Off A Travelin: Oakland B&O Museum
A trip to Oakland, MD to visit the Oakland B&O Museum, housed in the original B&O Station built in 1884. The station was the vision of John W. Garrett, President of the B&O Railroad and namesake of the county the station is locate in. The museum includes a small but interesting display relating to the B&O and its importance to the region.
For more information on the station, please visit the museum's website:

B&O Station-Oakland MD (with Garrett County MD scenes) (1980s & 90s)
I recently, for the heck of it, checked out the Google street view of this classic station-and discovered it converted from station to tourist trap! Well, here it is...still a station! The Amtrak Cincinattian ran here until 1981.
Of course, CSX now operates the route, and I assume, also owns the station. If anyone has more info please comment.
We see the station during fair weather and in the dead of winter. Also featured are Oakland and Garrett County MD winter scenes-a really fantastic Maryland county to visit!!
The fair weather video was shot on May 12 1986 in VHS and and the winter scenes were shot on January 2 1996 in 8mm.
Have a look!

1993-94LeafRunSteamLocomotive.divx
This is some footage from two years, 1993-94 that I shot from the back deck of our home in Scott Depot WV. It was a limited run called the Leaf Run in the fall from Huntington to Hinton WV. For several years they used a real steam locomotive to pull the train. It is a piece of history. Listen to that distinctive steam whistle echo off the hills as it passes through our valley. Makes the hair on my neck stand up! Enjoy! ps. My Great Granddad and Granddad were both engineers.

Day Odyssey Series: More Pennsylvania!
First of all, would like to give a progress report on Dolly's (right) foot surgery, as many of you wrote in wishing her well. The surgery on Friday April 20 went great. Dolly's in good spirits, but experiencing some post-op pain, which is to be expected. She has to be very careful ascending and descending stairs, but I'm always behind her, should she slip. She wears a boot to keep her foot in a comfortable (as much as possible under these conditions) position. Probably be at least a couple weeks before she can get around reasonably comfortably, but hopefully before the next odyssey. Dolly wishes to thank all those who sent their well-wishes, and sends her love to all who have supported her-and us-through the years.
Second: I apologize for the extra length of this video...shot more than I thought I did! Hope you will enjoy anyway...
The next installment of our Baltimore-based Day Odyssies takes us back to the Commonwealth (as they refer to it) of Pennsylvania. We explore the central and east-central parts of the state-I mean, commonwealth. A few new routes, and other first-time treats! We'll make stops in Mifflin, Lewistown, Sunbury, Northumberland and Halifax. Great mountain views too. All in all-not a half-bad journey! So-hop in, buckle those seat belts, and LET'S GO!
Not much of a description here, but by now I'm sure most of you know what to expect from yer' frog...
Done on April 5 2018.

Cumberland West - B&O Cumberland Gateway
The B&O Railroad in Cumberland
Today in 1953, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, through the Cumberland gateway, links 13 great states to the nation. Millions of tons of freight and tens of thousands of passengers are focused on Cumberland, as a vital link in a vast transportation network. This network encompasses service from New York and Washington in the East, to Chicago and St. Louis in the Midwest.
NOTES
This movie was done following promotional railroad movies of the 50s, using the Cumberland West HO layout for showing moving trains and locations.
Initially Shot, Cut and Edited in August 2014, and presented at the B&O national convention on 9/2014, but the final cut was done a year later.
Maryland | Wikipedia audio article
Maryland (US: (listen) MERR-əl-ənd) is a state in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, bordering Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia to its south and west; Pennsylvania to its north; and Delaware to its east. The state's largest city is Baltimore, and its capital is Annapolis. Among its occasional nicknames are Old Line State, the Free State, and the Chesapeake Bay State. It is named after the English queen Henrietta Maria, known in England as Queen Mary.Sixteen of Maryland's twenty-three counties border the tidal waters of the Chesapeake Bay estuary and its many tributaries, which combined total more than 4,000 miles of shoreline. Although one of the smallest states in the U.S., it features a variety of climates and typographical features that have earned it the moniker of America in Miniature. In a similar vein, Maryland's geography, culture, and history combines elements of the Mid-Atlantic, Northeastern, and South Atlantic regions of the country.
One of the original Thirteen Colonies of Great Britain, Maryland was founded by George Calvert, a Catholic convert who sought to provide a religious haven for Catholics persecuted in England. In 1632, Charles I of England granted Calvert a colonial charter, naming the colony after his wife, Queen Mary. Unlike the Pilgrims and Puritans, who enforced religious conformity in their settlements, Calvert envisioned a colony where people of different religious sects would coexist under the principle of toleration. Accordingly, in 1649 the Maryland General Assembly passed an Act Concerning Religion, which enshrined this principle by penalizing anyone who reproached a fellow Marylander based on religious affiliation. Nevertheless, religious strife was common in the early years, and Catholics remained a minority, albeit in greater numbers than in any other English colony.
Maryland's early settlements and population centers clustered around rivers and other waterways that empty into the Chesapeake Bay. Its economy was heavily plantation based, centered mostly on the cultivation of tobacco. The need for cheap labor led to a rapid expansion of indentured servants, penal labor, and African slaves. In 1760, Maryland's current boundaries took form following the settlement of a long-running border dispute with Pennsylvania. Maryland was an active participant in the events leading up to the American Revolution, and by 1776 its delegates signed the Declaration of Independence. Many of its citizens subsequently played key political and military roles in the war. In 1790, the state ceded land for the establishment of the U.S. capital of Washington, D.C.
Although a slave state, Maryland remained in the Union during the U.S. Civil War, its strategic location giving it a significant role in the conflict. After the war, Maryland took part in the Industrial Revolution, driven by its seaports, railroad networks, and mass immigration from Europe. Since the Second World War, the state's population has grown rapidly, to approximately six million residents, and it is among the most densely populated states in the nation. As of 2015, Maryland had the highest median household income of any state, owing in large part to its close proximity to Washington, D.C. and a highly diversified economy spanning manufacturing, services, higher education, and biotechnology. Maryland has been ranked as one of the best governed states in the country. The state's central role in American history is reflected by its hosting of some of the highest numbers of historic landmarks per capita.
Day Odyssey Series: National Pike: Keysers Ridge MD to Hendrysburg OH
Here it is! The next part of the National Pike! The Pike in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and even a bit of eastern Ohio! And I just know you've been waiting for it!
Most of the Pike is now US 40, but we take as many portions of the old pike as physically possible. Interesting how much of the original road was paved in brick!
We begin where we left off on the Pike: Keysers Ridge MD, then continue west from there into the wilds of western Pennsylvania, the West Virginia panhandle, and into Ohio. All the usual history-and a few items of interest as well! We'll visit the grave of General Braddock, who was mortally wounded at Fort Duquesne near Pittsburgh in 1755, then buried beneath the road he built (with eulogy delivered by a 23-yr old George Washington). We'll also see some historic toll houses, S-bridges, and...Madonna (NOT the one you think).
And, again, examples of localities that got lapped off the 1930s realignment and didn't fare so well, along with towns kept on the reroute, though a few of them could also stand some renewal. As jobs dried up and businesses closed, even some of those towns fell into (at least some) disrepair.
And, of course, gotta throw a train station into the mix: we have a look at the historic B&O RR station in Washington PA.
Great scenery along much of the road! In fact, we pass through Scenery Hill PA, though I'm not sure of the origin of the name. And-as far as names go-we'll see a place that sounds like frogs live there, and the birthplace of someone whose name sounds like a frog.
Come join us again! You're always welcome to ride along!
