Chicago:The Loop
The Loop, is the central business district in the downtown area of the city.
In what is now the Loop, on the south bank of the Chicago River near today's Michigan Avenue Bridge, the United States Army erected Fort Dearborn in 1803, the first settlement in the area sponsored by the United States. In the late nineteenth century cable car turnarounds and a prominent elevated railway encircled the area, giving the Loop its name. Around the same time some of the world's earliest skyscrapers were constructed in the area. In 1908, Chicago addresses were made uniform by naming the intersection of State Street and Madison Street in the Loop as the origin of the Chicago street grid.
Loop architecture has been dominated by skyscrapers and high-rises since early in its history. Notable buildings include the Home Insurance Building, considered the world's first skyscraper (demolished in 1931); the Chicago Board of Trade Building, a National Historic Landmark; and Willis Tower, the world's tallest building for nearly 25 years.
The Loop contains a wealth of outdoor sculpture, including works by Pablo Picasso. Chicago's cultural heavyweights, such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Goodman Theatre, the Chicago Theatre, the Lyric Opera at the Civic Opera House building, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, are also in this area, as is the historic Palmer House Hilton hotel, found on East Monroe Street.
Chicago's waterfront, which is almost exclusively recreational beach and park areas from north to south, features Grant Park in the downtown area.
The Loop is the seat of Chicago's government. It is also the government seat of Cook County and houses an office for the governor of the State of Illinois.
According to the 2010 census, 29,283 people live in the neighborhoods in or near the Loop. The median sale price for residential real estate was $710,000 in 2005 according to Forbes.
The neighborhood includes former railyards that have been redeveloped as new-town-in-town such as Dearborn Park and Central Station. Former warehouses and factory lofts have been converted to residential buildings, while new townhouses and highrises have been developed on vacant or underused land. A major landowner in the South Loop is Columbia College Chicago, a private school that owns 17 buildings.
The South Loop was historically home to vice districts, including the brothels, bars, burlesque theaters, and arcades. Inexpensive residential hotels on Van Buren and State Street made it one of the city's Skid Rows until the 1970s. One of the largest homeless shelters in the city, the Pacific Garden Mission, was located at State and Balbo from 1923 to 2007, when it moved to 1458 S. Canal St.
The Loop also contains the Chicago Landmark Historic Michigan Boulevard District, which is the section of Michigan Avenue opposite Grant Park and Millennium Park.
The Loop Retail Historic District is a shopping district within the Chicago Loop.
The Loop, along with the rest of downtown Chicago, is the second largest commercial business district in the United States, after New York City's Midtown Manhattan. Its financial district near LaSalle Street is home to the CME Group's Chicago Board of Trade and Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
Aon Corporation maintains its headquarters in the Aon Center. Chase Bank has its commercial and retail banking headquarters in Chase Tower. Exelon also has its headquarters in the Chase Tower. United Airlines has its headquarters in Willis Tower. United moved its headquarters to Chicago from Elk Grove Township, Illinois in early 2007. In addition, United's parent company, United Continental Holdings, also has its headquarters in Willis Tower. Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association has its headquarters in the Michigan Plaza complex. Sidley Austin and Morton Salt are both headquartered in the Loop.

Driving Downtown Streets - LaSalle Street - Chicago Illinois USA - Episode 57.
Starting Point: .
LaSalle Street is a major north-south street in Chicago. The portion that runs through the Chicago Loop is considered to be Chicago's financial district.
The Loop, along with the rest of downtown Chicago, is the second largest commercial business district in the United States, after New York City's Midtown Manhattan. Its financial district near LaSalle Street is home to the CME Group's Chicago Board of Trade and Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
The street was nicknamed The Canyon due to the tall, steep buildings that lie on both ends of the relatively narrow street, with the Chicago Board of Trade Building as the abrupt end of the apparent box canyon.
In Popular Culture
The street, Chicago Board of Trade Building, and 200 North LaSalle were used in the 2005 film Batman Begins and its sequel The Dark Knight, as well as in the 1999 movie Payback. The view facing south down the canyon has been used in the movies The Untouchables, Public Enemies, Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Road to Perdition. The canyon was in the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Chicago: CIBC Theatre
CIBC Theatre is located at 18 West Monroe Street in the Loop area of downtown Chicago.
The theater opened in 1906 as the Majestic Theatre, named for The Majestic Building in which it is housed. The Majestic was a popular vaudeville theater offering approximately 12 to 15 vaudeville acts running from 1:30 pm to 10:30 pm, six days-per-week. By the 1920s the theater had become part of the Orpheum Circuit and presented many famous vaudeville headliners including Al Jolson, Eddie Foy, Harry Houdini, Lily Langtry, and Fanny Brice.
In 1932, the theater closed during the Great Depression. In 1945, the Shubert Organization purchased the venue, remodeled, and reopened it as the Sam Shubert Theatre. The Nederlander Organization purchased the building in 1991, however, Chicago Public Schools owned the land until 1997 when Nederlander also purchased it. Between January 2005 and May 2006, the theater underwent restoration and a name change to the LaSalle Bank Theatre and floors 4-21 of the adjoining office building were converted to the Hampton Inn Majestic Hotel. The hotel & theatre share the building, with the theatre on floors 1-6 & the hotel on floors 4-21.
As the first theater built in Chicago after the Iroquois Theatre fire, the Majestic Theatre was specially cited for its fire safety. This theater was also constructed to bring a more elegant audience into the vaudeville circuit. The architects, Edmund R. Krause and the Rapp Brothers (George and Cornelius), thought that by using decadent colors and textures they could attract a more upper-class crowd than traditionally attended vaudeville. The house of the theater also has two prosceniums. These were constructed to racially segregate the audience, as they prevent patrons on the ground level from seeing the patrons on upper levels. Also, by some sources, this theater was once Chicago's tallest building.
During the 2005–2006 restoration, elevators were finally installed within the theater. Previously, patrons had to exit the theater and use the elevators in the office building to reach the balcony. As part of the general revamp of the theater, paint chips were analyzed and the theater was repainted in what is believed to be the original color scheme. Most of the original fixtures, as well as the mosaic floor installed in the lobby when the theater opened in 1906, remain. Restorers also discovered a hidden archway in the lobby concession space during their work. This elaborately decorated arch had been walled-over years ago and was forgotten until construction began. The theater now holds 1,800 seats.
This theater has been home to many pre-Broadway tours and world premieres. Michael Crawford played a one-night benefit concert for the newly restored theater's opening night May 24, 2006. Martin Short performed in his sketch comedy satire Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me for two weeks in July 2006. High School Musical premiered in July 2007 during its pre-Broadway tour. Jersey Boys began a 28-month run at the theater in October 2007, followed by the pre-Broadway premiere of Cyndi Lauper's Kinky Boots in October and November 2012. The theater hosted a sit-down production of The Book of Mormon which officially opened on December 19, 2012, and played through October 6, 2013. In December 2015, it began the premiere engagement of a new musical Gotta Dance directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell and starring Georgia Engel, Stefanie Powers, Lillias White and Andre DeShields. The production played through January 17, 2016. The theater is hosting a resident production of Hamilton that started September 27, 2016.
As the Shubert Theater, the venue hosted the premiere of The Goodbye Girl in 1993 prior to its Broadway run. The show was an adaption by Neil Simon of his screenplay of the same name with music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by David Zippel and starred Bernadette Peters and Martin Short. In July 1995, the stage adaption of Victor/Victoria premiered starring Julie Andrews, Tony Roberts and Michael Nouri. It ran until September when it moved to New York. In December 2001, John Lithgow starred in Sweet Smell of Success. Movin' Out, based on the songs of Billy Joel and conceived, choreographed and directed by Twyla Tharp, premiered in June 2002. The final production before renovation was Monty Python's Spamalot which began its pre-Broadway run in December 2004. The production was directed by Tony and Academy Award-winner Mike Nichols and starred David Hyde Pierce, Tim Curry and Hank Azaria.

Tracy Chapman - Fast Car Live (with Lyrics)
TESTO E TRADUZIONE, Lyrics:
You got a fast car
And I want a ticket to go anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Anyplace is better
Starting from zero got nothing to lose
Maybe we'll make something
But me myself I got nothing to prove
You got a fast car
And I got a plan to get us out of here
I been working at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
We won't have to drive too far
Just 'cross the border and into the city
You and I can both get jobs
And finally see what it means to be living
You see my old man's got a problem
He live with the bottle that's the way it is
He says his body's too old for working
I say his body's too young to look like his
My mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school and that's what I did
You got a fast car
But is it fast enough so we can fly away
We gotta make a decision
We leave tonight or live and die this way
I remember we were driving driving in your car
The speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
And I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
You got a fast car
And we go cruising to entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
And I work in a market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
We'll move out of the shelter
Buy a big house and live in the suburbs
You got a fast car
And I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do of your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me would find it
I got no plans I ain't going nowhere
So take your fast car and keep on driving
You got a fast car
But is it fast enough so you can fly away
You gotta make a decision
You leave tonight or live and die this way
TRADUZIONE
Hai un auto veloce
voglio un biglietto per ovunque
forse possiamo metterci d'accordo
forse assieme possiamo andare da qualche parte
qualsiasi posto è meglio
iniziando da zero non abbiamo nulla da perdere
forse riusciremo a fare qualcosa
possiamo entrambi trovare lavoro
e finalmente scoprire cosa vuol dire vivere
è veloce abbastanza cosi possiamo volare via
dobbiamo decidere
parti stanotte o vivrai e morirai cosi

Wagner's Ring presents the ultimate challenge for any opera company, and the New York Metropolitan Opera's new production of Der Ring des Nibelungen, unveiled between 2010 and 2012 and starring some of the greatest Wagnerian singers of today, is among the most ambitious Ring stagings ever mounted.
Already seen by over a million people in the theatre and at cinemas around the globe, the Met Ring was filmed live in high definition and is now being released on both DVD and Blu-ray to launch Deutsche Grammophon's celebration of the composer's bicentenary year in 2013.
With Bryn Terfel, widely acknowledged as one of the finest bass-baritones of our age, performing his first complete cycles as the embattled god Wotan and American soprano Deborah Voigt making her role debut as his disobedient warrior-daughter Brünnhilde, alongside international stars Jonas Kaufmann and Eva-Maria Westbroek as the incestuous Siegmund and Sieglinde, and last-minute stand-in Jay Hunter Morris -- a thrilling new tenor from Paris, Texas -- saving the day as the fearless but ill-fated hero Siegfried, the New York Times declared the cast as strong a lineup of vocal artists for a Wagner opera as I have heard in years.
To complement the complete Ring cycle on both DVD and Blu-ray, Deutsche Grammophon is releasing two related titles: Twilight of the Gods, a 2-CD compilation of audio highlights from the Met Ring -- featuring all the major stars of the production and such famous extracts as The Ride of the Valkyries, Wotan's Farewell, the Magic Fire Music, Siegfried's Rhine Journey and the concluding Immolation Scene -- and Wagner's Dream, a frank and revealing documentary about the five-year making of the Met's new Ring that has already been acclaimed as simply the best documentary about the Met ever made (Film Journal), a must-see for any creative soul (Cinespect) and destined to be one of the classic documentaries about opera (Philadelphia Inquirer).

Located in River North at the corner of Orleans and Huron, just west of the art gallery district and just south of another Chicago classic, Club Lago, The Green Door Tavern opened in 1921 and made it through prohibition which was already in full effect at that time. But that didn't stop the owners from selling alcohol. They constructed a speakeasy inside and painted the door green, a symbol that alcohol was secretly being served within. Today, the upper floor of the building is still a bar and restaurant. A selection of 10 beers on tap includes Guinness and Fat Tire, and the menu features burgers and pasta dishes. But walk downstairs and you'll find a virtual museum of odds and ends of the 20th Century. It's definitely a must-see for any Chicago history buff.

Head to west Kinzie Street and dine at the elegant Mercadito Chicago for 11 varieties of tacos and enchiladas. Mercadito also serves a selection of assorted guacamole with strawberries and pineapple among the ingredients. My favorite drink is definitely the Little Market, with dried (gwaheo) guajillo chile around the rim. Did you know that Mercadito offers a late night menu every day of the week after midnight? Take advantage of the late-night Takeeza Time offering all-you-can eat tacos for $23 after 10 p.m. Until closing time Sunday through Thursday and after 11 p.m., and until closing on Friday and Saturday nights, too!

Plan ahead to see a classic fairy tale come to life at the Lyric Opera from Dec 7th through Dec 19th. Based on the dark Brothers Grimm tale, two children name Hansel and Gretel go to a dark forest to find enough food to eat for dinner. Follow the children as they discover a dangerously enticing new place and learn the values of hard work, resourcefulness, and family, not to mention meeting a mysterious woman with a gingerbread house, who takes them in; however, it not long before they learn she's actually a witch, and has made some unorthodox dinner plans involving her young guests. It's a good balance of scary and humor, including a food-flinging scene, Hansel and Gretel appeals to kids, too. So bring them! Don't wait to get your tickets, there's a limited amount!
