Kraków has traditionally been one of the leading centres of Polish scientific, cultural and artistic life. As the former national capital with a history encompassing more than a thousand years, the city remains the spiritual heart of Poland. It is a major attraction for local and international tourists, attracting seven million visitors annually. Famous landmarks include the Main Market Square with St. Mary's Basilica and the Sukiennice Cloth Hall, the Wawel Castle, the National Art Museum, the Zygmunt Bell at the Wawel Cathedral, and the medieval St Florian's Gate with the Barbican along the Royal Coronation Route. In 1978 Kraków's historic centre, which includes the Old Town, Kazimierz and the Wawel Castle was included in the list of World Heritage Sites.
Kraków is considered by many to be the cultural capital of Poland. It was named the European Capital of Culture for the year 2000 by the European Union. Kraków has 28 museums and public art galleries. Among them are the main branch of Poland's National Museum and the Czartoryski Museum, the latter featuring works by Leonardo and Rembrandt. The city has several famous theaters, including: National Stary Theatre, a.k.a. The Old Theatre, Juliusz Słowacki Theatre, Bagatela Theatre, The Ludowy Theatre, and Groteska Theatre of Puppetry, as well as Opera Krakowska and Kraków Operetta.

From Wikipedia
Kraków Old Town is the historic central district of Kraków, Poland.[1] It is one of the most famous old districts in Poland today and was the center of Poland's political life from 1038 until King Sigismund III Vasa relocated his court to Warsaw in 1596.
The entire medieval old town is among the first sites chosen for the UNESCO's original World Heritage List, inscribed as Cracow's Historic Centre.[2][3] The old town is also one of Poland's official national Historic Monuments (Pomnik historii) chosen in the first round, as designated September 16, 1994, and tracked by the National Heritage Board of Poland.
The Old Town is known in Polish as Stare Miasto. It is part of the city's first administrative district which is also named Stare Miasto, although it covers a wider area than the Old Town itself.
Medieval Kraków was surrounded by a 1.9 mile (3 km) defensive wall complete with 46 towers and seven main entrances leading through them. The fortifications around the Old Town were erected over the course of two centuries.[4] The current architectural plan of Stare Miasto – the 13th-century merchants' town – was drawn up in 1257 after the destruction of the city during the Tatar invasions of 1241 followed by raids of 1259 and repelled in 1287.[4] The district features the centrally located Rynek Główny, or Main Square, the largest medieval town square of any European city.[5] There is a number of historic landmarks in its vicinity, such as St. Mary's Basilica (Kościół Mariacki), Church of St. Wojciech (St. Adalbert's), Church of St. Barbara, as well as other national treasures. At the center of the plaza, surrounded by kamienice (row houses) and noble residences, stands the Renaissance cloth hall Sukiennice (currently housing gift shops, restaurants and merchant stalls) with the National Gallery of Art upstairs. It is flanked by the Town Hall Tower (Wieża ratuszowa).
The whole district is bisected by the Royal Road, the coronation route traversed by the Kings of Poland. The Route begins at St. Florian's Church outside the northern flank of the old city walls in the medieval suburb of Kleparz; passes the Barbican of Kraków (Barbakan) built in 1499, and enters Stare Miasto through the Florian Gate. It leads down Floriańska Street through the Main Square, and up Grodzka to Wawel, the former seat of Polish royalty overlooking the Vistula river.

Obwarzanki krakowskie salesman in Kraków Old Town
In the 19th century most of the Old Town fortifications were demolished.[4] The moat encircling the walls was filled in and turned into a green belt known as Planty Park.
The first mention of Kraków dates back to the second half of the 9th century. By the end of 10th century the city was incorporated into the Polish state under the rule of Piast dynasty. The episcopal bishopric was awarded to Kraków in 1000 and around that time, it became the residence of Polish kings for centuries to come. The history of the old city of Kraków revolves mainly around its Old Town District of today. Here, the regalia were stored and, back in early Middle Ages, a cathedral school was erected.
Around 700 A.D., local tribes initiated the process of forming the Vistulan State by uniting with each other. Numerous remains of a once massive earth embankment encircling Wawel Hill survived till this day. A chest with 4,200 iron axes weighing about 4 tons was found in a basement of a house at Kanoniczna 19 street. These axes were commonly known under the name of płacidłos which is a word derived from the Polish verb płacić – to pay. As it happens the axes were a main legal tender in the neighboring Great Moravian State. The value of the treasure chest is the greatest to be discovered thus far and testifies to Kraków's significant wealth and power in the region. At Wawel's foot, in the place where now Kanoniczna, Grodzka and other neighboring streets are located, remains of a Vistulan settlement called Okół were found. This settlement, the beginnings of which can be dated at least back to the early 9th century, was surrounded by an enormous oak palisade and, in the place where now the Straszewska and St. Gertrude's streets run, by one of Vistula's arms. Near Main Market Square – specifically near Church of St. Wojciech and Church of St. Mary and Bracka street - another discovery was made. Found were the relics of craft workshops and of dwelling houses which were originally raised near Vistula.

Best Of Krakow
This medieval city looks like it has fallen straight out of a fairytale book, with its bustling market square, spiralling gothic towers, castles and legends about dragons. Explore the narrow backstreets, hidden courtyards and the network of underground cellars and tunnels. Krakow is known as the cultural capital of Poland through its love of music, poetry and theatre. After years of occupation and struggle, Krakow has emerged a proud city with a strong sense of identity, yet has still maintained its artistic and fun-loving soul.

POLAND TRAVELOGUE 1933 KRAKOW, KATOWICE, GDANSK, WARSAW 56554
This 1933 short film, “A Flying Visit to Poland,” produced by the Gdynia-America Line, gives an overview of visiting Poland, touching on many of Poland’s places of interest. The film begins in Krakow (or Kracow) with ancient city’s highlights: the Trumpeter of Krakow (01:00); St. Mary’s Church (01:17); the Wawel, a national shrine also referred to as Poland’s tower of London (01:23); the old cobbled streets of Krakow (01:27); the Barbican, Krakow’s old circular fort (01:34); and an ancient chapel carved out of salt at the entrance of the Wieliczka salt mines (1:40). The next stop on the tour is Katowice (02:05), an industrial city dubbed the Pittsburg of Poland. With its massive iron and steel industry (02:10), it provides the steel needed to build Poland’s own railroad equipment and locomotives (02:25), as well as Poland’s own bridges (02:33). Coal is another major resource harvested from Katowice and the larger Silesian province (02:40). Lumber is another major resource of Poland, and lumberjacks chop trees down (03:12) and then floated downriver (03:29) to Gdansk and Gdynia for export; Poland is also an oil producer (03:40). The film then turns to coastal city of Gdynia (03:59). The city quickly grew into a modern city with its massive harbor (04:14). The film’s next stop is Czestochowa (04:35), home to the famous Jasna Gora monastery and its international religious procession celebrating the feast day of Our Lady of Czestochowa (04:41). Religious processions occur all over, such as in Lowicz, complete with the national costumes of Poland (05:02). The film then looks at rural society (05:28), dominated by agriculture. Farmers grow and harvest a number of different crops and, accordingly, celebrate the Harvest Festival (05:48). Part of that entails presenting part of the harvest to President Ignacy Moscicki (05:55). The film then shows a traditional wedding ceremony with Polish customs (06:10), followed by traditional Polish dancing (06:55). The viewer is then taken to Warsaw (07:28), home to the Opera House in Theatre Square (07:44), the Prince Poniatowski Bridge (08:00), Czapski Palace featuring the statue of Prince Joseph Poniatowski (08:05), the building of the Ministry of Industry (08:12), the modern architecture of the Polish Printing Office (08:19), the Aviator’s Monument (08:26), and the birthplace of Frederic Chopan (08:37). Next is a trip to Starego Miasta, Warsaw’s medieval marketplace, for a visit to Fukier, Europe’s oldest wine shop and one of the most famous (08:45). Fukier is home to thousands of bottles of wine and vintages that are several centuries old. Next is a stop at the celebrations of the 250th Anniversary of John Sobieski’s victory over the Ottomans at the 1683 Battle of Vienna (09:27), complete with presentations of Poland’s army. Marshal Jozef Pilsudski presides over the festivities (09:54), before returning to Belveder Palace (10:06) where Pilsudski is greeted by children who celebrate his contribution to the creation of modern Poland.

(The Battle of Grunwald, First Battle of Tannenberg or Battle of Žalgiris, was fought on 15 July 1410 during the Polish–Lithuanian–Teutonic War. The alliance of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, led respectively by King Władysław II Jagiełło (Jogaila) and Grand Duke Vytautas, decisively defeated the German–Prussian Teutonic Knights, led by Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen.)
Jan Adam Maklakiewicz was born 24 November 1899 in Chojnaty (by Skierniewice) to a family of polish musicians, died 7 February 1954 in Warsaw. Composer, teacher, choral conductor, organist and music journalist. Son of the organist in Mszczonów, Jan Maklakiewicz (1874–1955) and Rozalia née Izbicka.
In the years 1927–29 he taught theory subjects and conducted the choir at the H. Kijeńska-Dobkiewiczowa Conservatory in Łódź; in the years 1928–32 he was professor of harmony at the conservatory in Warsaw. From January 1932 till June 1935 Maklakiewicz was organist and leader of the choir in the Holy Cross Church in Warsaw, which in this time became one of the best church choirs in Poland. In the ‘30s he also led the choir of the Union of Municipal Gas Workers in Warsaw - “Znicz”, the choir and orchestra of the munitions factory at Bema Fort (now the Bemowo district of town), the traders’ youth choir and the Warsaw University Academic circle choir “Lira”.
Jan Adam Maklakiewicz led a very active life as a journalist; in the years 1930-1937 he was music correspondent for the “Kurier Poranny”. In 1934, together with J. Niezgoda, Secretary General of the Federation of Polish Associations of Singing and Music, and F. Grąbczewski, bookstore owner and music publisher in Warsaw, he founded the magazine Choir, devoted to choral music and singing groups, and amateur orchestras, recognized in 1935 as an official organ of the association; at the beginning he edited the journal himself, then (from August 1935 to November 1936) with J. Niezgoda. In the years 1926 to 1939 he worked with the Polish Theatre in Warsaw, and after the war with the Słowacki Theatre and the Old Theatre in Krakow and the National Theatre, Chamber Theatre and the “Syrena” Theatres in Warsaw; from 1937, he collaborated with Polish Radio.
During World War II, the composer worked from October 1939 as a pianist at the Café Club in Warsaw and then, after being introduced by a known actor and director, E. Chaberski, at the Znachor cafe, which was a meeting place for activists. From March 1941 to the end of the war he hid in Chojnaty, where he privately taught harmony and piano.
From November 1945 to July 1947 Maklakiewicz was director of the State Philharmonic in Krakow (joined with the opera in May 1946). In the years 1947–48 he was director of the Warsaw Philharmonic; he led it in reviving its activities, organising the symphony orchestra and choir.

Searching for the Warsaw Ghetto - Poland 4K Travel Channel
No major city in Europe suffered more under the Nazi terror regime than Warsaw. After the withdrawal of German troops, the city was largely destroyed and in most parts practically uninhabitable. All the more remarkable is the considerable achievement the Poles have made in rebuilding the city. Today you see modern urban features in which international star architects like Norman Foster and Daniel Libeskind have played a part. However, the first steps towards reconstruction were taken immediately after the war and aimed at the construction of the old town true to the original.
Later one rebuilt the streets Miodowa, Diuga, and Senatorskaand restored innumerable palaces.
A central topic in Warsaw's war history is the Warsaw Ghetto, into which hundreds of thousands of people were crammed and later deported to concentration camps. The Pawiak prison plays a particular role. 37000 people were murdered and 60000 were transferred to concentration camps from there. Today it is a museum. Another important museum is the Museum of the History of Polish Jews.
But we want to see the quarters and buildings of the Warsaw Ghetto and start our search. We are aware that almost everything has been destroyed after the war and many prefabricated buildings stand on the sites today.
We take the Metro to the station Metro Ratusz Arsenał. It was the location of the main synagogue from Warsaw until it was blown up.
But there is no trace of the synagogue anymore. There is supposed to be a plaque (Warsaw Ghetto boundary marker) somewhere, but we didn't come for commemorative plaques. Where once stood the synagogue is the Blue Tower Plaza, an office complex with the logo of the insurance company MetLife at the top today.
On the opposite side of the street is the City Hall of Warsaw with the seat of the Lord Mayor. The museum Kolekcji is in the round extension of the former stock exchange in this at the left end of the complex, in Jana Pawła II. It houses the most important collection of European art in Warsaw, dedicated to Pope John II. 450 exhibits are donations of Zbigniew and Janina Porczyński.
We turn off in into the Senatorska. Here is the Teatr Wielki Opera Narodowa, the national theater, and the national opera.
