Study Abroad in China | City #4 : Nanjing & Huangshan | Gilman Scholarship Project Proposal
This video was created to fulfill my Gilman Scholarship Proposal Project. The Study Abroad in China was from Brooklyn College from May 31st – June 28th 2017 with a total of 28 students and 2 professors. The more students there are, the more classes are offered. This time around 2 classes were offered: Beginner Chinese and Development of the Silk Road. This Study Abroad program visited 7 different cities in China: Beijing, Xi’an, Nanjing, Suzhou, Huangshan and Shanghai.
There should be about 3 or 4 more videos left of this project.
A big and special THANK YOU to all those who let me use their photos (especially Nick) and or videos. As well as a huge THANK YOU to our professor on the trip Professor Lu & Professor Huang who took great care of us.
Anyone in the video referred to by name (Victor, Renella & Diane) was a classmate on the trip.
This was honestly one of the best decisions I have ever made and I am incredibly thankful to the Gilman Scholarship Program for being able to fund my journey and allowing me to experience this.
Feel free to contact me about any questions through the comment section of this video or through my e-mail keyabari04@gmail.com.

DAMARIS REYNOLDS Interview - Charles and Anne Lindbergh's Flight to Nanjing China 1931 Flood
Damaris Reynolds and I met in 2005. For 70 years, my father Hutch had been searching for evidence of the greatest flood in history - China, Jiangsu Provence, August 1931. Hutch wanted to honor his father, Lyt Harnsberger, a Presbyterian Missionary who quit the church to lead the rebuilding of the grand Cabal levees in Gaoyou, where 26 breaks had flooded a 10,000 square mile area. But Hutch did not get to see this discovery, he had died 3 weeks earlier. And so at 1 AM, I googled Flood, 1931 China photos and ended up on Charles Lindbergh.com. That's where my life intersected with Damaris, now my dear friend.
Damaris posted her family China story and photos of Charles and Anne Lindbergh staying at their home in Nanjing Sept 1931, when they arrived at the end of his North to the Orient flight. He landed in the middle of the flood and Damaris father Willis peck, was the US Consul General. Lindbergh flew over the floods, photographing and mapping what is called the greatest flood in history. He left his photos and some of the items from his plane at their house (the plane is now in the Smithsonian).
When I saw Damaris photos, a real chill came over me, for I knew this was the grestest flood I had ever seen, 70,0000 square miles, bigger than the state of New York. Then, I recognized the Grand Canal, and enormous ruptures in the levees, and a smokestack from our family albums. I found that Lindbergh flew directly over Gaoyou levee disaster photographing the great levees breaks along the Grand Canal. Damaris held the key to a 70 year old family mystery, in a photo that told it all. This was Lyt's dike - and Lindy had photographed it, both of them were even in the New York Times.
I came to see Damaris as a dear friend, a life messenger of some sort. She is 99 years old now and in our thoughts and prayers. Her smile and sense of humor, the depth of understanding of life and the world, her perspective on history and the realtionship of the US and China. I count Damaris as one of the most special persons I have ever met, her own story colliding with mine exploding into a discovery that my father spent his whole life trying to make. To honor one's father is one of life's greatest privilege, and Damaris allowed me to do so, and to honor my father by in fact paying tribute to his own father. It's a rare gift Damaris bestowed upon me. It resulted in a museum in China, and movie on CCTV 9 telling the story. Less than eight months after I met Damaris, her photos filled a museum in Gaoyou created to honor the heroes of the 1931 flood disaster, Lyt Harnsberger, Charles and Anne Lindbergh, General Wang and Hermit Lin. Damaris' photos were shared in print subsequently by the Shanghai Daily, the Beijing Daily, the Marin County Independent Journal and other publications.
This video honors Damaris, her love of life - we should it at the Lindbergh Symposium in Florida in 2007.
Thank you Damaris - you lit up my life and will be forever in my heart.

Hangzhou ([xɑ̌ŋʈʂóʊ] ( listen)), formerly romanised as Hangchow, is the capital and largest city of Zhejiang Province in Eastern China.[4] It sits at the head of Hangzhou Bay on China's coast between Shanghai and Ningbo. Hangzhou grew to prominence as the southern terminus of the Grand Canal and has been one of the most renowned and prosperous cities in China for much of the last millennium, due in part to its beautiful natural scenery. The city's West Lake is its best-known attraction.
Hangzhou is classified as a sub-provincial city[5] and forms the core of the Hangzhou Metropolitan Area,[1] the fourth-largest metropolitan area in China.[6] During the 2010 Chinese census, the metropolitan area held 21.102 million people over an area of 34,585 km2 (13,353 sq mi).[1] Hangzhou prefecture had a registered population of 8.7 million[7] and the built-up area (including the 9 urban districts and the Keqiao and Yuecheng districts of Shaoxing) held 8,874,348.

Museum exhibition explores prosperous period of Ming Dynasty ++NEW++
LEADIN:
Intricate, inventive and ahead of their time - and that's just the vases.
London's British Museum is unveiling their latest exhibition, an exploration of a pivotal period of Chinese history while under the rule of the Ming Dynasty.
Between 1400 and 1450, China's emperors established Beijing as the state's new capital city while treasure ships explored the seas.
STORYLINE:
From gilded bronze gods to intricate Buddhist paintings, London's British Museum is stepping back around 600 years into the past.
It was then that one family - the Ming Dynasty - controlled China, at the time the largest and most powerful state in the world.
And it shows an important 50-year period in a new light.
It wasn't until the early 1500's that the Portuguese and Spanish began to trade directly with China .
But rather than over-emphasising the impact of Europe, as many have done before, this exhibition shows how global China was around a hundred years prior.
By the 1500s, European trade was tiny fraction in terms of what China was involved with at the time.
This iron sword is thought to be one of the most beautifully and technically intricate weapons to survive from the early Ming Period.
It was commissioned by the Yongle Emperor (1403-1424) and is inscribed with the words 'Precious Sword ' in Tibetan.
It's a new look at Chinese history, says exhibition co-curator, Jessica Harrison-Hall.
A look at fifty-years in the early Ming dynasty from about 1400 to 1450 and it shows all aspects of court culture at that time.
A system of multiple courts existed across China during the 50-year period, while four different emperors ruled the throne.
It was the first of those, named Yongle, that moved the state's capital from Nanjing to Beijing, with the Forbidden City at its heart.
Work began in 1417 and the city became the political centre of the Ming Empire from the 1420s onwards.
To this day, the Forbidden City is the national emblem on coins and military uniforms.
The capital gets established at Beijing with the Forbidden City at its heart, says Harrison-Hall.
And a system of multiple courts exists across China, and also voyages are sent by the Ming emperors to South East Asia, the Middle East and the east coast of Africa.
Chinese treasure ships were sent far and wide, creating links which spanned from Kyoto to Mogadishu.
It's thought this was partly to re-establish Mongul trading routes and partly to proclaim and legitimise a new Chinese emperor.
The distances these ships travelled is evidenced in the gifts of gold, silver, paintings, porcelains, weapons, costumes and furniture on display here.
These gold vessels were found in the tombs of members of nobility, the supply of gold and precious gems was controlled by China's central court.
This is the beginning of the Chinese diaspora in South East Asia, says Harrison-Hall.
But also a time when people are coming directly into China, bringing new ideas and new goods.
It was those new ideas which influenced perhaps the Ming dynasty's most famous export; vases.
The design of these intricate containers turned a technological corner during the period, with new recipes for the bodies and glaze.
This brightly-coloured jar and cover was made to decorate the halls of the emperor's palaces.
The exhibition features numerous porcelain pieces which demonstrate China's influential contact with the rest of the world.
We have a whole vitrine of shapes which were inspired by middle-eastern candle sticks, from central Asian jade, glass from Syria and so forth, says Harrison-Hall.
So the international contacts are effectively reflected in the porcelain of the period.
Zhentong would later reclaim the throne in 1457 under the name Tianshun.
Before Columbus was even born.

We continue the tour of Water Town in the Shanghai area.
January 24th
The Broadway Mansions Hotel has a great breakfast, an all you can eat buffet with every possible food product known to man. Well it seems like that anyway..
Around 10:00 am we all met together in the front lobby and began a day of travel and visits. We again took the wee Yellow bus to a local outdoor commercial market and then after about an hour or so of shopping we visited with a local family. The husband of 83 and his wife of 79 travel China and take photos. It spent a great few hours with them, after which we went to a local restaurant and had a traditional Chinese New Years lunch.
The lunch consisted of many many small dishes, much like a Dim Sum. Lots of seafood and pork were used in the dishes.. We had a great meal and after a rest we drove to a local fish market. Yes a fish market. Very interesting experience, the market was dark, smelled of fish (da) and was packed with people all purchasing very small quantities of live fish. Yes, everything in the market was alive. No frozen or process fish here.. it looked like they only purchased one days portion. I guess in a country where food preparation is very important it would make sense to only purchase fresh produce daily.
Again back on the wee Yellow bus and off to the Chinese National Museum. We arrived there just before closing, around 4:00pm. So we only had at best one hour to tour this huge facility. Seven floor of Chinese Art and Culture covering over 8,000 years of history. We broke up into small teams and with Ella's help we explored the history of Jade in China, The history of costumes and clothing and finally the art of the written word.
All the exhibits were amazing and deserved much more time I we gave them.. So at about 5pm the guards started hurdling the masses out of the Museum..
It was a trip back to the Hotel. Just an informal pick up dinner with three others in the group. It took several visit to all three hotel restaurants before we ended up at the French restaurant. Yes, I know.. THE FRENCH RESTAURANT in China!! I guess we were really tired and not thinking too well..
