I've been wanting to check out the libraries in Seoul for a while now. I couldn't find anyone who wanted to visit every library on their weekend so I created this video. I, personal, find that much information for foreigners in Korea is severely lacking, so I'm trying to give value with these videos. I feel l can give better information with this platform.

Antique books on old Korea by western writers displayed in National Library of Korea

A much wider range of perception on old Korea is now available to the public... with some 300 books newly donated to the National Library of Korea.
This donation is especially significant as we get to see 19th century, early 20th century Korea through the eyes of women writers from the West.

This is an excerpt from the book Korea and Her Neighbours,... describing the beautiful scenery of Mount Kumgang,... written by British geographer Isabella Bird Bishop in 1897.
It's one of the many books on Korea written by Westerners that are currently on display as part of a special exhibition at the National Library of Korea.
Most of the books were written by women who visited the country from 1883 to the mid-1900s for missionary work, travel and other reasons.

The books were donated by Professor Song Young-dahl, who for the past 30 years... has been collecting books and other documents on Korea by foreign authors.
His collection includes photos, poems, novels and records that show Westerners' perceptions of a country in transition at the end of the Joseon Dynasty.

The library held an opening on Monday to launch the exhibit and honor Professor Song and the writers.
Professor Song himself could not attend, as he is in the states, but his family and a grandson of Lillias Horton Underwood were there.
Lillias Underwood was a royal adviser, teacher and an author, who's books about her life in Korea are included in the collection.

I think it's natural when you live your whole adult life,... you learn to love the country and the people. It's all you know. But what is impressive is that there is a recognition now in Korea about the contribution of Western women. I am very pleased to see that.

Just a fraction of Professor Song's books will be on display at the National Library of Korea's exhibition hall from Tuesday until June 5th. The rest of the collection is housed in a separate room, where visitors can sign up to read them.

The National Library of Korea is located in Seoul, South Korea and was established in 1945. It houses over 10 million volumes, including over 1,134,000 foreign books and some of the National Treasures of South Korea.
It was relocated within Seoul, from Sogong-dong, Jung-gu to Namsan-dong in 1974, and again to the present location at Banpo-dong, Seocho-gu, in 1988. It was transferred from the Ministry of Education to the Ministry of Culture in 1991.

So, what is this new cultural landmark that has been so popular with the masses?

Well, it's definitely not what most people have in mind when they think of cultural landmarks. And in this age of high-tech digital media, it's a facility that definitely has a modern edge.



The old adage never judge a book by its cover, definitely applies to this brand new building in the city of Sejong.
What looks to be an open book -- or a row of books stacked on a shelf -- is actually the National Library of Sejong.




I've brought a lot of friends here.


And why did you bring them here?


Because the facilities and the view are excellent

The new facility was created to provide public servants who have recently moved to the area as part of a government relocation plan... with a central location for policy data.
However, it is easy to see that there are more local residents and visitors here than government workers, which is in part because of the lack of other cultural facilities in the fast developing city and the brand new books that are available.
As a result, 13 percent of the library's books are checked out on a regular basis, an abnormally high rate.
The high quality of the interior has also made it a popular spot for local residents to gather, in addition to attracting visitors.


There are so many books available, and the digital reference room and other resources are so modern, it makes it a great atmosphere for studying or reading.

Another feature that makes the library so popular is the beautiful sky lounge on the fourth floor.
Since opening in December, the library has also been extremely popular as a benchmark, which is evidenced by the number of tours taken by people who work at other libraries.


There have been many visitors from many different places. Of course, there have been visits from people who work at other public libraries and university libraries, and the number of tour requests from organizers who are planning to open similar kinds of facilities

has been overwhelming.

This brand new cultural oasis in the administrative city of Sejong is open from nine to six, with plans to extend hours until 9 p.m. currently in the works.

We used to visit in this library because we wanted to help our son get familiar on spending time with books. As we all know reading is a great help for us to gain knowledge and understand almost everything in this world. History of the National Museum of Korea

On October 28, 2005, the NMK reopened in its new permanent home in Yongsan, on a site of 307,227 m² (building area: 45,438 m²). Yongsan, the geographic heart of Seoul, is backed by the expansive Mt. Namsan and fronted by the Hangang. Yongsan is also the true cultural center of Seoul, sitting just south of the five palaces of the Joseon Dynasty and the War Memorial, and north of the National Library and the Seoul Arts Center.
The NMK, boasting more extensive and convenient facilities than its predecessors, attracted more than 100,000 visitors in its first three days, reaching one million in attendance after 44 days, and ten million in about three and a half years. In 2009, the NMK attracted 2,730,204 visitors, which ranked as the highest attendance figure in Asia and 10th worldwide (according to the Art Newspaper).

Reborn as a cultural complex that all Koreans can enjoy, the NMK has updated its mission to not only to preserve and display relics, but also to host a variety of programs and cultural events in conjunction with the Children's Museum and permanent exhibitions. Beginning in 2008, the NMK offered free admission to all of its permanent exhibits, thereby enhancing the popularity of the museum and altering the perception that museums are for one-time visits only.

The NMK also reinforced its numerous exchange programs with overseas museums, holding special internationally themed exhibitions, such as The Glory of Persia (2008), Egypt, the Great Civilization: Pharaohs and Mummies (2009), Korean Museums: 100 Years in Remembrance (a 100th anniversary celebration of Korean Museums) (2009), and Gods, Heroes and Mortals: Art and Life in Ancient Greece (2010).

Contemporary issue on reading habits in South Korea

2018 has been declared a year of books here in Korea.
However fewer and fewer people are sitting down with a good paperback in this age of smartphones and abundant online contents.
The government has been trying to reverse this trend with numerous initiatives... with little success.
Our Won Jung-hwan examines the changes in reading habits.

The season of reading has arrived, but according to statistics,... the number of people cozying up with a book in their hands is falling every year.
According to the Ministry of Culture's study on the nation's reading habits,… almost 4 out of 10 South Korean adults did not read a single book last year.
Compared to the results of the same study conducted in 2015, reading declined by 5-point-4 percentage points,… reaching the lowest mark since data started being collected in 1994.
Also, people read fewer books than in previous year,… with the average number of books read dropping from 9-point-1 to 8-point-3 for adults over a two year period.
And here are some of the reasons why people think the rate is gradually dropping.

Recently, I think reading books has taken a back seat due to various leisure activities and smartphones that are available for us.

Students are busy finding jobs and employees often have no room to read books for pleasure.

The Ministry has been pushing to increase the rate by expanding public libraries throughout the nation,… fostering an environment that allows people to easily access books.
In fact, the number of public libraries has been gradually increasing in the country, posting a rise of nearly 6.5 percent, from 2015 to 2017.
But ironically, the average number of adults who use public libraries per year is constantly decreasing,... hinting that more public libraries is not the solution to encourage further reading.

The gap in terms of knowledge is growing wider in the country, so the government should first focus on the concept of 'knowledge welfare'. Also, if public libraries expand their role to serve as multi-cultural complex, it will increase the chances of more people visiting and reading more books.

The government last year declared 2018 to be a year of books and set a goal of raising the percentage of the population that has read at least one book a year, to 70 percent.

Seoul Metropolitan Library inside Old City Hall in Seoul, South Korea

The Old Seoul City Hall, now the Seoul Metropolitan Library, is a Renaissance style building that served as the city hall of Seoul from 1945 until 2008. After over four years of construction, the new city hall building opened on August 27, 2012.

SEOUL BOOK BOGO in 360 | Seoul, South Korea

Visited the #SeoulBookBogo which has gotten famous due to the K-Drama #HotelDelLuna which featured this place and its #BookTunnel that is curved and filled with books. This place is a book repository or storage that people use as a library.

While this place sells books, people are allowed to freely sit and read them. There is even a cafe housed here and an area where there are flea market booths that sell various products and a stage where meet-and-greets and performances are held.

Whereas many foreigners, such as I, only come here for photos and videos. :D

Inside Korea's Presitigious University ► Tour of Yonsei

Today we get a walking tour of Yonsei University from graduate Seungho Jeong. He shows us the new campus as well as the original campus, which was once a war zone during the Korean War. We filmed on a Saturday when Yonsei was on summer vacation, so some buildings were closed. On the bright side, the walk was peaceful since less people were out and about :) Viewers requested a Korean college tour. Hope you found this helpful.
