The Knights of Royal England are a display team who travel across Europe re-enacting jousting, & tournaments which were popular with the nobility back in the middle ages and during the reign of King Henry VIII.
The Knights were the main event at the Bruce Festival in Carrickfergus. At the end of the video you'll hear music from the Down and out Bluegrass Band & the Bearnagh Folk group

Carrickfergus is a large town in county Antrim, Northern Ireland that is sometimes also referred to as Carrick and it is actually the oldest town in county Antrim and one of the oldest when it comes to Northern Ireland as a whole. Carrickfergus sits on the north shore of Belfast Lough and it is a town land of 65 acre, a civil parish and a barony.
From where did the name Carrickfergus actually come? It is believed that the name of this town in Northern Ireland comes from Fergus Mor (Fergus the Great), the legendary king of Dál Riata. Back in time, Carrickfergus actually predated Belfast which is now the capital of Northern Ireland and it was even considered larger than the nearby city. The interesting thing is that back in time, Carrickfergus and the surrounding area was actually treated as a separate county back in the old days. (
One of the top landmarks of Carrickfergus town is Carrickfergus Castle, which was built back by John de Courcy, the Anglo-Norman knight who invaded Ulster and established his headquarters. This castle is built on the rock of Fergus and it is known as one of the best preserved Norman castles in Ireland. (
Carrickfergus Castle is considered the most famous when it comes to the attractions and landmarks of this town, but there are a couple of things to be kept in mind for those visiting it in order not to leave without checking them. The castle will stand on top of the list, but there is also Belfast Lough and sitting just by it, there is Ulster Folk and Transport Museum ( there is also Flame Gasworks and Shaftesbury Park.
Walking through the streets of the town could get you introduced to some other important attractions found there, such as Carrickfergus Marina, The Knights statue, U.S. Rangers Centre and Carrickfergus Town Walls.
Being a famous big town found in Northern Ireland and having different landmarks that call out for the visitors to go to and check, we have to mention that Carrickfergus has also left its mark on a song that was also named Carrickfergus. Carrickfergus song was released in 1965 and was first recorded under the name The Kerry Boatman by Dominic Behan on an LP called The Irish Rover. This song was recorded one more time afterwards by the Clancy brothers.
The meaning of the name Carrickfergus is rock of Fergus and this goes back to King Fergus who was the one to find Carrickfergus and who was shipwrecked off the coast at a strategic position on a rocky spur above the harbour, and that is exactly where Carrickfergus Castle is actually located now, the castle that played a great role in the history of Northern Ireland.

A colourful, action-packed spectacle of courage, strength and skill performed by the Knights of Destrier in the Royal Arena, in the grounds of the historic and picturesque Herstmonceux Castle, East Sussex. This film shows highlights from the authentic jousting tournament.
Transport yourself back in time to the most favourite form of Medieval entertainment, an exciting and colourful pageant where you can watch mounted knights charging towards each other on their destriers, at up to 40 miles per hour, using lances to defeat and hopefully dismount their opponents. Medieval jousting tournaments were the training grounds for Knights of the Middle ages but were also great entertainment for the local people. A thrilling and enjoyable show suitable for all the family.
The Knights of Destrier are one of the pioneers of modern jousting re-enactments, staging displays since 2000, in the UK and across Europe, the USA and Canada. Amongst others they have worked in collaboration with English Heritage.
England’s Medieval Festival is the largest event of it’s kind in England and is held annually in the grounds of Herstmonceux Castle, in East Sussex, over a weekend in August. The event has grown in popularity and has been running now for over 20 years.
The Festival offers a mix of entertainment to suit everyone, full-scale battle re-enactments, combat displays, jousting, archery, falconry displays, children’s entertainers, musicians and living history encampments. The Festival takes place in the castle grounds and visitors are also free to roam around the exterior of the castle and gardens, including Elizabethan and Shakespearean. The festival has excellent facilities including numerous food and drink stalls. There are also many medieval craft stalls and tents to visit and browse.
Herstmonceux is a grand Tudor castle, surrounded by a moat on three sides, situated in the beautiful Sussex countryside. Built in 1441, by Sir Roger Fiennes, Treaurer of the Household of Henry VI, it is one of the oldest remaining, significant brick buildings in England. His brother had fought for Henry V at theBattle of Agincourt.
Later notable visitors to the castle included Anne of Cleaves, in 1540, one of the many wives of Henry VIII. The castle subsequently fell into disrepair until in 1911 it was acquired by Lt Colonel Claude Lowther in 1911, a conservative MP, who started the reconstruction work. Lowther created a number of volunteer Royal Sussex Regiments, who went to fight in France and Belgium during the first world war. The Royal Greenwich Observatory bought the castle in 1946 and it served as a scientific institution for over 40 years.
Although there is evidence of occupation during Roman times Herstmonceux was first mentioned in the Domesday book, following the Norman invasion by William the Conqueror. The name is derived from the marriage between a Norman nobleman and a Saxon lady.
