The Lightning Field, Catron County, New Mexico
Deep in a remote desert region of New Mexico is a field of 400 polished stainless steel poles–each an ideal conductor of electricity during passing lightning storms. American sculptor Walter De Maria’s Lighting Field is an icon of an art movement known as “Land Art” and a spectacular show of nature’s sheer force and beauty.

Favorite Thing About Living in NM: Chasing the Monsoon
One of my favorite things about living in New Mexico is being able to witness the North American Monsoon. I absolutely love watching cumulus clouds tower over high desert landscapes, sunsets radiating over mountainous horizons, and lucent lightning strikes from storms.

Pie Town - New Mexico True Stories
This tiny community tucked in southwestern New Mexico has a name that will pique your curiosity and make your mouth water at the same time.
“We pulled up and there was a little sign on the door: ‘Used to be pie in Pie Town … ain’t no more,” said Kathy Knapp, owner of the Pie-O-Neer, describing Pie Town before they opened their shop in 1995. “It’s someplace that’s different than anywhere else. The air and the sun … it’s magical.”
Pie Town is located on Highway 60, two miles east of the Continental Divide.

Landing at Springerville Az 4-6-14.
Mark called me at 9am Sunday on 4-06-14 to go flying to Springerville Az. for lunch and of course I said yes. We departed Chandler Az. municipal around 11am and flew up and over the mountians for the hour ride to our destination at 7300ft in Springerville Az. in the eastern part of the state in the White Mountians, not too far from the New Mexico border for lunch to check out a new BBQ place. Usual bumpy ride over the mountians and we arrived to some very cool temps and winds out of the west sustained at 25. The Airport has been drastically improved with a nice terminal but not a soul in sight. Fuel pumps would not accept any credit cards so it was good we had enough fuel onboard to make the return trip back to Chandler. :)

Reserve to Fence Lake
As is common along the NMBDR gas stations are sparse, so don’t forget to top off while in Reserve – the small service station in Luna is often closed. This route parallels Arizona, all it takes is a quick ride 500 feet down a fork to hit the state line. You’ll pass scads of Piñon and Juniper and catch glimpses of ancient cliff dwellings high along the cliffs.
By and by, the track drops down into a high desert and then heads due north to US Highway 60 and the Zuni Reservation. An overlook near the Zuni Salt Lake showcases just how desolate and otherworldly this area truly is.
There’s a wild and terrible beauty in western New Mexico unlike any other state in the Union.

On my way back from Houston last weekend I came across this storm and got a few short videos of it. Lots of lightning, a fair amount of rain, thought I saw a wall cloud at several points but nothing much more interesting than that. Taken from along US 64 outside of Clayton, NM.
Calling All Cars: Oakland Payroll Robbery / Murder by Blueprint / The Human Claw
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is the police department of the city of Los Angeles, California.
The LAPD has been copiously fictionalized in numerous movies, novels and television shows throughout its history. The department has also been associated with a number of controversies, mainly concerned with racial animosity, police brutality and police corruption.
The radio show Calling All Cars hired LAPD radio dispacher Jesse Rosenquist to be the voice of the dispatcher. Rosenquist was already famous because home radios could tune into early police radio frequencies. As the first police radio dispatcher presented to the public ear, his was the voice that actors went to when called upon for a radio dispatcher role.
The iconic television series Dragnet, with LAPD Detective Joe Friday as the primary character, was the first major media representation of the department. Real LAPD operations inspired Jack Webb to create the series and close cooperation with department officers let him make it as realistic as possible, including authentic police equipment and sound recording on-site at the police station.
Due to Dragnet's popularity, LAPD Chief Parker became, after J. Edgar Hoover, the most well known and respected law enforcement official in the nation. In the 1960s, when the LAPD under Chief Thomas Reddin expanded its community relations division and began efforts to reach out to the African-American community, Dragnet followed suit with more emphasis on internal affairs and community policing than solving crimes, the show's previous mainstay.
Several prominent representations of the LAPD and its officers in television and film include Adam-12, Blue Streak, Blue Thunder, Boomtown, The Closer, Colors, Crash, Columbo, Dark Blue, Die Hard, End of Watch, Heat, Hollywood Homicide, Hunter, Internal Affairs, Jackie Brown, L.A. Confidential, Lakeview Terrace, Law & Order: Los Angeles, Life, Numb3rs, The Shield, Southland, Speed, Street Kings, SWAT, Training Day and the Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour and Terminator film series. The LAPD is also featured in the video games Midnight Club II, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, L.A. Noire and Call of Juarez: The Cartel.
The LAPD has also been the subject of numerous novels. Elizabeth Linington used the department as her backdrop in three different series written under three different names, perhaps the most popular being those novel featuring Det. Lt. Luis Mendoza, who was introduced in the Edgar-nominated Case Pending. Joseph Wambaugh, the son of a Pittsburgh policeman, spent fourteen years in the department, using his background to write novels with authentic fictional depictions of life in the LAPD. Wambaugh also created the Emmy-winning TV anthology series Police Story. Wambaugh was also a major influence on James Ellroy, who wrote several novels about the Department set during the 1940s and 1950s, the most famous of which are probably The Black Dahlia, fictionalizing the LAPD's most famous cold case, and L.A. Confidential, which was made into a film of the same name. Both the novel and the film chronicled mass-murder and corruption inside and outside the force during the Parker era. Critic Roger Ebert indicates that the film's characters (from the 1950s) represent the choices ahead for the LAPD: assisting Hollywood limelight, aggressive policing with relaxed ethics, and a straight arrow approach.
