Jeff Donnelly Presents: Miami Beach Tropical Art Deco: Origins
Jeff Donnelly, MDPL’s Public Historian, will present his view of the origins of Miami Beach Tropical Art Deco, asking and attempting to answer three questions:
• I wonder where they got that idea?
• I wonder how that idea got here?
• I wonder who brought what, when, how and why?
About Jeff Donnelly
Jeff Donnelly is the Public Historian of the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL). Since 1988, he has led walking and bus tours of the Miami Beach Architectural District (Art Deco District) under the aegis of MDPL. He continues to contribute to the MDPL Art Deco + Mimo Tour Guide Academy, which he founded in 1990.
He was a Lecturer in the American Studies Program at the University of Miami from 2007-2017, teaching courses in “History of Florida, “History and Culture of South Florida,” and “Urban Renaissance, South Beach in Historical Perspective.”
He is the co-author (with Allan Shulman and Randall Robinson) of Miami Architecture: An AIA Guide to Downtown, the Beaches and Coconut Grove, published in June 2010. He is a frequent reviewer for History/Miami, H-Florida and other publications.
He holds a research doctorate from New York University in American Studies, with emphases on urban history, literature and politics. In New York, he used the built environment both as material for his research and as an aid to instruction, conducting many tours over the years in lower Manhattan and other parts of the New York Metropolitan area in support of his teaching at Fordham and New York Universities. In Miami, he uses the “city as school” methodology in his classes in local history and culture as well as the MDPL tour program.
From 1987 through 2004, he served as history teacher and department chair at Miami Country Day School. From 1991 to 1995, he was a Master Teacher in the Woodrow Wilson Foundation’s TORCH (Teachers Teaching Teachers) training program.
Nominated by the Miami Design Preservation League, he served on the City of Miami Beach Historic Preservation Board from January 2007, and as Chair of the Board from January 2009 through September 2010.
Other Board memberships include Miami Beach Community Development Corporation, Miami Design Preservation League, LeMoyne College, and Fordham University.

Art Deco Historic District
Art Deco (/ˌɑrt ˈdɛkoʊ/), or Deco, is an influential visual arts design style that first appeared in France after World War I and began flourishing internationally in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s before its popularity waned after World War II.[1] It is an eclectic style that combines traditional craft motifs with Machine Age imagery and materials. The style is often characterized by rich colours, bold geometric shapes and lavish ornamentation.
Deco emerged from the interwar period when rapid industrialisation was transforming culture. More info Please Visit:

Miami Beach Visual Memoirs Project
We are recording the memoirs of the City of Miami Beach through the stories of people who have been a part its history. Their stories are being recorded using professional audio and visual equipment. These interviews will then be combined and edited to create a museum installation that will be housed at MDPL's Art Deco Welcome Center on Ocean Drive
