The Hermitage Theatre
The Hermitage Theatre is one of the oldest in St. Petersburg and in Russia. It was constructed by the architect by order of Catherine the Great in 1783-1789 on the site of the former Winter Palace of Peter the Great. The auditorium of the theatre was constructed to be similar to one of antiquity: semi-circular rows of seats rise from the stage of the amphitheatre. The walls and colonnades are decorated in coloured, artificial marble. Sculptures of Apollo and the nine muses are located in alcoves and beneath them are bas-reliefs with portraits of famous musicians and poets.
The first season of the Hermitage Theatre opened before the finishing work was completed on 16 November 1785, with a performance of the opera The Miller who was a Wizard, a Cheat and a Matchmaker (music М.М. Sokolovsky, libretto А.О. Ablesimov). On 20 January 1789, the comic opera Kosometovich, the Woeful Knight, with the libretto written by Catherine the Great had its premiere at the theatre.
Under Alexander I masquerade balls were often held here. For three years from 1823 to 1826 the theatre was used as a military parade ground. Later plays were reintroduced.
An interesting chapter in the life of the theatre is associated with the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. In 1894, restoration work was carried out under the supervision of the architect А. F. Kvasov. In 1902, architect Leon Benois completed the theatrical foyer in the style of the rococo. Such artists as F.I. Chaliapin, L.V. Sobinov, M.F. Kshesinskaya, А.P. Pavlova, and А.Ya. Vaganova had performed in this theatre. In 1914, a performance of the play King of the Jews was held. Its author, known by his pseudonym К.R., was the Great Prince Konstantin Konstantinovich Romanov, a poet and one of the most educated people of his times.
The dramatic events of 1917 could not but be reflected in the life of the theatre. It became the site for the Lunacharsky Workers' University, in the 1930s various concerts, ballet performances and operas were held. In 1935, the theatre ceased to operate.
For many years the location was used for lectures by the State Hermitage Museum. In the early 1980s, a decision was taken to carry out full repairs and restoration on the theatre. As part of the reconstruction the theatre was provided with modern equipment. In January 1991, the Hermitage Theatre opened its doors once again to the public. Today it is one of the most popular stages in St. Petersburg.

Its collections, of which only a small part is on permanent display, comprise over three million items (the numismatic collection accounts for about one third of them), including the largest collection of paintings in the world. The collections occupy a large complex of six historic buildings along Palace Embankment, including the Winter Palace, a former residence of Russian emperors. Apart from them, the Menshikov Palace, Museum of Porcelain, Storage Facility at Staraya Derevnya and the eastern wing of the General Staff Building are also part of the museum. The museum has several exhibition centers abroad. Since July 1992, the director of the museum has been Mikhail Piotrovsky.
From rare Rembrandts, da Vincis, Michelangelos and Picassos to ancient art from Greece, Italy, Rome and China, there is something to charm every visitor. There is so much to see and enjoy in this truly magical museum that a day or two won’t cover them all. Experts say that if you were to spend one minute looking at each exhibit, it would take you about 11 years to get out the exit.

Of the six buildings in the main museum complex, five—namely the Winter Palace, Small Hermitage, Old Hermitage, New Hermitage, and Hermitage Theatre—are open to the public. The entrance ticket for foreign tourists costs more than the fee paid by citizens of Russia and Belarus. However, entrance is free of charge the third Thursday of every month for all visitors, and free daily for students and children. The museum is closed on Mondays. The entrance for individual visitors is located in the Winter Palace, accessible from the Courtyard.
Originally, the only building housing the collection was the Small Hermitage. Today, the Hermitage Museum encompasses many buildings on the Palace Embankment and its neighbourhoods. Apart from the Small Hermitage, the museum now also includes the Old Hermitage, the New Hermitage, the Hermitage Theatre, and the Winter Palace, the former main residence of the Russian tsars. In recent years, the Hermitage has expanded to the General Staff Building on the Palace Square facing the Winter Palace, and the Menshikov Palace.
Collections
The Western European Art collection includes European paintings, sculpture, and applied art from the 13th to the 20th centuries. It is displayed, in about 120 rooms, on the first and second floor of the four main buildings. Drawings and prints are displayed in temporary exhibitions.
Egyptian antiquities
Since 1940, the Egyptian collection, dating back to 1852 and including the former Castiglione Collection, has occupied a large hall on the ground floor in the eastern part of the Winter Palace. It serves as a passage to the exhibition of Classical Antiquities. A modest collection of the culture of Ancient Mesopotamia, including a number of Assyrian reliefs from Babylon, Dur-Sharrukin and Nimrud, is located in the same part of the building.
Classical antiquities
The collection of classical antiquities occupies most of the ground floor of the Old and New Hermitage buildings. The interiors of the ground floor were designed by German architect Leo von Klenze in the Greek revival style in the early 1850s, using painted polished stucco and columns of natural marble and granite. One of the largest and most notable interiors of the first floor is the Hall of Twenty Columns, divided into three parts by two rows of grey monolithic columns of Serdobol granite, intended for the display of Graeco-Etruscan vases. Its floor is made of a modern marble mosaic imitating ancient tradition, while the stucco walls and ceiling are covered in painting.
The Room of the Great Vase in the western wing features the 2.57 m high Kolyvan Vase, weighing 19 ton, made of jasper in 1843 and installed before the walls were erected. While the western wing was designed for exhibitions, the rooms on the ground floor in the eastern wing of the New Hermitage, now also hosting exhibitions, were originally intended for libraries. The floor of the Athena Room in the south-eastern corner of the building, one of the original libraries, is decorated with an authentic 4th-century mosaic excavated in an early Christian basilica in Chersonesos in 1854.
