Wilde About Texas: Blanco courthouse has eclectic history
1-26-2011
By: Russell Wilde
The Old Blanco County Courthouse manager Lesley Griffin says the 125-year-old building is more a community center than a courthouse.
The building was built in 1885, but it was only used as a courthouse for four years, she said.
After county lines were redrawn in 1889, the county seat moved north to Johnson City and a few years later a courthouse was built there. In Blanco, the old courthouse has served many purposes. It's been a school, a barbecue joint and even a hospital. As the old building approached its centennial, there was renewed interest in saving it after it was sold.
When the man bought it as it was going to move, we didn't want a big hole in our town. A group of people got together saying, 'We can't let this beautiful old building just be gone,' Griffin said.
Headed by the Old Blanco County Courthouse Preservation Society, renovations and improvements have continued to ensure the iconic building remains the center of town.
Business owner Elizabeth Waller-Broyal says the courthouse square is the heart of the town.
It's our little downtown community. It's the place to be, she said.
Waller-Broyal's store, called On the Square, has been on the square for more than a decade. She says Blanco attracts everyone from cowboys to Harley riders.
Blanco's a great spot for you to ride to. We're right in the middle of the Hill Country, Waller-Broyal said.
The scenic spot has also attracted Hollywood. The old courthouse makes an appearance in Oscar-nominated True Grit.
We were all thrilled when they filmed 'True Grit.' It was exciting. Our town's never seen anything like that, Griffin said.
Now that Hollywood's lights are fading, the old building is returning to its role as a gathering place.
It's kind of like the meeting place in Blanco. Everyone knows where the courthouse is, Griffin said.
Man charged after Fayette County deputy shot in the face
A suspect has been charged Monday and is accused of shooting a Fayette County deputy in the face last Thursday in La Grange.
Troup County Police Shooting
A LaGrange man fired a gun at a Troup County Sheriff’s deputy early this morning was shot twice and injured when the deputy returned fire.
The deputy was uninjured and placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the GBI’s investigation, the sheriff said.
“Right after midnight, we got a call that shots were fired in the area,” the sheriff said. “Once the deputy got there, he encountered the suspect sitting under his carport in a chair and (he) was ranting and raving about something. You can’t really tell what he was mad about, but during that brief encounter, he picks up a gun and shoots a couple of times toward our deputy. The deputy returns fire, striking him twice. He struck him in the elbow, which ended up going through into his torso, and he struck him in the leg.”
“As standard protocol, we’ve called in the GBI and they are conducting an investigation,” he said. “Anytime we have an officer-involved shooting, we want them (GBI) to come in as a unbiased third party to look at it and investigating that. … We have no reason to believe this is anything other than a justified shooting.”
Caldwell faces charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
The suspect, Caldwell, had no previous encounters with deputies at the residence where the shooting occurred, but deputies had been dispatched there in the past, Woodruff said.

Officials break up Troup County dog fighting ring
An anonymous tip leads authorities to a suspected dog fighting ring in Troup County. Officers said they seized a dozen dogs from two different properties. The man behind the operation is facing several charges and is on the run.
The dog fighting investigation began with an anonymous tip, something the Troup County marshals said they take very seriously. Marshals seized 12 dogs from two different properties. The living conditions were hellish.
“No food, no water. They were undernourished and you could tell that they had been fighting dogs, old scarrings and new scarrings on them,” said Troup County Mashall Chief Lonza Edmonson.
Marshal also seized a treadmill used to keep the fighting dogs fit for the ring.
The search for Travis Cameron, 31, who according to state records is also currently on probation for the sale and distribution of cocaine, but that’s not surprising to the marshals.
“Usually pit bullfighting leads to other crimes, gambling, drugs, firearms, so you really don't know what you are going into when you are going into these situations,” said Troup County Marshall Lisa Lindsey.
The dogs are now at the Troup County Animal Shelter. They will be working with rescue groups to see if they are capable of being adopted.
“Usually LaGrange Animal Control will put them through a variety of tests to see how they are with animals and other people, and based on the findings of the test they will determine the outcome for where the dogs will go,” said Lindsey.
Meanwhile, Cameron is facing very serious charges.
“We have got 12 counts of dog fighting charges pending and 12 counts of aggravated cruelty to animals,” said Chief Edmonson.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Travis Cameron is asked to call the Troup County Marshal’s Office.
