Indians, Corn, and the American West: Maynard Dixon’s New Deal Mural for the Dept. of the Interior
Erika Doss discusses the complexities surrounding government-funded art projects during the 1930s and how American Artist Maynard Dixon negotiated with New Deal tastemakers in his depiction of modern American Indians and the American West. In 1937, the Treasury Department’s Section of Painting and Sculpture, a New Deal arts program, commissioned a two-panel mural for the Bureau of Indian Affairs offices in the Main Interior Building. Dixon was asked to depict ‘themes taken from the activities’ of the BIA. Following the lecture, visitors are invited to view Dixon’s Indian and Soldier and Indian and Teacher murals in the Main Interior Building.
Erika Doss, Chair and Professor in the Department of American Studies at the University of Notre Dame, has authored publications including; Benton, Pollock, and the Politics of Modernism: From Regionalism to Abstract Expressionism (1991), Spirit Poles and Flying Pigs: Public Art and Cultural Democracy in American Communities (1995). Her latest work, Memorial Mania: Self, Nation, and the Culture of Commemoration in Contemporary America will be published by the University of Chicago Press in 2010.
US State Signs - My 2016 Roadtrip
Photos of U.S. state signs that I shot during my 32,000-mile, 8-month solo road trip around America in 2016. I visited 46 states during my journey, in which I became the first person (I believe) to visit all 16 extreme geographic compass points of the contiguous United States. The four states I didn’t visit on this trip were Alaska, Hawaii, Kentucky and Arkansas. Sorry, maybe next time!
I left the Pacific Northwest in May 2016 and returned in December. Along the way, I took a photo of every state sign as I crossed the border (light conditions permitting) – and while standing next to it, if I could pull off the road. For different reasons, I missed three state signs during my 8-month journey (Arizona, Maryland and Washington) but got the other 43.
Except for the last few states, these are shown in order of when I first crossed into the state. I decided to end this slide show in Florida and not replicate all the state signs at the end of my trip, while driving back to the Northwest. For more information about my journey, check out my travel website at ExtremeGeographer.com.
Teacher's refusal to identify herself to border patrol raises legal questions
Cell phone video of a confrontation at a border patrol checkpoint is stirring up new controversy in the immigration debate. A California teacher was detained after she refused to say if she was a U.S. citizen at a checkpoint in New Mexico about 35 miles from the border. The video has many wondering if she was within her rights or had an obligation to comply. Mireya Villarreal reports.

Heavy D & The Boyz - Black Coffee
From the 1994 Album: Nuttin' But Love...[Artist info below].....
Get Heavy D's Music:
&
Dwight Arrington Myers (May 24, 1967 -- November 8, 2011), better known as Heavy D, was, better known as Heavy D, is a Jamaican American actor, rapper, singer and former leader of Heavy D & the Boyz, a hip hop group which included G-Whiz (Glen Parrish), Trouble T. Roy (Troy Dixon), and Eddie F (born Edward Ferrell). The group maintained a sizable audience in the United States through most of the 1990s. He has recently ventured into reggae music and can now be described as a reggae fusion artist.
Myers was born on May 24, 1967 in Jamaica. His family moved to Mount Vernon, New York, when he was a young child.
Heavy D & the Boyz were the first group signed to Uptown Records; their debut, Living Large, was released in 1987. The album was a commercial success, though Big Tyme was a breakthrough that included four hits. Trouble T. Roy died at age 22 in a fall on July 15, 1990, in Indianapolis. Dixon's passing led to a tribute on the follow-up platinum album, Peaceful Journey. Pete Rock & CL Smooth created a tribute to Trouble T. Roy called They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.) which is regarded as a hip-hop classic.
Heavy D & the Boyz gained even more fame by singing the theme song for the television program In Living Color and also MADtv, and Heavy D performed the rap on Michael Jackson's hit single Jam. However, the group's next album, Blue Funk, was not marketed as well as their previous albums[citation needed], but is widely viewed as an underrated gem.[citation needed] Heavy D then began focusing on his acting, appearing in the television shows A Different World, Roc and Living Single before returning the music charts with Nuttin' But Love. After appearing in the off-Broadway play Riff Raff at Circle Repertory Company, Heavy D returned to recording with the hit Waterbed Hev.[1] In 2005, the Will Smith movie Hitch played the song Now That We Found Love during the ending scene where a wedding party does a line dance, and gave Heavy D & the Boyz a lot of exposure, sending many viewers to the web to find out more about the song and the group.
He then appeared in the film Life, before being in the cast of the television show Boston Public. In 2002, Heavy D had a supporting role as an FBI agent alongside Omar Epps in the movie adaptation of Dave Barry's novel Big Trouble. In 2003 he starred in the supporting cast for the sit-com The Tracy Morgan Show as Bernard. In 1997, Heavy D collaborated with B.B. King on his duets album Deuces Wild rapping in the song Keep It Coming. He also has a small role in the 1999 Oscar-nominated movie The Cider House Rules. In 2005, Heavy D appeared as Sid in the hit Fox drama Bones, as the owner and bartender at Wong Fu's. In 2006, he appeared in the motion picture, Step Up, as Omar. Heavy D also appeared as Bo-Kane in the 1995 film New Jersey Drive. Heavy D has now released a new reggae album via iTunes, called Vibes.
Heavy D was referred to in the song Juicy by the Notorious B.I.G. and in Da Girls They Love Me by underground rapper R.A. the Rugged Man. He also appears as the bouncer in the music video for One More Chance by Notorious B.I.G. In the song Choppa on Da Back Seat by Lil Wyte he says that I got Heavy D Tied up on my couch, Face down with a rifle wound bleeding out his mouth.
Heavy D also played a part in the film Big Trouble as an FBI agent.
Myers died on November 8, 2011 in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 44. He collapsed outside his Beverly Hills home and was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. It has been reported that his death was due to respiratory issues and that no foul play was involved.
Heavy D was last seen in public in the movie Tower Heist, which premiered only 4 days before his death.

Rob Prior started at a very, very young age. He had been trained to be an artist before he could walk. Coming from a family of artists, though none by profession, it was only natural that he would become one as well.
When Rob was about 10, he knew at that point that he wanted to be an artist. Then he developed these morbid thoughts of, “What if I lose my right hand and can’t draw?” I’d be screwed, I thought. So, he quit using his right hand and used his left hand. Training himself to do everything with his left as he did with his right.
Eventually, he began to use both hands. This came about when he had some math homework and a painting due at the same time. With a pencil in one hand, he did math homework, and with a brush in another, he painted. This was the start of painting with both hands!
A lot of what Rob Prior does is centered on pop-culture. His work has involved comic companies: Marvel, DC Comics and others and he has worked for Lucas Films. Rob has done a lot of different things. it’s cool to draw super heroes. When Rob got his first job drawing a super hero he worked on a comic with a famous penciler, Mike Grell. He was thrilled! It was like living a dream. He got to draw heroes and do all the things he used to dream of as a kid.
Rob Prior has worked on such a variety of projects over the years. Spawn the Impaler (Image Comics) and the Terminator series. Video games like Darkness, Ghostrider and The Hulk. Book covers for Random House—even sculpting and painting creatures for the last series of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Rob literally works with whatever he feels like picking up that day. He likes to mix everything. Rob starts almost everything traditionally in pencil form, then will lay down some paint, whether it be watercolor, gouache, oil paint, whatever, and then scan that and either finish it on the computer or print it from there and continue to work on it.
Traditionally, a big fan of Canson paper and gouache. Canson offers a wide variety of papers, gouache from Royal Talens for their consistency.

Southern hip hop, also known as Southern rap, is a blanket term for a subgenre of American hip hop music that emerged in the Southern United States, including New Orleans, Louisiana, Houston, Texas, Nashville, Tennessee, Atlanta, Georgia, Memphis, Tennessee, Charlotte, North Carolina, Hampton Roads/Richmond, Virginia and Miami, Florida. The music was a reaction to the 1980s flow of hip hop culture from New York City and California, and can be considered a third major American hip hop genre, after East Coast hip hop and West Coast hip hop. Many early Southern rap artists released their music independently or on mixtapes after encountering difficulty securing record-label contracts in the 1990s. Atlanta, Georgia, is a prominent city in the region's hip hop scene.
Christopher Brian Bridges (born September 11, 1977), better known by his stage name Ludacris, is an American rapper and actor. Along with his manager, Chaka Zulu, Ludacris is the co-founder of Disturbing tha Peace, an imprint distributed by Def Jam Recordings. Ludacris has won a Screen Actors Guild, Critic's Choice, MTV, and three Grammy Awards during his career. Along with fellow Atlantans Big Boi and Andre 3000 of OutKast, Ludacris was one of the first and most influential Dirty South artists to achieve mainstream success.
Disturbing tha Peace (DTP) is a record label founded by Christopher Ludacris Bridges, his manager Chaka Zulu and Zulu's brother Jeff Dixon. Today it operates as a subsidiary of Universal Music Group, and is distributed by The Island Def Jam Music Group.
Born in Champaign, Illinois, Ludacris moved to Atlanta, Georgia at age nine, where he began rapping. After a brief stint as a disc jockey, he released his debut album Back for the First Time in 2000, which contained the singles Southern Hospitality and What's Your Fantasy. In 2001, he released Word of Mouf, followed by Chicken-n-Beer in 2003. He took a more serious approach with his next three albums, The Red Light District (2004), Release Therapy (2006), and Theater of the Mind (2008). His latest record, Battle of the Sexes, was released in 2010.
By the 1990s, Atlanta, Georgia had become a controlling city in southern hip hop music. Hip hop groups such as OutKast and Goodie Mob played a huge part in helping the South become a center for hip hop music.[8] OutKast's Big Boi and Andre 3000 became the first southerners to record album sales like the powerhouse rappers on the East and West coasts. The most successful Southern labels came out of New Orleans during the mid-to-late 90's. The city had rooted its particular style in its very own Bounce music. This style was first introduced by way of the Triggerman song by New York rap group Showboyz in the late 1980s. Cash Money Records, No Limit Records, the now-defunct Big Boy records revolutionized financial structures for successful Southern rap labels. Their artists went on to sell millions of albums and have gained much respect in the hip-hop community. By the early 2000s, artists from all over the South had begun to emerge. Artists like T.I., Lil Flip, Ludacris, Nappy Roots, Trick Daddy, Trina, and Trae all made their mainstream debuts during this time frame. In 2004, OutKast won six Grammies for their album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, including Best Album.[9] Big Boi, Andre 3000 and many other Atlanta rappers played an enormous part in bringing Southern hip hop to the popularity level it has reached today. In 2005, the Houston rap scene got wide audience, and many Houston rappers started to get nation-wide and world-wide audience such as Paul Wall, Mike Jones, Chamillionaire, UGK, Pimp C, Bun B, Lil' Flip, and Slim Thug. During this time, Baton Rouge made its mainstream entrance through rappers of Trill Entertainment, a label started by Pimp C. The most prominent artists from this label are Webbie, Lil Boosie, Foxx, and Mouse on the Track.

Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse -
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 -
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought -
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times -
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 -
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution -
