Chris Bower invited myself along with Stuart Boughey and Geoff Readman to visit his Exhibition Layout West Hill Wagon Works at it's base in Codnor near Derby.

We were treated to a fantastic day with Chris having plenty of fun operating the layout using his wireless Gaugemaster Prodigy Advance 2 DCC Controllers.

I wish to thank Chris for his incredible hospitality, allowing us to have so much fun with the layout.

Eagle sculpure from Roman London/Londinium

Found in London in September 2013 this is an eagle consuming a snake, carved out of Cotswold limestone some time in the late first or early second century AD. It probably once decorated the tomb of a wealthy and important Roman official just outside the settlement of Roman Londinium, the capital of the province of Britannia. It's 65 cm (about 26) high and is in exceptional condition apart from a stress fracture which has broken off one of the wings. Hardly weathered at all, it must have been protected by being displayed in a niche or recess in a tomb. Interestingly, an almost identical eagle is depicted in a painting from the House of the Vettii at Pompeii. The Pompeii eagle is on a tomb in the background of a painting showing the young Hercules strangling snakes. Cotswold limestone is very soft and easily carved, but therefore equally easily weathered. Romano-British sculptures in this stone are usually fragmented, eroded and battered. At some point the eagle was removed and carefully buried, presumably by someone who was worried about the consequences of damaging or defacing its symbolism. The result is that it is one of the best-preserved pieces of Roman sculpture found in Britain, ironic considering that it was found in one of the busiest cities in the world which has also experienced centuries of huge amounts of rebuilding as well as the Great Fire of 1666 and the Blitz of 1940. With its head tilted to the left the London eagle's posture (though not the snake) is reminiscent of the eagle on a fourth-century mosaic at the Bignor Roman villa in Sussex, though in that instance the eagle is shown carrying off Ganymede. In both cases the eagle represents Jupiter. By consuming a snake the eagle symbolizes the triumph of mighty right over evil and is a known motif from Roman funerary sculpture. The sculpture is currently on display at the Museum of London and is scheduled to be so until summer 2014. It's easily found on the right as you walk towards the Roman gallery.

Short Workshop Walk, Draw, Stitch Cas Holmes at Surrey Wildlife Trust

The new centre for learning at surreywildlife.org was amazing. It is not open to the general public other than for educational workshops. Spent a few hours on Saturday with a group of enthusiastic students investigating the local landscape creating Stitch-Sketch drawing for folding and scroll books
