Το Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας Κρήτης του Πανεπιστημίου Κρήτης ιδρύθηκε το 1980 και από το 2007 στεγάζεται στο κτίριο της παλιάς Ηλεκτρικής στην παραλιακή του Ηρακλείου, κοντά στην πύλη Δερματά. Είναι από τα σπουδαιότερα μουσεία φυσικής ιστορίας της Ελλάδας και δέχεται χιλιάδες επισκέπτες κάθε χρόνο. Στους εκθεσιακούς του χώρους, επιφανείας 3.500 τ.μ., αναδεικνύεται με τρόπο εντυπωσιακό και καινοτόμο, το φυσικό περιβάλλον της ανατολικής Μεσογείου με έμφαση στην Ελλάδα και κυρίως στην Κρήτη.Περιλαμβάνει τα τμήματα: Ζωολογικό, Βοτανικό, Παλαιοντολογικό – Γεωλογικό και Ορυκτολογικό. Πιο συγκεκριμένα στην Έκθεση του Μουσείου Φυσικής Ιστορίας Κρήτης μπορεί κανείς να δει τα Μεγάλα Διοράματα (Αναπαραστάσεις ταριχευμένων ζώων στο αληθινό τους περιβάλλον), το Δεινοθήριο (ένα γιγάντιο ζώο που έζησε στην Κρήτη κι έχει ανακατασκευαστεί από τους επιστήμονες), το Ζωντανό Μουσείο (έκθεση ζωντανών ερπετών και αμφιβίων), τη Σεισμική Τράπεζα, τον Ερευνότοπο (μικρογραφία οικοσυστημάτων της Μεσογείου για παιδιά), έκθεση απολιθωμάτων ζώων που έχουν εξαφανιστεί αλλά και περιοδικές εκθέσεις (όπως εκθέσεις δεινοσαύρων)
The Natural History Museum of Crete is housed in the renovated former premises of the Heraklion Public Power Corporation, on Dermatas’ Bay. With an area of 3,500 m2, it is the largest exhibition of its kind in the Mediterranean, showcasing the natural environment of Crete and the wider Mediterranean area in an innovative, original way. Visitors have the opportunity to explore Cretan ecosystems alongside their equivalents in mainland Greece and elsewhere in the Mediterranean via dioramas, i.e. full-scale models of natural landscapes. Other areas are dedicated to exhibits such as the Giant Deinotherium, the largest prehistoric animal ever to live on Crete.

Crete | The Museum of Nikos Kazantzakis in Heraklion Region. Nikos Kazantzakis was a leading novelist of 20th century Greece. And if that doesn't ring a bell, he's the one who wrote the original 'Zorba the Greek,' which was turned into a successful film and started the syrtaki dance craze in the 1960s.
Kazantzakis was a Cretan, which means he has his own museum about 20 kilometres south of Heraklion. You can drive or take a bus from the city, and you'll be there in about half an hour. Follow the brown sign to the museum.

Crete | Heraklion Historical Museum. The Crete Historical Museum at Heraklion carries on where the Archaeological Collective leaves off -- at the end of the classic period. Here you can view Cretan history through Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman Turkish and modern times.
Byzantine icons and other early Christian art take pride of the place, plus wood carvings and a good collection of 17th century pottery.
The modern section features relics from a series of revolts that shook Crete periodically, including weapons and flags. There's a room dedicated to the 20th century Cretan novelist Nikos Kazantzakis, known to the world as the creator of the character Zorba the Greek.
The Archaeological Collection Archanes and the Historical Museum are best visited in sequence, to give you the uninterrupted panorama of 8,000 years.
