HOLLAND: The Hague - canal tour 'De Ooievaart' [HD]
Few people know that The Hague also has lovely canals and that a boat tour of these canals, De Ooievaart, is available (since 2003).
The canals of The Hague are almost 400 years old. They were created for the city's defence around 1612.
The regular tour takes you through old and new parts of The Hague, including under bridges and through tunnels. You will see a variety of beautiful buildings and special places, among them the Royal Stables and the Royal Gardens.
The Ooievaart canal tour takes about 1,5 hours.

Scheveningen.. The Hague (Den Haag), The Netherlands (1/10) Seaside Resort Tour
Scheveningen
Scheveningen, [ˈsxeːvənɪŋə(n)] is one of the eight districts of The Hague, as well as a subdistrict (wijk) of that city. Scheveningen is a modern seaside resort with a long, sandy beach, an esplanade, a pier, and a lighthouse. The beach is popular for water sports such as windsurfing and kiteboarding.
The harbour is used for both fishing and tourism.
There are local politicians who are trying to re-brand Scheveningen to The Hague Beach, on account of the name being difficult to pronounce, but this has created a lot of problems with the local population that is very proud of the name Scheveningen. Initiatives have been launched to teach people all over the world how to pronounce the name properly and make videos of saying the name out loud.
It has its own dialect (Schevenings), which is different from The Hague dialect.
History
The earliest reference to the name Sceveninghe goes back to around 1280.
The first inhabitants may have been Anglo-Saxons. Other historians favour a Scandinavian origin. Fishing was the main source of food and income.
The Battle of Scheveningen was fought between English and Dutch fleets off the coast of the village on 10 August 1653. Thousands of people gathered on the shore to watch.
A road to neighbouring The Hague was constructed in 1663 (current name: Scheveningseweg).
In 1470, a heavy storm destroyed the church and half the houses. The village was again hit by storms in 1570, 1775, 1825, 1860, 1881, and 1894. After this last storm, the villagers decided to build a harbour. Until then, the fishing boats had had a flat bottom (bomschuiten), and were pulled up the beach. By around 1870, over 150 of these boats were in use. Once the harbour had been constructed in 1904, more modern ships replaced the bomschuiten.
In 1818, Jacob Pronk constructed a wooden building on a dune near the sea, from where people could bathe from four separate rooms. It marked the start of Scheveningen as a bathing resort. Since then, Scheveningen has attracted numerous tourists from all over Europe, notably from Germany.
The Kurhaus
The hotel and restaurant Kurhaus was opened in 1886.
The picturesque village attracted many Dutch artists over the centuries who painted the bomschuiten drawn up on the beach, or fishermen at work in the North Sea. Notable painters who recorded the village include Adriaen van de Velde, Simon de Vlieger, and Hendrik Willem Mesdag, whose enormous panorama, 14 m high and 120 m wide, preserves the view of Scheveningen in 1881.
The International Skating Union was founded in Scheveningen in 1892.
Anecdotal evidence exists of the name Scheveningen being used as a shibboleth during World War II to identify German spies: they would pronounce the initial Sch differently from Dutch native speakers.
Contrary to popular belief, Scheveningen was never an independent municipality, but it has its own coat of arms, officially recognised by The Hague local council (proposal 136 of 23 March 1984); even in the Middle Ages, it was part of the same administrative region as The Hague; the region had a special status within the county of Holland because of the presence of the Count of Holland.
Nevertheless, Scheveningen always had a strong identity of its own. For instance, it had its own football club, playing in the highest Dutch division (its name was Scheveningen Holland Sport). In the course of the second half of the former century, this club was forced to merge with ADO Den Haag.
Veronica ship MV Norderney, Scheveningen, 7 April 1973
From 21 April 1960, the pirate radio station Radio Veronica broadcast its programmes from an anchorage in the North Sea about four miles off the Scheveningen coast, originally calling itself Vrije Radio Omroep Nederland (VRON); Free Radio Station [of the] Netherlands. It was joined by Radio Noordzee Internationaal in 1970 and the relaunched Radio Caroline in late 1972. When the Netherlands ratified the Treaty of Strasbourg on 1 September 1974, Veronica applied for legal status and became the VOO, Caroline moved anchorage to the English coast, and RNI closed down completely. Memorable episodes during this period included the stranding of Radio Veronica's ship, the Norderney, which lost its anchor in a storm and ran aground on Scheveningen beach on 2 April 1973, and a firebomb attack on RNI's ship, the Mebo II, on 15 May 1971.
Slobodan Milošević, the 3rd president of Serbia and Montenegro was found dead in his prison cell on 11 March 2006 while he was being held in the UN war crimes tribunal's detention center in Scheveningen.

Leiden, Netherlands canal boat tour
Leiden is one of the great cities of the Netherlands. In this segment on Leiden we’re taking you on a canal boat tour. It's a great way to get an overview of the city while sitting and relaxing for an hour and watching the historic buildings glide by. They say Leiden has more canals than any other Dutch city besides Amsterdam. They extend for 28 kilometers within the inner-city and are crossed by 88 bridges, some of which are quite low so you gotta keep your head down when you go beneath them/ It has all of those historic and pictorial charms that you would hope for in a quaint Dutch town -- a city of canals, pedestrian zones, historic buildings and bicycles -- in many ways a typical Dutch town but in others, something quite special. It has the oldest university in the Netherlands with 30,000 students among the 120,000 city population. One of the oldest cities of the country founded about 1000 years ago but with a young population and so many things for the visitor to see and do you could easily spend a couple of days here: drop in on some of its 200 restaurants, 60 bars, thousand shops, many along the pedestrian lanes, explore historic monuments such as this elaborate gatehouse through the medieval wall, one of two surviving gates from the old days, get educated and entertained at one of the half-dozen important museums and stay in one of the 22 hotels offering 3000 rooms.
Leiden is located just 40 minutes away from Amsterdam by train, or 20 minutes away from the airport by direct train -- easy to reach yet like many Dutch cities it's overlooked by most of those millions of visitors to Amsterdam who rarely venture beyond that big city. They're missing out on a lot that the Netherlands has to offer as will be showing you in our series.
The route that we will be taking in our one hour boat tour goes through some of the most beautiful of the canals of the city in a big loop and then coming back to where we started.
I was lucky to take what turned out to be a private tour. Well, nobody else showed up for the departure and Tim very gallantly said okay let's go and took me on a one hour boat ride. He works with a very special boat tour company that relies on 60 volunteers to do most of the driving and guiding. A lot of retirees and other interested residents of Leiden pitch in and help out.
The boat company is De Leidse Rederij at

Starting with a visit to Haarlem, then to Leiden, doing a few day trips out from there. Then to Delft for three more nights and excursions to The Hague, political capital of the nation.
Then to Rotterdam the great modern city of the Netherlands, continuing to Utrecht, a university town with a large historic center and then to Maastricht in the southern part of the country. I'll also be going up to the Alkmaar cheese market which is a lot of fun.
This video is a summary of the trip through the Netherlands. We will be presenting short segments about each city here, but we have 22 movies providing a lot more details about these places so be sure to look for them in our collection.
See the 23 Dutch movies here:
Traveling between cities was so easy because the Netherlands has got perhaps the best train system in Europe. It's phenomenal. The trains are clean, fast, frequent and not expensive. This is a small country, so the cities are relatively close together, you can get from one to the next and 15 or 30 minutes usually. This superb rail service in itself makes a good reason to visit this country, shift for it really does eliminate some of those logistical problems of travel, just getting around. It is so easy with these trains.
Some call it Holland, but the country is The Netherlands. Holland is two provinces in the Netherlands.

FREE WALKING TOUR DEN HAAG | The Hague - Elswhere Tours
Den Haag - aka, The Hague - is an amazing place to base your stay in The Netherlands. It's cheaper than Amsterdam and not nearly as crowded. While I love Amsterdam, I also think the people here are more relaxed.
Today, I did a free walking tour with Els from Elswhere Tours. I highly recommend her. She was pretty sick the day of our tour and she didn't tell us until the end. No one even noticed. I walked a bit with her after the tour and I could tell then that she was putting everything she had into the day for us. Brilliant woman and you'll be glad you took her tour. Here's her site:
Michael visits:
1. Den Haag City Hall
2. The Netherlands Parliament
3. The Dutch Royal Palace in The Hague
4. A Mosque
5. Some Jewish sites
6. Coffee. Lots of coffee!
...and much more!

Parade in The Hague, Netherlands, Prinsjesdag, Prince's Day
One of the most colorful and exciting days of the year in the Netherlands is Prince’s Day (Prinsjesdag) which happens in the Hague when the king rides in his golden coach in a major parade through town with lots of marching bands and soldiers on horseback, with traditional colorful outfits and thousands of people cheering as the parade goes by.
It's a big outdoor party for people of all ages and kids are especially happy because they get the day off from school.
You might be surprised to think that a political speech that's all about the budget for the year would turn out such an enthusiastic crowd, but it's really all about the king and the people's long-standing love and appreciation for the monarchy and they like the razzle-dazzle of the fancy parade.
This special day happens just once a year on the third Tuesday in September and begins at the stroke of one when the king, accompanied by other members of the royal household, leaves the palace in his golden carriage, which is only seen publicly on this one day of the year. Heading to parliament to give a speech, accompanied by court dignitaries and a military escort of honor, along with various marching bands and many soldiers marching by in colorful outfits.
We’re going to show you a lot of the exciting visual highlights and explain to you what's going on during this special day when the government is coming back into session after their summer vacation.

HOLLAND: Vlaggetjesdag 2010 Scheveningen - The Hague [HD]
Vlaggetjesdag is a Dutch festival celebrating the arrival of the first new herring of the year.
This is a tradition that dates back to the 14th century when fishermen went out to sea in their small boats to capture the annual catch.
Today this ritual has become more of a tourist attraction and a way of promoting the new herring season.
Vlaggetjesdag (Flag Day) is celebrated each year around the end of spring, beginning of summer.
Large and small ships are decorated with a rainbow of flags in the harbor at Scheveningen, a vacation resort and seaport located in The Hague, Netherlands.
People from nearby fishing villages put on their traditional costumes, while folk dancing and folk orchestras entertain the crowds with local music.
The way to eat the raw herring, usually as a snack, is to hold it by the tail over one's mouth and lower it while eating. It can also be consumed on a roll, with or without chopped raw onions.
View of the harbor from the ferris wheel: 3:03.
