Nashville is the capital of the U.S. state of Tennessee and home to Vanderbilt University. Legendary country music venues include the Grand Ole Opry House, home of the famous “Grand Ole Opry” stage and radio show. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and historic Ryman Auditorium are Downtown, as is the District, featuring honky-tonks with live music and the Johnny Cash Museum, celebrating the singer's life.
For country-music fans and wannabe songwriters all over the world, a trip to Nashville is the ultimate pilgrimage. Since the 1920s the city has been attracting musicians, who have taken the country genre from the ‘hillbilly music’ of the early 20th century to the slick ‘Nashville sound’ of the 1960s to the punk-tinged alt-country of the 1990s.
Nashville's many musical attractions range from the Country Music Hall of Fame to the revered Grand Ole Opry to Jack White’s niche record label. It also has a lively university community and a blistering hot restaurant scene.
The Country Music Hall of Fame in downtown Nashville traces the history of country music while museums dedicated to Johnny Cash, George Jones and Willie Nelson delve into their personal stories. The weekly country music show the Grand Ole Opry, first broadcast on a Nashville radio station, celebrated its 90th birthday in 2015.
The music scene today is as vibrant as ever: seven days a week the neon lights and beer-perfumed air of Lower Broadway draw crowds of grinning music lovers into its rumbling honky-tonks, while just to the south the vast undulating roof of Music City Center imprints a giant guitar shape onto the skyline. The Grand Ole Opry wows guests at Opryland and Ryman Auditorium, while hordes of country music fans descend on the city for the CMA Music Festival, featuring live performances by today's biggest stars. The country-music television drama Nashville filmed in and around the city for four seasons beginning in 2011.
If you need a break from bachelorette party shenanigans or a boring convention panel, step outside for natural distractions aplenty. An ever-growing network of pedestrian and bike-friendly greenways links Nashville's city parks, which unfurl over rolling hills and lush riparian landscapes. B-Cycle bike-rental stations are conveniently placed at greenway trailheads. Nature and outdoor centers inside the larger parks offer kid-friendly activities and nature walks. In total, the city park system sprawls across more than 12,000 acres in 108 parks. Kayaking and canoeing trips on the gentle Harpeth River are well-suited to families.

Loretta Lynn's Ranch, Hurricane Mills, Tennessee
In this video Salvatore Vinciguerra gives you a tour of Loretta Lynn's Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. First, he shows you buildings used in making the motion picture A Coal Miner's Daughter. They are replicas of Loretta's house and the coal mine in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky. He then gives you a tour inside Loretta's Mansion and Museum. Later, he gives you a surprise peak at a wedding taking place in the front of Loretta's house.
Please note that Salvatore did not know at the time he visited and filmed this video that Loretta's Mansion was haunted. Parts of Loretta's property was used as a battlefield in the American Civil War and three soldiers are buried on her property. The Mansion has a slave pit located underneath the house. Loretta, her family, property caretakers, and visitors have had interactions with ghosts in her home.
Loretta does have her own campground. However, I visited during Loretta Lynn's Motocross race and had to stay in Nashville located an hour away from Hurricane Mills.

Loretta Lynn's Kitchen Restaurant and Dude Ranch Complex Overview - July 2013
We accidentally discovered Loretta Lynn's Kitchen Restaurant/Gift Shop and Dude Ranch while on a short road trip from Florida to Tennessee. Our plans were to stay two nights in Chattanooga, two nights in Nashville, and two nights in Memphis -- and this was not part of our itinerary, so we did not have enough time to thoroughly explore or tour all the interesting historical buildings and museums. Hopefully we will be able to return to this unique place full of history, tucked in the rolling hills of Tennessee about 75 miles west of Nashville.
And it was truly an honor to recently attend a Loretta Lynn concert at Peabody Auditorium (9/13/13), but unfortunately Loretta had been involved in a mishap in her home and was suffering from broken ribs, so she was not quite up to par -- however, at age 81, she did a FANTASTIC job entertaining a full auditorium of fans! The down-to-earth star is only the second country artist to be named as a recipient of the nation's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Tennessee Ernie Ford was the first. Loretta is also known as The Coal Miner's Daughter, The First Lady of Country Music, The Decca Doll, and The Queen of Country Music.
Loretta Lynn, born 4/14/32, married Oliver Lynn, commonly known as Doolittle or Mooney (for running moonshine), on 1/10/48 after meeting and courting for a month. Mooney was 21 and Loretta was 15. In an effort to break free of the coal mining industry, the couple moved to the logging community of Custer, Washington. The Lynns had three children by the time Loretta was 19 and gave birth to their fourth child, Cissie by age 20. The Lynns had 6 children altogether. Loretta became a grandmother at age 29 (1961), three years before her twins were born. Loretta has 21 grandchildren and their ages range from 52 to 11, born between 1961 to 2002. She is now a great-great grandmother. Loretta has survived two of her six children. Jack Benny who was Loretta's second child and eldest son, died at age 34 on July 22, 1984 while trying to ford the Duck River at the family's ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. Loretta's eldest child, daughter Betty Sue, died at age 64 from emphysema on July 29, 2013 near Loretta's ranch in Hurricane Mills.
The 6500 acre Dude Ranch offers not only a playground, swimming pool, paddle boats and canoeing, but also cabin rentals and a fully equipped RV Park. According to Loretta's daughter Peggy Lynn, Hurricane Mills is a real Mayberry. Picture this historic little town with a Grist Mill built in the 1800's, the site of Civil War battles and Indians and a beautiful antebellum home. You can bring your family and camp beside a freezing cold spring-fed creek, where you can swim or catch rainbow trout. You can follow miles of trails on mountain bikes, motorcycles or horseback, or go canoeing and kayaking in the river. During the day you can get homemade biscuits and sausage. In the evenings on weekends it's a concert venue with the likes of Merle Haggard, Charlie Daniels, and Johnny Lee.
Loretta Lynn still lives in a house right behind the plantation home, and you may catch a glimpse of her if you're fortunate. There are several museums, and historical tours, and also rodeos and the annual Grand National Motorcross. Loretta performs on Memorial weekend, 4th of July weekend, and Labor Day, and she is scheduled to host a Gospel Music Festival in late September.
