Rajendra Vilas Palace Mysore Summer Palace Mysore Karnataka tourism Mysore Palace
Rajendra Vilas Palace Mysore Summer Palace Mysore tourism Karnataka tourism Mysore Palace. Rajendra Vilas Palace is atop Chamundi Hills at an elevation of 1000 feet. A smaller older building existed here in the years 1822, which was used as a summer palace by the Wodeyars of Mysore, Royal family of Mysore. Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV was taught philosophy and English in this building. The conception of much bigger Palace was initiated in the 1920s. The Rajendra Vilas Palace was commissioned by Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV and completed in 1938-39. Srikantha Datta Narasimharaja Wodeyar converted Rajendra Vilas Palace into a Palace Hotel, it became a 4 star hotel that hosted many VVIPs. In late 1980s the Palace Hotel was closed citing labour issues! Rajendra Vilas Palace will be left alone without any care for the next 20 years. In early 2000s renovation work began on Rajendra Vilas Palace, but, again Rajendra Vilas Palace is left to fend itself to the harsh weather conditions prevailing in the hill top. In 2004 the property value was stated to be worth Indian Rupees 60 million. Rajendra Vilas Palace is the Kohinoor of Chamundi Hills, I cannot Chamundi Hills without Rajendra Vilas Palace, it's like a body without head. Let's hope n wish the Wodeyars will explore all avenues to restore Rajendra Vilas Palace to its past Golden Days of Glory and Fame! It's one of many historical heritage buildings of Mysore build by the Wodeyars.

Mysore is located in the South Indian state of Karnataka around 140 km from Bangalore. Mysore is well connected through road and rail networks with other parts of Karnataka and India.
Mysore city was the capital of the old royal Mysore province. The word Mysore expands to Mahishasurana Ooru which means the town of Mahishasura. The story goes that the demon Mahishasura was killed by goddess Chamundeshwari atop the Chamundi hill near Mysore, hence the name. Ever since, the Mysore royal family has worshipped Chamundeshwari as the palace deity. Hills dedicated to her stand at the eastern end of Mysore town today.
Dussehra in Mysore is a sight one would remember for a long time even after leaving the place. It is believed that the presiding deity of the city has the power to conquer evil forces and this has led the citizens to celebrate the festival with much gaiety and fervor.
During the month of October and November, for ten days the Dussehra festival is celebrated and the city is at its colorful best with music and dance, Sports, Literary competitions, fairs and exhibitions all over. All this culminates in the Dussehra procession and a torchlight parade on the tenth day.

Mysore (officially Mysuru), is the second largest city in the state of Karnataka. It is also the second largest urban agglomeration in Karnataka in population. It is located in the foothills of the Chamundi Hills about 146 km (91 mi) southwest of Bangalore and spread across an area of 152 sq km (59 sq mi). The estimated population is 10,14,227 as of 2017.
It served as the capital city of the Kingdom of Mysore for nearly six centuries from 1399 until 1956. The Kingdom was ruled by the Wadiyar dynasty, with a brief period of interregnum in the 1760s and 70s when Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan were in power.
Mysore Palace is a historical palace and a royal residence of the Wadiyar dynasty and the seat of the Kingdom of Mysore. It is located in the centre of the city, and faces the Chamundi Hills eastward.
The land on which the palace now stands was originally known as puragiri (literally, citadel), and is now known as the Old Fort. Yaduraya built the first palace inside the Old Fort in the 14th century, which was demolished and constructed multiple times. The current structure was constructed between 1897 and 1912, after the Old Palace was burnt ablaze.
Mysore Palace is now one of the most famous tourist attractions in India, after the Taj Mahal, with more than 6 million annual visitors.
