James Turrell - The Light Inside, 1999 (The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston TX) 2017
In the mid-1960s James Turrell pioneered a new concern with the phenomena of space and light, often referred to as the Light & Space Movement. Turrell sought not to depict light but to use light itself as his material, and his earliest works investigated the effects of artificial light. He also developed a number of installations that heightened the relationship between light and the architectural frame. The MFAH commissioned Turrell’s The Light Inside for the underground tunnel linking the museum's Caroline Wiess Law Building with the Audrey Jones Beck Building when the latter opened in 2000. The Light Inside turns the walls of the tunnel into vessels for conducting light. An expanded version of his earlier explorations of light in his Shallow Space Construction series, Turrell’s The Light Inside is an all-encompassing environment. Transcending the traditional confines of built spaces, The Light Inside acts as both a passage and a destination. The raised walkway guides visitors forward and gives them the sense of floating in space, while the changing cycle of illumination (which shifts from blue, to crimson, to magenta) further invites contemplation. The Light Inside makes the experience of moving between the Law and the Beck Buildings not only an exploration of light and space, but also a profound and awe-inspiring experience.

Museum attendance totals over two million visitors each year. The museum complex consists of a central facility with four floors of natural science halls and exhibits, the Burke Baker Planetarium, the Cockrell Butterfly Center, and the Wortham Giant Screen Theatre . The museum is one of the most popular in the United States and ranks just below New York City's American Museum of Natural History and Metropolitan Museum of Art and the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco in most attendance amongst non-Smithsonian museums. Much of the museum's popularity is attributed to its large number of special or guest exhibits.
The initial museum organization was called the Houston Museum and Scientific Society, Inc., and was created in 1909. The museum's primary collection was acquired between 1914 and 1930. This included the purchase of a natural-history collection assembled by Henry Philemon Attwater and a donation from collector John Milsaps, the latter of which formed the core of the museum's gem and mineral collection. First housed in Houston's city auditorium, the collection was subsequently housed in the Central Library for seven years, and then at a site in the Houston Zoo in 1929. The museum's now wide-ranging education programs began in 1947 and, in its second year, hosted 12,000 children.

HMNS Houston Museum of Natural Science New Dinosaur Hall Grand Opening Part 1
Josh was actually scared of the dinosaurs! He loved the interactive stations and science area and the virtual ancient aquarium.
This certainly was the year of the Dinosaur at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. They have a first class paleontology hall that is the length of a football field. I would put it among the top 5 in the world.
T. rex featuring the best preserved and most complete hands and feet of any T. rex ever found, as well as patches of original skin - the likes of which have never before been seen
- Touchable specimens, including real, fossilized dinosaur skin, that allow you to pet a dinosaur
- A virtual, ancient aquarium, where fossils will come to life
- A nesting site for a Quetzalcoatlus family - ancient pterosaurs with 30-foot wingspans - bigger than a modern jet fighter
- Fossils brought to life through original artelephant
