SUMMARY
=======
Memphis is located along the Mississippi River in southwestern Tennessee. The estimated city population in 2017 was 652,236, with a 2017 metropolitan population of 1,348,260 including adjacent suburbs and counties as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau. The city is considered the anchor of West Tennessee and the greater Mid-South region, which includes portions of neighboring Arkansas and Mississippi. Memphis is the seat of Shelby County, the most populous county in Tennessee. As one of the most historic and cultural cities of the southern United States, the city features a wide variety of landscapes and distinct neighborhoods.
The land of present day Memphis was first discovered by Spanish conquistador Hernando DeSoto in 1541 with his expedition into the New World. The high bluffs protecting the location from the waters of the Mississippi would then be contested between the Spanish, French, and the English as Memphis took shape. Modern Memphis was founded in 1819 by three prominent Americans: John Overton, James Winchester, and future president Andrew Jackson.Memphis grew into one of the largest cities of the Antebellum South as a market for agricultural goods, natural resources like lumber, and the American slave trade. After the American Civil War and the end of slavery, the city experienced even faster growth into the 20th century as it became among the largest world markets for cotton and lumber.
Home to Tennessee's largest African-American population, Memphis played a prominent role in the American civil rights movement and was the site of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s 1968 assassination. The city now hosts the National Civil Rights Museum—a Smithsonian affiliate institution. Since the civil rights era, Memphis has grown to become one of the nation's leading commercial centers in transportation and logistics. The city's largest employer is the multinational courier corporation FedEx, which maintains its global air hub at Memphis International Airport, making it the second-busiest cargo airport in the world.
Today, Memphis is a regional center for commerce, education, media, art, and entertainment. The city has long had a prominent music scene, with historic blues clubs on Beale Street originating the unique Memphis blues sound during early 20th century. The city's music has continued to be shaped by a multi-cultural mix of influences across the blues, country, rock n' roll, soul, and hip-hop genres. Memphis barbecue has achieved international prominence, and the city hosts the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, which attracts over 100,000 visitors to the city annually.
Flipside Memphis - Memphis Roller Derby
The swish of skates, the zooming bodies, the violent collisions: the sport of roller derby has veered in and out of American culture for more than 80 years. After drawing tens of thousands to Madison Square Garden and television audiences in the millions in the 1970s, the sport dwindled to near-invisibility during the 1990s. But in 2000, a new incarnation of the sport arose out of Austin, Texas. The new roller derby was not the creation of a cynical sports promoter; it was a grassroots phenomenon, self-organized by the same women who would put their bodies on the line in pursuit of victory. They embraced the sports campy image, violent tendencies, and raucous soundtrack to create something new and undeniably exciting.
The Memphis Roller Derby started in early 2006. The first year, four teams competed for local bragging rights as the new generation of women honed their skating skills. Soon after, the travel team, the Memphis Hustlin Rollers, started racking up an impressive series of victories over newly formed regional rivals, culminating in two straight Tennessee state championships, an undefeated 2008 season, and earning MRDs accreditation with the Womans Flat Track Derby Association.
But beyond the flashing skates, fishnet hose, and and war paint, roller derby is a real sport played by real women who display real athleticism. In their everyday lives, these derby girls are students, mothers, professionals, and citizens. But on the weekends, they lace up their skates, empowered and united by their common need for speed.

Fresh out of a stint in prison, Rose-Lynn is a single mom with an ankle monitor, a curfew, and a concerned mother (Julie Walters), who wants her to focus more on her two children and less on her music. But when Rose- Lynn tries to hold down a housekeeping job, her boss (Sophie Okonedo) hears her singing and becomes an unlikely supporter, intent on getting her to Nashville despite the long odds. Caught between hope and responsibility, Rose-Lynn must find her place without abandoning her raw talent and grand ambitions.

SUMMARY
=======
Hip hop music, also called hip-hop or rap music, is a music genre developed in the United States by inner-city African Americans and Latino Americans in the Bronx borough of New York City in the 1970s. It consists of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching with turntables, break dancing, and graffiti writing. Other elements include sampling beats or bass lines from records (or synthesized beats and sounds), and rhythmic beatboxing. While often used to refer solely to rapping, hip hop more properly denotes the practice of the entire subculture. The term hip hop music is sometimes used synonymously with the term rap music, though rapping is not a required component of hip hop music; the genre may also incorporate other elements of hip hop culture, including DJing, turntablism, scratching, beatboxing, and instrumental tracks.
