Two hikers in California got the shock of their lives when they came face-to-face with a mountain lion. Brian McKinney and Sam Vonderheide were on the High Sierra Trail in Sequoia National Park on July 23 when they locked eyes with the beast as it stood stoic on the mountain. The hikers, who recorded the incident, contemplated what to do. One wanted to run away but the ferocious cat looked ready to pounce. At the end of the clip, they slowly back away from the beast.

When you first walk through the doors of Butler’s courtyard, you walk into the parlor. We will have someone greeting your guests at the door. They will take the gifts and put them inside the vault.
Then you walk on and see the main hall. The main hall is where the food is, the dance floor, the DJ… That is the main room.
We are an inside-outside facility, so the next thing we’ll walk through the door of the courtyard. There’s a really nice brick ledge around the three-tier fountain and that’s where everybody congregates. They love being outside.
Then you’re going to walk up into Rose Cottage. That’s a house that was built in 1920. It’s a humble oil field house moved here from Baytown. That’s the cottage the bride has for the whole day. She can come in from 10:00 on, have her hair and makeup and all her girls, have lunch brought in… It’s a really fun place to just prepare.
We also have our fun groom’s house. He’s got a big screen TV, a foosball table, leather couches… It’s wonderful. He gets to come in, also be there as early as he’d like to get his guys here. They can watch TV, bring their Xboxes, have lunch. It’s a fun place for them as well.
We feel that we’ve really captured everything they need in a day to have that wonderful experience and a life memory.

Lansing is the capital of the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located mostly in Ingham County, although portions of the city extend west into Eaton County and north into Clinton County. The 2010 Census placed the city's population at 114,297, making it the fifth largest city in Michigan. The population of its Metropolitan Statistical Area was 464,036, while the even larger Combined Statistical Area population, which includes Shiawassee County, was 534,684. It was named the new state capital of Michigan in 1847, ten years after its admittance as a state.
The Lansing Metropolitan Area, colloquially referred to as Mid-Michigan, is an important center for educational, cultural, governmental, commercial, and industrial functions. The area is home to two medical schools, one veterinary school, two nursing schools, two law schools—including Western Michigan University and Michigan State University—a Big Ten Conference university, the Michigan State Capitol, the state Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals, a federal court, the Library of Michigan and Historical Center, and headquarters of four national insurance companies.

A Folklorist's Tale: Stories of Tangible Culture, Intangible Culture & the Politics of Culture
Folklorist and scholar Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett drew from her multifaceted career to explore the role of folklore in shaping contemporary cultural discourse. Specifically, she discussed her experiences as chief curator charged with creating the multimedia narrative exhibition at the recently opened POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. How did she approach blending intangible cultural heritage with tangible cultural artifacts to tell the thousand-year story of Polish Jews in a place where little tangible heritage remains? What were the political and cultural challenges in bringing this history to life? And how did her training as a folklorist influence and shape her curatorial decisions?
Speaker Biography: Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimbett is distinguished professor emerita of performance studies at New York University and served as chief curator of the core exhibition at the recently-opened POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw. Originally from Toronto, she received her doctorate in folklore from Indiana University and began a multifaceted career in both academic and public sector work.

Iowa ( (listen)) is a state in the Midwestern United States, bordered by the Mississippi River to the east and the Missouri River and Big Sioux River to the west. It is bordered by six states; Wisconsin to the northeast, Illinois to the east, Missouri to the south, Nebraska to the west, South Dakota to the northwest and Minnesota to the north.
In colonial times, Iowa was a part of French Louisiana and Spanish Louisiana; its state flag is patterned after the flag of France. After the Louisiana Purchase, people laid the foundation for an agriculture-based economy in the heart of the Corn Belt.In the latter half of the 20th century, Iowa's agricultural economy made the transition to a diversified economy of advanced manufacturing, processing, financial services, information technology, biotechnology, and green energy production. Iowa is the 26th most extensive in land area and the 30th most populous of the 50 U.S states. Its capital and largest city by population is Des Moines. Iowa has been listed as one of the safest states in which to live. Its nickname is the Hawkeye State.
Dragnet: Brick-Bat Slayer / Tom Laval / Second-Hand Killer
Dragnet is a radio and television crime drama about the cases of a dedicated Los Angeles police detective, Sergeant Joe Friday, and his partners. The show takes its name from an actual police term, a dragnet, meaning a system of coordinated measures for apprehending criminals or suspects.
Dragnet debuted inauspiciously. The first several months were bumpy, as Webb and company worked out the program's format and eventually became comfortable with their characters (Friday was originally portrayed as more brash and forceful than his later usually relaxed demeanor). Gradually, Friday's deadpan, fast-talking persona emerged, described by John Dunning as a cop's cop, tough but not hard, conservative but caring. (Dunning, 210) Friday's first partner was Sergeant Ben Romero, portrayed by Barton Yarborough, a longtime radio actor. After Yarborough's death in 1951 (and therefore Romero's, who also died of a heart attack, as acknowledged on the December 27, 1951 episode The Big Sorrow), Friday was partnered with Sergeant Ed Jacobs (December 27, 1951 - April 10, 1952, subsequently transferred to the Police Academy as an instructor), played by Barney Phillips; Officer Bill Lockwood (Ben Romero's nephew, April 17, 1952 - May 8, 1952), played by Martin Milner (with Ken Peters taking the role for the June 12, 1952 episode The Big Donation); and finally Frank Smith, played first by Herb Ellis (1952), then Ben Alexander (September 21, 1952-1959). Raymond Burr was on board to play the Chief of Detectives. When Dragnet hit its stride, it became one of radio's top-rated shows.
Webb insisted on realism in every aspect of the show. The dialogue was clipped, understated and sparse, influenced by the hardboiled school of crime fiction. Scripts were fast moving but didn't seem rushed. Every aspect of police work was chronicled, step by step: From patrols and paperwork, to crime scene investigation, lab work and questioning witnesses or suspects. The detectives' personal lives were mentioned but rarely took center stage. (Friday was a bachelor who lived with his mother; Romero, a Mexican-American from Texas, was an ever fretful husband and father.) Underplaying is still acting, Webb told Time. We try to make it as real as a guy pouring a cup of coffee. (Dunning, 209) Los Angeles police chiefs C.B. Horrall, William A. Worton, and (later) William H. Parker were credited as consultants, and many police officers were fans.
Most of the later episodes were entitled The Big _____, where the key word denoted a person or thing in the plot. In numerous episodes, this would the principal suspect, victim, or physical target of the crime, but in others was often a seemingly inconsequential detail eventually revealed to be key evidence in solving the crime. For example, in The Big Streetcar the background noise of a passing streetcar helps to establish the location of a phone booth used by the suspect.
Throughout the series' radio years, one can find interesting glimpses of pre-renewal Downtown L.A., still full of working class residents and the cheap bars, cafes, hotels and boarding houses which served them. At the climax of the early episode James Vickers, the chase leads to the Subway Terminal Building, where the robber flees into one of the tunnels only to be killed by an oncoming train.
