New Norcia - The Only Monastic Town In Australia
New Norcia is a town in Western Australia, 132 km (82 mi) north of Perth, along the Great Northern Highway. It is situated next to the banks of the Moore River, in the Shire of Victoria Plains.
New Norcia is the only monastic town in Australia.
On 1 March 1846, a Benedictine mission to the local native Aboriginals was started about 8 km (5.0 mi) to the north, led by the two Spanish Benedictines, Rosendo Salvado and Joseph Serra.
Within a year the mission was moved to where the town is today, and on 1 March 1847 the foundation stone of the monastery was laid.
The place was named New Norcia, after Norcia in Italy, the birthplace of St Benedict
The town of New Norcia has buildings in a Spanish style of architecture, along with some other historical sites. Among these are the two old boarding schools, St Ildephonsus' and St Gertrude's (both now used for accommodation and various social functions), the Abbey Church (containing the tomb of Rosendo Salvado), an old mill, a wine press, a hotel and the monastery itself.
The town has attracted interest and tourist visits for most of its existence.
Tours of the town are operated daily by the Friends of New Norcia, who also organise the accommodation in the various buildings including the monastery retreat.
The Benedictine monks continue to occupy the monastery and are involved with most of the enterprises in the town. The last Spanish Benedictine monk of New Norcia died on 18 January 2010, aged 99. He continued to prepare the bread for the monks and olive oil almost upon his death.
Today New Norcia is increasingly well respected in Australian culinary circles for its quality bakery (built in 1886) offering breads, nutcake and biscotti. Also maintaining olive oil production and locally made wines; port and ale can be purchased at the community or from special outlets.

VISITED HERE LAST WEEKEND AND MADE THIS MOVIE OF MY IMPRESSIONS. THE MONKS NEVER SEEM TO THROW ANYTHING OUT. THE PLACE IS A HISTORICAL TREASURE TROVE.
New Norcia is a town in Western Australia, 132 km (82 miles) north of Perth, along the Great Northern Highway. It is situated next to the banks of the Moore River, in the Shire of Victoria Plains.
New Norcia is the only monastic town in Australia. A ground station for the European Space Agency is located 8 km south of the town [1].
The Abbey Church which contains the tomb of Dom Rosendo SalvadoOn 1 March 1846, a Benedictine mission to the local aborigines was started about 8 km to the north, led by the two Spanish Benedictines, Rosendo Salvado and Joseph Serra. Within a year the mission was moved to where the town is today, and on 1 March 1847 the foundation stone of the monastery was laid. These monks spend their lives praying for Ireland's priests
Prayer, reparation, and praising God are the focus of a new Benedictine priory in Ireland, which focuses especially on reparation for the sins of priests.
“It was never our predetermined plan to come to Ireland,” Silverstream Priory’s Father Benedict Andersen, O.S.B., told CNA. “But we believe that, through circumstances that we could never have foreseen, Divine Providence placed us here to play some sort of role, however modest, in the life of the Irish Church.”
Silverstream Priory is the home of the Benedictine Monks of Perpetual Adoration of the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar.
The priory is a former residence of the Visitation Sisters in Stamullen, a village about 22 miles north of Dublin. It is believed to be the first monastery established in Ireland’s County Meath since King Henry VIII suppressed them.
“The Reformation, which was ruthlessly enforced in Ireland, dealt a near fatal blow to the monastic life, and it almost seems as if certain contemporary forces and trends are conspiring to finish it off completely,” said Father Benedict, who hails from Colorado.
There are many Americans at the priory. The prior, Dom Mark Daniel Kirby, is from Connecticut. Tulsa, Okla. native Dom Elijah Carroll also comes from the U.S. The priory has a postulant from Toledo, Ohio and a priest from the Archdiocese of St. Louis. One member is from County Meath, while one novice is from Australia and another from Denmark.
According to Father Benedict, one of the glories of the Benedictine order is that their sole reason for existence is “the lifelong search for God in separation from the world, and the perpetual praise of God in the Sacred Liturgy.”
The monk himself was baptized Catholic as an infant in 1980. Both his parents came from very large Catholic families, but for various reasons they became estranged from the Church and began practicing an Evangelical, charismatic form of Christianity.
In his own words, Father Benedict “rebelled” against this upbringing by seeking the depths of ancient Christianity. He became an Orthodox Christian for his twenties and studied at an Orthodox seminary. He returned to full communion with the Church “as a positive desire to be in full communion with the principal Petrine See, ‘Old Rome’ (as the Orthodox call it), the Church of my baptism.”
Dom Kirby and Father Benedict moved to Ireland in 2012 as the only members of their Benedictine community, which began in Tulsa, Okla.
“I must say that we have been received very well, from the very beginning until now,” Father Benedict said. “While there are of course major differences, I feel very much at home.”
In Father Benedict’s eyes, contemporary Irish culture is heavily Americanized, “sometimes for good but increasingly, I’m afraid, for the worst.”
The monk sees an “immense cultural shift” following the unprecedented success of the Irish economy in the 1990s. He suggested this success “had the downside of greatly accelerating the decay of Irish Catholic faith and practice since the Second Vatican Council.”
The “horrors” of Ireland’s sexual abuse scandals by clergy gave an “incalculable blow” to the Church’s credibility, he added.
“This island was once dotted from east to west, north to south, with monasteries. The heartbeat of the Irish people was the heartbeat of the monastic round of prayer,” Father Benedict said.
Pope Benedict XVI’s 2010 Letter to the Catholics in Ireland noted the role of monasteries in promoting Eucharistic Adoration and their ability to revitalize priestly life through retreats.

We left Perth and headed north to a small country town called Dandaragan. They had a lovely transit park in town which we set up at. After a good few weeks of the city life and hustle and bustle, we were craving some down time to catch up a load of jobs. Mainly some routine repairs and servicing to the navara and we also needed to do some serious catch ups with our blogs and video editing.
We spent a good couple of days camped up here on Dandaragan and loved it. There was a large grassy oval, playground, tennis courts, basketball hoops, toilets & showers, 240v powered sites and fresh water. All rested, recharged and on top of things we piled in the car and headed out to Lancelin for a day trip.
Lancelin Sand Dunes
Straight into Lancelin and off to the popular sand dunes we went. We packed our skim board and some candle wax????, so off in search for a steep dune to give it a crack. Unfortunately our wooden skim board was no good. We still had fun running up and down the dunes though. We drove around them for a bit, quite impressive with how much of an area they cover. Then driving around the town for a look, before heading up to Wedge Island.
Wedge island was cool, a nice drive out to see the quirky shack settlement. We drove onto the beach and instantly saw 2 dolphins chasing fish in the shallows. They were having a ball! Although the beach was covered in seaweed, like most of the beaches around here, it still looked nice.
Happy with our outing we headed back to Dandaragan to relax. Amz decided to pop her head into the info centre and had a good chat with the lovely ladies in there. They told us about all the surrounding things we could see around the area. There was one place that caught our attention purely out of curiosity - New Norcia.

The following day, we drove through Moora and down to New Norcia. We had learnt it was the only Monastic town in Australia. We’re not religious by any means, but we were curious and decided to do a town tour and learn about the history of this community of monks. The town tour was $15pp and our guide was great and informative. Seeing the structures and architecture here was the main highlight, you rarely see some of this stuff in Australia.
After our tour we were hungry and stopped into the roadhouse to grab some snacks. Surprisingly good food and the lovey lady at the roadhouse gave us some fresh bread for free, as it was the end of the day - winning!

Holy Cross Monastery Vlog
This is a video montage of the place which I was on retreat this past week. Slightly different than my other videos. It is right before the beginning of my second year of seminary and I wanted to take a retreat. So, a buddy and I took a road trip up to Rhode Island for some beach time, then enjoyed a retreat at Holy Cross Monastery. This Benedictine community is a monastic community of The Episcopal Church in the Anglican Communion. Located in West Park. Thank you to the monks of Holy Cross for providing such a peaceful, prayerful, and wonderful space to enter deep prayer, and sharing your space with pilgrims like myself.
