Jonathan Coulton on song Ikea - Gladstone Theatre, Ottawa, Canada
A clip from JoCo's performance at the Gladstone Theatre on May 28, 2010. Here he's commenting on the song Ikea.
(I'd post the song, but people have already posted versions from the concert that are better than mine. My battery was dying (!) so I didn't film any full-length songs).
And to any random people who may be viewing this, sorry for the crummy quality of the footage. I'm uploading primarily to show friends.

ABOUT THE SHOW
Join immensely talented cast members Michelle Gendron (Cathy) and Louie Rossetti (Jamie) as they take you through an emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two New Yorkers in their twenties who fall in and out of love over the course of five years.
The show’s unconventional structure consists of Cathy, telling her story backwards while Jamie, tells his story chronologically; the two characters only meet once, at their wedding in the middle of the show.

Retro Furniture is a term that refers to original furniture from the mid-20th century era and also encompasses modern pieces, which evoke the look and style from the 1950's to the 1970's.
The 1950's was the decade that started to take the modern furniture seriously. The B-52 hairdo was in style, the cold war was in full bloom and everyone owned a picket fence. Contemporary was the word of the day and bold patterns were in.
Whether it was wallpapers, fabrics or window dressings consumers went for elegant, modern furniture that was suspended magically above the floor, supported on shapely legs. Following closely, the 1960's introduced a broad range of styles, including country cottage pine, bean bag chairs and inflatable furniture. The classic retro look is long and low, with teak sideboards and coffee tables. It was the sexual revolution, man on the moon and the end of segregation.
In the late 1950's and early 1960's Scandinavian design was influencing design in the United Sates and United Kingdom. Highly skilled craftsmanship combined with modern design captured the mood of the time. Many UK manufacturers used teak and rosewood furniture from Scandinavia. Through the 1970's the love of teak continued until pine broke onto the market. Suddenly design began to become heavier and more substantial in volume.
For some time we been rediscovering the true value of this design. Retro and Vintage Furniture in Ottawa is available on ebay or kijiji, but not all pieces were created equal and perfecting your eye may take some time and a bit of trial and error. There are great new designs in the world that were based on past designs, but having a piece of history is a guarantee that your style is authentic. The most stylish homes mix modern design and retro style. It's never too late to develop your own retro look.

Little Italy - Ottawa Real Estate - Ottawa Living
Ciao, my Ottawa friends, and welcome to Little Italy, one of Ottawa’s most spirited communities. Located between Chinatown and Wellington West, and stretching as far South as Carling ave., this is the cultural centre of Ottawa's Italian community.
Preston Street or ‘Corso Italia’, at the heart of Little Italy, is the main commercial district, and is home to most of the small businesses and Italian restaurants in the neighbourhood. The majority of the businesses here are family operated with “an owner in the store” approach to customer service.
Preston and its side streets host a variety of events and festivals, like the annual Italian Week festival, Ottawa’s largest street party; La Vendemmia, a wine festival where businesses set up on the sidewalk; and Pomodoro, a massive tomato fight to raise funds for local charity.
This area is a dream location for vehicle enthusiasts, as the community hosts several automobile events such as the Ferrari festival with an Italian Car Parade, and the Show N’ Shine, which features members of Ottawa’s vintage car clubs who polish up their rides and show them off on Preston Street for all to admire.
With beautiful heritage buildings like The St. Anthony of Padua Church, and incredible architectural art like the Millennial Arch (and the Heritage Mural Project, the Bambini) celebrating the community, this European-style neighbourhood is packed full of culture.
Little Italy is also home to comedy clubs and The Gladstone theatre for thought-provoking entertainment, plus there is an intersection along Somerset Street, bringing together the neighbourhoods of Chinatown and Little Italy, which creates an interesting and diverse collection of restaurants, pubs, and homes.
There’s always something happening here in Little Italy, so come and check out why this vibrant community is where you want to be.

REVIEW: Translations @ Ottawa Little Theatre

And for those of you who occasionally like to take things by reading the words, here's the review script:
Brian Friel's play, Translations, is the story of a small Irish Parish in the 19th century which is on the brink of a cultural invasion and assimilation on two fronts. One with the upcoming opening of a national school that will offer free education to everybody, but only in the King's English. Two, the arrival of British redcoats whose job is to map the countryside and effectively anglicise the place names. The script is both funny and tragic and the world premiere of Translations starred the amazing Liam Nissan, Stephen Rea and Mick Lally.
I enjoyed Ottawa Little Theatre's presentation of Translations for the most part. I've read the script and think it's hilarious. The problem was the direction. There's a three-act, four-scene breakdown to the play, and the pacing in the first act was way off. There's a lot going on here between setting up the world and the coming storm and introducing ten characters each with their individual quirks -- and it all came across rather rushed. There's little time spared for the jokes to come across or the information being given to audiences to settle.
Fortunately, several of the actors, namely Jack Allan Meltzer, Dan Baran, and Lawrence Aronovitch, do excellent work and manage to carry the play forward. It's through Aronovitch's Owen specifically that the conflict of Translations is really felt. Owen is translator and facilitator for the British soldiers as well as himself a resident of the Irish town, meaning his loyalties are being constantly put to the test.
Going into the second act, the pacing corrects itself and has very strong moments on all fronts and from all actors, but when we reach the third act and final scene, the pacing issue comes back in reverse with this one being too slow and leaving the big heartfelt climax not achieving the resonance it needs to.
The crowd on the night we were there was small, and fairly non-responsive. I even noticed that several people left at intermission. This might be in part due to the pacing problems I just mentioned but it may just as well be a commentary on the audience. My thinking is that, rooted in Irish culture and British imperialism, Translations is a play that just might not do much for a modern Canadian audience.
