Kilkenny is one of the most beautiful towns in the Republic Of Ireland and numerous historic buildings highlight the city’s colourful past. Since the end of the 12th century, Kilkenny Castle, located close to the Nore River, has been the town’s most prominent landmark.In 1391 the castle was acquired by the Butler’s, an aristocratic family that influenced Kilkenny right up until the 20th century. The city was founded by Saint Canice who in the 6th century had a monastery built close to the River Nore and at the time of the Anglo Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169 four church communities existed here. Located in Parliament Street, Rothe House dates back to 1594 and is another of the city’s popular historic sights. Renovated in 1966, the building complex contains three houses that are grouped around two tranquil inner courtyards. Kilkenny has retained its unique historic atmosphere right up to the present day and can thus justifiably be referred to as ‘The jewel of the Irish Middle Ages’.

After the success of For ever Fortune, early music from Scotland, François Lazarevitch continues his exploration of the ‘Celtic’ repertories with a new programme devoted to early Irish music. This repertory of old airs from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries consists of dances, songs in Gaelic and varied instrumental pieces: they tell tales of wars, of love, of strong drink and tobacco, of children and bards. A leading specialist in the flute and bagpipe families, François Lazarevitch opens out new horizons of colours and sounds. He has gathered around him here a number of distinguished performers of early music (including the fabulous Baroque violinist and fiddler David Greenberg) and invited the American tenor Robert Getchell, who cuts a very credible figure as a singer going back to his roots.

Robbie O'Connell & Finbar Clancy - Kilkelly Ireland Song (1995)
Over the past several months I have been tracing my ancestors. For those of you who have not yet done so I heartily recommend it. It's a great way to reconnect to your family and your history. It is also a journey of many surprises. You will likely learn that you are not who you think you are.
Kilkelly, Ireland is a song by Steven and Peter Jones. It tells the story of an Irish emigrant to America through a series of letters from his father back in Kilkelly. It has five verses covering the period between 1860 and 1892.
The Jones brothers based the song on letters from their great-great-grandfather, Brian Hunt, to his son John, their great-grandfather. As Brian was illiterate, the letters were actually written by dictation to the local schoolmaster, Patrick McNamara, who had been a friend of John's.
It has been covered by many artists, including Robbie O'Connell, Atwater-Donnelly, The Dubliners, Mick Moloney, Seán Keane, Ciara Considine, Jim Brannigan, and David Gans (with Eric Rawlins).
