Manila is the capital of the Philippines and is a highly urbanized city. Manila is also known as The Pearl of the Orient. Manila contains many of the country's largest and most prestigious universities and is also home to the National Library. The people in Manila speak Tagalog, but most are also fluent in English. Manila is where the busiest and huge shopping malls are located, such as The SM Mega Malls, Mall of Asia, SM City North and many more.
Manila is the main entry point into the Philippines for international travelers. Every year, almost two million tourists who visit Philippines travel through Manila.

Liberation: Battle of Manila
The battle for the liberation of Manila—waged from February 3 to March 3, 1945, between Philippine and American forces, and the Imperial Japanese forces—is widely considered to be one of the greatest tragedies of the Second World War. One hundred thousand men, women, and children perished. Architectural heritage was reduced to rubble—the City of Manila was the second most devastated Allied capital of World War II.
