Things to Do: Kyoto Railway Museum [4K]
If there’s one thing Japan is praised for the world over, it’s the punctuality, wide coverage, and convenience of its railway system. Here in Kyoto you’ll surely make use of the shinkansen bullet train when you arrive or leave, and the local lines that crisscross the city for sightseeing… But if you want to do more than just ride, you can always visit the Kyoto Railway Museum! Opened in 2016, this shiny new museum is a sprawling space that covers everything about trains from their construction and operation to their history and services. Interactive in many ways, this museum has lots of areas where guests can touch and operate exhibits in a way that makes things both educational and fun, making it great for visitors traveling with families. The real trains are hard to overlook, but be sure not to miss the train conductor simulators and the country’s largest train diorama!

This museum offers a very attractive permanent exhibition about the history of Kyoto, although its floor space is relatively small, and information in English is limited, making it difficult to fully appreciate without Japanese reading skills. In addition, special exhibitions are held periodically.

SanJuSanGendo Temple (三十三間堂), Kyoto, Japan
SanJuSanGendo (literally means a hall with 33 bays) Temple is an old temple in Eastern Kyoto city, many of the temple's objects are designated as National Treasures by the Japanese Government. This temple is close to the Kyoto Tower and the JR Kyoto Station.
The official name of SanJuSanGendo (三十三間堂) is Rengeo-in temple. It was established by the powerful warrior-politician Taira-no-Kiyomori in 1164. The original temple building was lost in a fire, but the building (Main Hall or the Hondo) was reconstructed in 1266. That structure has remained unchanged for 700 years since then with four great renovations during that period. The long temple hall, Hondo, which is about 120 meters long, is made in the Wayo (Japanese) style architecture. As there are 33 spaces between the columns (bays), it came to be known as the hall with 33 bays.
The Main Hall is really an architectural marvel as it was built to withstand earthquakes, which Japan is frequently prone for.
The main worshiped deities are located inside the main hall where cameras are not allowed. The principal images of SanJuSanGendo are the 1001 statues of the Buddhist diety, Juichimen-senju sengen kanzeon, or the Thousand Armed Kannon. There are one thousand standing statues of Kannon (Important Cultural Properties of Japan) and one gigantic seated statue (National Treasure), placed at the center of the standing statues. The statues are made of Japanese cypress. Among the standing statues, 124 were made in the 12th century when this temple was founded, and the remaining 876 were made in the 13th century when the temple was renovated.
The statues and the statues other deities are really a great sight and spellbinding to see. I hope you get a chance to go to the temple and see these statues. And yes, the Kyoto National Museum is right across this temple, so you can visit the Museum too.
Enjoy!!!

Kyoto Festival: Jidai Matsuri [4K]
For more information, check out the Jidai Matsuri page on our website:
Considered to be one of the top three festivals in all of Kyoto despite its status as a relatively new tradition, Heian Shrine's Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages) is held on October 22nd from noon each year.
The festival is primarily composed of a two kilometer, five hour long procession of countless volunteers dressed in historical garb representing Japanese cultural history from the Meiji era all the way back to the Enryaku era in the 780’s. Painstakingly recreated and researched, going so far as to even make and dye the fabric using the same techniques as they used a thousand years ago, the procession is akin to watching a living history museum march by. Not only do famous historical figures and princesses make appearance, but warriors, priests, politicians, merchants, and commoners are all represented. With that many characters, the Jidai Matsuri gives a very comprehensive look in to the clothing and appearance of Japanese past.
