with a talk by the President of the Scientific Society, Doctor Alex Menez.
Tomorrow evening’s lecture, “to promote the objects of general science: the story of the Gibraltar Scientific Society,” will take place at seven, at the John Mackintosh Hall.
Christine Vasquez spoke to the Director of the Gibraltar Museum, Professor Clive Finlayson. She put to him that this year they were lucky to count with, not only, the Gibraltar Scientific Society but also the Gorhams Cave Unesco World Heritage Site.

The Gibraltar Museum has welcomed a new exhibit of Great Auks. A flightless bird that became extinct in the mid-19th century has been found to have lived here on the Rock, with bones discovered in the Gorham’s Cave complex.

General Manager, Marc Skvorc experiences UNESCO World Heritage Site Gorham's Cave
Welcome to Adventures with Marc. It is with great pleasure that we introduce this section of our blog with none other than Sunborn Gibraltar's very own General Manager, Marc Skvorc.
After having arrived to Gibraltar a little over a year ago, Marc has explored the Rock visiting many sites and experienced many of Gibraltar's beautiful features. However, one landmark which always wanted to experience were the recently awarded Gorham's Cave which recently became part of the UNESCO family after the complex was awarded World Heritage Site status in July 2016.
