APDI @ The Gun Shop (Leesburg, FL) Januaray 25, 2015
A unique twist on an IDPA match, this match used tribal rules to create a more defensive shooting oriented match. It featured a blind, low-light stage and doubled all points down and penalties.

Buying or owning land or a house in Lake County, FL can be dangerous
Buying or owning land or a house in Lake County, FL can be dangerous - we tell you why - June 16, 2019
This is a 40+ minute overview by Vance Jochim, Lake County, FL's fiscal watchdog blogger about how sneaky land use changes and development proposals near your Lake County, FL rural lot or city residential lot can result in noise, lower property values, etc. I tell you what to do about it and how to prevent the damage caused by unwanted development near you.
Examples are:
- Rural owners of agriculture land with 5+ acre lots and one house all of a sudden have a neighbor build a state-regulated marijuana growing facility with excessively noisy air conditioning units running 24x7 that can be heard a mile away. Or a gun range, mud racing facility, noisy dog kennels etc. are approved by local zoning staff. All of these have happened in Lake County, FL.
- Residents buy homes on the border of a development with undeveloped land as the view over their back fence. Then an unwanted charter school, four story apartments, etc are proposed for that land.
- Residents on 2-5 acre rural lots build their dream home on a country road, then a developer proposes high density homes across the street with many driveways on your undersized access road.
- City staff approve more developments on a County feeder road for your whole community (Dead River Road or Shirley Shores Roads in Tavares, FL) while not doing anything to improve the road or traffic intersections, thus you wait 2-5 signal lights before getting out of your neighborhood. AND, with traffic stacked up, ambulances cannot get out of the area due to the long traffic lines.
- City staff ignore their own comprehensive land use regulations such as required environmental reports, traffic reports, etc until the building starts. Both the city and county ignore rules about how wide the main access road needs to be to handle large trucks, fire vehicles and allow passing.
- You have a lakefront lot on a small lake and enjoy the view. Then one vacant 5-acre lot at the end of the lake (Lake Saunder, near Tavares) is the site for a proposed 4 story, five building rental apartment complex where all the residents will want to use the lake.
- An agricultural area nursery on 20+ acres files a proposal for a 200 person dormitory for seasonal farmworkers over your back fence. You find the rules allowing it are Federal and the local County cannot prevent it. Or, you find the County officials support growth of agriculture that disrupts your plans for a quiet retirement lot.
- A development like the marijuana facility or the farmworker dormitory are regulated by STATE or FEDERAL laws and the County cannot even enforce local noise or lighting ordinances on the owner.
- City staff follow the rules for notifying neighbors about proposed developments using flimsy orange cardboard signs that fall apart after rains, and only send out a mailing to those who own land next door to the proposal, not those within a mile that could be affected by noise, traffic, lower property values, etc. Many people are out of touch, don't read the signs or mailings, and then show up at the final meeting of the County officials and get little support for failing to attend earlier planning and zoning meetings to provide input.
- Most cities except Eustis and Leesburg do NOT video planning and zoning meetings or main Council meetings, thus you cannot watch online or view it later. They also may take 1-2 months to product meeting minutes, thus you have to visit city hall, request and pay for an audio recording of the meeting on a CD and listen to it to find out what happened. My suggestion is don't vote for any official who refuses to fund video meetings of P&Z meetings and City Council meetings. (The County DOES provide live videos of both the P&Z and main Board meetings.)
I attend many County Board meetings as well as Planning & Zoning Board meetings, plus various city councils and their planning and zoning meetings. I videotaped some of them which are on this FiscalRangersFlorida YouTube channel. Background articles are usually on my FiscalRangers.com blog.
I see residents who moved to Lake County from elsewhere for their dream retirement home, either on a large lot like 5 acres or in a residential development who get surprised by development proposals next to or near them.
Watch this video to learn my understanding of the process and how it is risky to buy land or homes in Lake County near undeveloped County or city land. I also explain how to prevent surprises and the one sure fire way to prevent unwanted development next door.

Cash, weapons, Lamborghini seized in major drug bust in Queens, Brooklyn
Four suspects were arrested in Queens and Brooklyn overnight Wednesday in what is being described as a major drug bust.
The bust was the result of a long-running investigation that began with two overdose deaths involving fentanyl-laced heroin -- one in Bay Ridge in 2016 and one in Kew Gardens in May of 2017.
The alleged ringleader was identified as 35-year-old Dionne Sharrow (AKA Slay), who was arrested at his apartment in a luxury high-rise on 51st Avenue in Long Island City. Among the property seized there was a loaded firearm, approximately $500,000 in cash and a Lamborghini parked in the building's garage.
