Or how about off the beaten path at the Great Wall Fresh Homestay? - This film aims to determine once and for all, which is the best section of the Great Wall to visit.
I'm trying something a little different with this film - it's longer and more documentary style. Let me know what you think in the comments!

Mutianyu Cablecar at the Great Wall of China / 慕田峪 (长城 / 長城)
The Mutianyu Great Wall of China cable car or cable way is of 723 meters, its height above sea level at terminal is 640 meters and cable car can run 3.5 meters per hour. The cable way is able to carry 58 compartments at most with six persons in each compartment, so during each one way, the cable way can deliver 1,800 persons per hour.
Mutianyu / 慕田峪 is a section of the Great Wall of China / 长城 / 長城 located in Huairou County 70 km northeast of central Beijing. The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is connected with Jiankou in the west and Lianhuachi in the east. As one of the best-preserved parts of the Great Wall, the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall used to serve as the northern barrier defending the capital and the imperial tombs.
First built in the mid-6th century during the Northern Qi, Mutianyu Great Wall is older than the Badaling section of the Great Wall. In the Ming dynasty, under the supervision of General Xu Da, construction of the present wall began on the foundation of the wall of Northern Qi. In 1404, a pass was built in the wall. In 1569, the Mutianyu Great Wall was rebuilt and till today most parts of it are well preserved. The Mutianyu Great Wall has the largest construction scale and best quality among all sections of Great Wall.
Built mainly with granite, the wall is 7–8.5 metres high and the top is 4–5 metres wide. Compared with other sections of Great Wall, Mutianyu Great Wall possesses unique characteristics in its construction.
- Watchtowers are densely placed along this section of the Great Wall - 22 watchtowers on this 2,250-metre-long stretch.
- Both the outer and inner parapets are crenelated with merlons, so that shots could be fired at the enemy on both sides - a feature very rare on other parts of the Great Wall.
- The Mutianyu Pass consists of 3 watchtowers, one big in the centre and two smaller on both sides. Standing on the same terrace, the three watchtowers are connected to each other inside and compose a rarely seen structure among all sections of Great Wall.
Besides, this section of Great Wall is surrounded by woodland and streams. The forest-coverage rate is over 90 percent.
Today, this section of wall is open to visitors. There are three methods of ascent and four methods of descent to choose from. Besides utilizing 4000+ steps, visitors may also choose between a two-rider chairlift or four-rider gondola lift up from the foothills to the level of the wall, which runs along the ridges above. These lifts may also be used to descend. Another feature of the wall at Mutianyu is an alternate method of descent by single-rider personal wheeled toboggan. This allows single riders to descend from the wall to the valley on a winding metal track.
Adjacent to the Mutianyu wall is its namesake village, which has been hailed by the Chinese government as a model village because of its rebirth largely thanks to tourism and glassware industries. Mutianyu Village is twinned with the village of Shelburne Falls in the U.S. state of Massachusetts.
Due to its proximity to the Jiankou Great Wall, the Mutianyu-Jiankou trail is becoming one of the most popular Great Wall hikes. As Jiankou is in a state of disrepair, this hike combines the preserved condition of Jiankou's Great Wall with the classic restorative brickwork of Mutianyu.

Camping on the Great Wall of China
Kuinka telttailla Kiinan muurilla?
TÄSSÄ OHJEET:
1. Gubeikou (古北口 Gǔběikǒu) on Beijingistä n. 130 kilometriä pohjoiseen ja n. 3-4 tunnin matkan päässä kaupungin keskustasta. Kiinan muurin nimi on ”Panlongshan” eli ”Coiling Dragon Mountain” (蟠龙山). Osoite: Southeast of Gubeikou Town, Miyun County, Beijing
2. Valitse Pekingissä metrolinja 2 tai 13 (ennen klo 8 aamuruuhkaa) ja saavu Dongzhimen pitkän matkan bussiterminaalille.
3. Nappaa expressbussi numero 980 ja matkusta noin 1.5-2 tuntia Miyun kylään pysäkille ”Miyun changtu chezhan” (密云长途车站). Suosittelemme käyttämään busseissa julkisen liikenteen ladattavaa matkakorttia, sillä matka on tällöin puolet halvempi kuin käteisellä matkustettaessa. Bussikortti pitää leimata bussin sisälle saapuessa ja toisen kerran bussista poistuttaessa. Matka Pekingistä Miyuniin maksaa noin 6 yuania (1 euro).
4. Älä huomioi kalliita minibusseja tai taksikuskeja, jotka hyökkäävät haukan lailla kimppuusi bussista ulos astuessasi. Kävele siihen suuntaan, josta bussi saapui, ylitä risteys oikealle päin ja kadun varresta löydät bussipysäkin Gubeikouhun. Hyppää ensimmäistä bussia pienempään bussiin (bussi numero 25), joka ajaa noin tunnin välein Gubeikouhun reilun 50 kilometrin matkan. Matka maksaa kortilla maksettaessa 4 yuania ja kestää 1,5-2 tuntia.
5. Gubeikoussa lähin bussipysäkki muurin sisäänkäynnin luona on pysäkki juuri ennen suurta Gubeikoun tunnelia ”Yong Jun Road” (拥军路). Jos ajat vahingossa tämän pysäkin ohi kuten me teimme, seuraavapysäkki on muutaman sadan metrin päässä kyläkaupan kohdalla.
6. Pääsymaksu muurille on 25 yuania (4 euroa).
7. Muurille pääsee nopeimmin kylän vasemmalta laidalta ylöspäin lähtevää polkua seuraten.
8. Jos haluat kokea muurilla vaeltamisen päinvastaiseen suuntaan (kuten me teimme), kävele pienen sympaattisen kylän läpi tien vierustaa pitkin noin viiden kilometrin matka, jonka jälkeen saavutat muurille johtavat pitkät portaat. Tämä on lähellä Kiemurtelevan lohikäärmevuoren päätyä: oikealla vastaan tulee armeijablokki ja vasemmalla 13 kilometrin matka muuria pitkin takaisin kylään.

wild great wall
Welcome great wall adventures! First-time visitors to China who want to experience the Great Wall have few options. They can reach it via a general great wall guided tour, or they can reach it through specific arranged services. What I offer is vastly different than a common great wall guided tour. Herein is the difference:
Great Wall Usual Guided Tour This is generally the all day great wall guide trip that the typical tourist experiences. You will be transported to a large parking area shared by busses, cars, and hundreds of people. Groomed paths will head up the mountain filled with visitors. Once you reach the wall you will share it with even hundreds of more persons. Children, litter, concession areas, vendors, rest rooms, and whatever else reaches the wall with ease will walk the Great Wall with you. You will be like a sardine in a tin, and that is China tourist typical. If thats what you want, you do not need me.
The Great Wall Alternative This is a wild great wall trip that visitors seldom get to experience. Your own English speaking guide will transport you to a remote farm setting where you will spend the night and dine on freshly prepared food. In the morning you will awake refreshed, have breakfast, and then be guided to a remote section of the wild Great Wall that is not renovated. You will see it all as it was, untouched and left as an archeological site for the favored few. There will be no children, litter, concession areas, vendors, rest rooms, or anything else that walks with you. Where I take you will be China majesty that is untypical. Only through the services of a bi-lingual hiker, organizer and guide could such a trip be accomplished. If thats what you want, then you do need me. Please book a trip or send an E-Mail to inquiry .
