The Living Desert Zoo & Gardens
The Living Desert is an AZA accredited zoo and conservation center whose mission is desert conservation through preservation, education, and appreciation. Founded in 1970 by Karen Sausman, The Living Desert is dedicated to conservation efforts locally and around the world. Our multi-faceted conservation programs include financial commitments, community education, on-site programming, field work, and collaborative partnerships.
Our unwavering commitment to conservation is at the heart of what we do; it has been for over 45 years. We are dedicated to educating our guests about the incredible animals and plants that call the desert home, while informing them that all of us working together can make a difference. Our staff work tirelessly to provide the highest level of care to our animals on a daily basis.

The Living Desert’s mission is desert conservation through preservation, education and appreciation.
The objectives of The Living Desert are:
to preserve a portion of the Colorado Desert in its natural state;
to foster, through interpretive exhibits, programs and publication, an awareness of, and an appreciation for, the variety of plants and animals in worldwide ecosystems;
to build up under controlled conditions, populations of various species of desert animals and plants threatened with extinction in the wild state;
and to foster through cooperative research and educational programs, biological studies contributing to the protection of desert species in a wild state.
We are a non-profit, 501c3 (exempt from taxation) organization with a volunteer Board of Trustees (40), and a paid CEO/President.
The Living Desert’s Board of Trustees is made up of business and community leaders who work with the organization to secure gifts for capital, programming and endowment expansion. Its purpose is to support and enhance zoological programs by providing facilities, funds and advice. The President and the Trustees oversee the Zoo Endowment which helps to provide long-term stability for The Living Desert.
The Living Desert was established in 1970 by several trustees of the Palm Springs Desert Museum who foresaw the impact that resort development would have on their local desert ecosystem. This foresight led to an interpretive nature trail and preserve in Palm Desert. Among the trustees was Philip L. Boyd who also founded the Riverside campus of the University of California and the Deep Canyon Research Station in Palm Desert. Among his first tasks was to hire a resident naturalist. This person turned out to be a young woman with energy, intelligence and ambition, as well as experience as a zoo keeper and park ranger, plus graduate work in wildlife biology.

The vision that built The Living Desert and the love of the desert shared by Phillip Boyd, Karen Sausman, our members, volunteers, staff, trustees, and friends, will be carried forward by our new President and CEO, Allen Monroe.
For almost four decades The Living Desert has been engaged in the important work of preserving, conserving and interpreting the desert and all its varied plant and animal life. Even as we take immense pride in our accomplishments over the last forty years, we remain as dedicated as ever to the goals that initially inspired us when we first began operations in March of 1970.

The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens New Entrance Construction
The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is excited to unveil and officially greet guests through its new entrance on Saturday, November 3, 2018 from 9 am to noon. The opening celebration includes live entertainment and light refreshments and a free gift to the first 1,000 guests through the gate (while supplies last).
Attendees will be welcomed into the Patti and Jack Grundhofer Plaza with palm-lined walkways and new guest service amenities. This beautiful complex completes the first of a three-phase construction project funded through The Living Desert’s Pride of the Desert capital campaign.
Known as Grundhofer Plaza, the entrance includes a variety of innovative features enhancing the visitor’s experience, including self-service kiosks for ticket and tour purchases. Entrance for Zoo members and online ticket purchasers can take advantage of the new scan-and-go entry system. For those interested in membership, train and animal adoptions, private and group tours, or private parties, a dedicated guest relations office will be open during regular park hours.
The Welcome Center serves as a pivotal stop where guests can discover the exciting activities happening throughout the day and plan their visit by watching the state-of-the-art video wall. They can also relax under magnificent 50-foot fever trees in the Living Legacy Endowment Garden. This Garden recognizes the generosity of donors who have made gifts to The Living Desert’s permanent endowment fund, which provides a continuing and growing base of financial support, ensuring this treasured resource will continue for generations to come. The new Suzan and Bill Appel Gift Shop gives attendees the opportunity to purchase from a unique collection of souvenirs, Zoo-branded merchandise, gifts, books, as well as timeless memorabilia.
The completion of the plaza, gift shop, and endowment garden is the culmination of the first phase of The Living Desert’s Crossroads of Conservation, a $30 million capital improvement and park expansion that provides visitors the opportunity to interact with and learn about the world’s desert wildlife. Future plans include new animal habitats to tell the conservation stories of lions, rhinoceros and hyena, plus a modern, indoor event space.

Prepare to be surrounded by more
than 300 fluttering creatures, as The Living Desert announces the grand opening of its newest
exhibit, Butterflies: Winged Wonders, on Saturday, November 7, at 9:30 a.m
The newly constructed 2,500 square-foot habitat was specially built for the butterflies within
the zoo’s existing gardens and flowering plants. The enclosed exhibit allows for the butterflies
to fly freely, while guests enjoy the delicate creatures in an uninhibited way
Winged Wonders will showcase approximately 300 butterflies from more than 30 unique
species. The interactive exhibit will illustrate metamorphosis from egg to butterfly. Guests will
be able get up close and personal with the butterflies and observe such species as the Luna
Moth, Giant Swallowtail, Monarch, Zebra Longwing and more
“This is a unique experience where guests can be fully immersed in an enclosed space with
butterflies flying all around them,” said Allen Monroe, President & CEO of The Living Desert. “It
has been quite a while since we’ve had this exhibit and we are thrilled to bring it back. We
know that it’s going to be a huge hit with guests of all ages.”Butterflies have a four-stage life cycle starting with an egg that has been laid on a host plant.
After the egg hatches into a caterpillar, it eats the host plant. After eating enough to continue
the cycle, the larva prepares to pupate by forming a pupa or chrysalis. When it emerges from
this stage, it has wings and is a fully formed adult butterfly.Experience the wonder of the butterflies while learning about the zoo’s butterfly conservation
efforts and what you can do to assure that they will always thrive in our world. Entrance into
the Butterflies: Winged Wonders Exhibit is $3 for non-members and $2 for members. The
exhibit will be open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

A NIGHT AT THE LIVING DESERT ZOO | VLOG 65
We took a day trip to Palm Desert to visit my mom. We stayed at the Hyatt in Indian Wells to have a little more room for Elon. That night we went to the Wild Lights at the Living Desert. I couldn't believe how many trains they had, pretty amazing. Elon absolutly loved it until we all started to freeze. One jacket was not enough.
Got some cool drone shots of the Renaissance Indian Wells Resort & Spa Golf course. All done shots were on the DJI Mavic.
Took a stab at color grading the footage for once. It's a lot more work but worth it. Really like how it turned out. Let me know what you think in the comments.
