Roadtrip Nation: Talks at Google
So what are you gonna do with your life?
You should be a lawyer, a doctor, an accountant, a consultant, blah, blah, blah. Everywhere you turn people try to tell you who to be and what to do with your life. We call that the noise. Block it. Shed it. Leave it for the conformists. As a generation, we need to get back to focusing on individuality. Self-construction rather than mass production. Define your own road in life instead of traveling down someone else's. Listen to yourself. Your road is the open road. Find it. —Mike and Nathan
After college Mike Marriner and Nathan Gebhard had no idea what to do with their lives. All they'd been exposed to were standard career paths like doctor and consultant—roads that didn't fit them at all.
To see what else was out there they took a roadtrip across the nation in a huge forty-foot RV to meet with people who had successfully defined their own paths in life—including the chairman of Starbucks; a lobsterman from Maine; the director of Saturday Night Live; the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic; the first female Supreme Court Justice of the United States; head stylist for Madonna; and the CEO of National Geographic Ventures. All told, one hundred and forty people candidly shared their stories about how they got from college to the present. Now in Roadtrip Nation, Mike and Nathan share the most compelling tales with you.
Along the way, they explain how you, too, can get out there and meet people on your own. From making cold calls to asking stimulating interview questions, Roadtrip Nation will give you the tools to create a life that you'll look back on and say: I was true to myself every step of the way.

The Remains Of The Day
Academy Award-winners Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson star in this moving tale of butler whose devotion to duty prevents him from acknowledging his love for the housekeeper working beside him. Set on a baronial estate in pre-World War II England, this poignant drama of denied romance plays against a backdrop of the growing threat of Nazism in Europe. © 1993 Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc. SUMMARY
=======
A timeline of United States inventions (1890–1945) encompasses the ingenuity and innovative advancements of the United States within a historical context, dating from the Progressive Era to the end of World War II, which have been achieved by inventors who are either native-born or naturalized citizens of the United States. Copyright protection secures a person's right to his or her first-to-invent claim of the original invention in question, highlighted in Article I, Section 8, Clause 8 of the United States Constitution which gives the following enumerated power to the United States Congress:
In 1641, the first patent in North America was issued to Samuel Winslow by the General Court of Massachusetts for a new method of making salt. On April 10, 1790, President George Washington signed the Patent Act of 1790 (1 Stat. 109) into law which proclaimed that patents were to be authorized for any useful art, manufacture, engine, machine, or device, or any improvement therein not before known or used. On July 31, 1790, Samuel Hopkins of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, became the first person in the United States to file and to be granted a patent under the new U.S. patent statute. The Patent Act of 1836 (Ch. 357, 5 Stat. 117) further clarified United States patent law to the extent of establishing a patent office where patent applications are filed, processed, and granted, contingent upon the language and scope of the claimant's invention, for a patent term of 14 years with an extension of up to an additional 7 years. From 1836 to 2011, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted a total of 7,861,317 patents relating to several well-known inventions appearing throughout the timeline below. Some examples of patented inventions between the years 1890 and 1945 include John Froelich's tractor (1892), Ransom Eli Olds' assembly line (1901), Willis Carrier's air-conditioning (1902), the Wright Brothers' airplane (1903), and Robert H. Goddard's liquid-fuel rocket (1926).

Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse -
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 -
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought -
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times -
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 -
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution -

Dr. Clarence B. Jones gave Juilliard's annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Lecture and received the President's Medal on January 23, 2020. Read more about the visit in the Juilliard Journal
During MLK week, Juilliard hosted a series of events with Dr. Clarence B. Jones. To cap off the series, Dr. Jones was honored with the President's Medal presented by Damian Woetzel. The ceremony included a performance by the Abeo Quartet, welcome remarks by faculty member Renée Baron and an introduction by Damian Woetzel, and a performance by Anthony McGill, artistic director of the Music Advancement Program, including Mendelssohn's “O for the wings of a dove,” Beethoven's “Ode to Joy,” and an excerpt from Puccini's “Un bel di” from Madama Butterfly. The event was rounded out with a presentation of the President's Medal to Dr. Jones by Damian Woetzel, Dr. Jones' lecture Apostle of Love, Nonviolence, and the Pursuit of Excellence, and a Q & A moderated by Renée Baron.
Clarence B. Jones was a lawyer and speechwriter for Martin Luther King, Jr. During his residency at Stanford University's Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute, Dr. Jones worked on his memoirs and he has published two books: What Would Martin Say? (2008) and Behind the Dream: The Making of the Speech That Transformed a Nation (2012). In his earlier years, Dr. Jones studied clarinet at Juilliard's summer high school program before getting his bachelor's degree at Columbia University.
