The call to Consolidated Edison came at 9:13 a.m. on Wednesday: The smell of gas, detectable the night before, had strengthened around two buildings by 116th Street and Park Avenue in East Harlem.
Less than 20 minutes later, the buildings were gone, leveled by a tremendous explosion whose tremors could be felt more than a mile away.
The blast, which city officials said was touched off by a gas leak, killed at least three people and wounded at least two dozen more, including two critically. Rescue workers were searching the rubble from the buildings before dark fell, hoping to find the nine occupants of the buildings still missing by 7 p.m.
The explosion blew out windows in surrounding buildings and sent debris crashing onto nearby streets. People were trapped in their cars, in the rubble and in neighboring apartments. Others rushed toward the towering plume of flames and smoke, making desperate rescue attempts.

There was little warning, certainly not enough to have safely evacuated the area, Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a news conference, near where the buildings once stood at 1644 and 1646 Park Avenue. This is a tragedy of the worst kind because there was no indication in time to save people, he said, warning that the search will take quite a bit of time.
The cause of the gas leak remained unclear on Wednesday night as a team from the National Transportation Safety Board, which oversees pipeline safety, arrived to help investigate.
Jennifer Salas and her husband, Jordy Salas, lived at 1644 Park Avenue; she said on Wednesday that her husband and the couple's dog were in their apartment at the time of the collapse, and were still missing.
Through tears, Ms. Salas, who is pregnant, begged firefighters to find her husband.
The couple were among several neighbors who said that they had detected a gaslike odor before, but that it seemed to worsen on Tuesday night.
Last night it smelled like gas, but then the smell vanished and we all went to sleep, she said.
Another couple, Shavonne Cano and her fiancé, Corey Louire, said they also smelled gas on Tuesday night, and slept with a window open. When the gas was still noticeable in the morning, they called Con Edison.
Mr. Louire said he was told not to turn on a cellphone or anything else, and to leave the apartment and the building, at 1652 Park Avenue. He was in the lobby when he heard the explosion.
Elizabeth Matthews, a spokeswoman for the utility, confirmed that a customer at 1652 Park Avenue called to report a heavy gas odor at 9:13 a.m. Two minutes later, two Con Ed crews were dispatched, and they arrived just after the explosion.
The Fire Department said it received the first report of a fire at 9:31 a.m., and discovered on arriving two minutes later that the buildings had collapsed. There were a total of 15 apartments in the two buildings; one had a church on the ground floor, and the other had a piano store.

The buildings were five stories and about 55 feet tall, according to Buildings Department records.
The injured were taken to several area hospitals; most were treated and released. Officials said 13 people went to Harlem Hospital Center, including a 15-year-old boy in critical condition; 22 people at Mount Sinai Hospital, including a woman in critical condition with head trauma; and 18 at Metropolitan Hospital Center, all with minor injuries.

A Florida Inmate named Dale Clacks Also Known as Dale Castro was raped earlier this year by inmates in the Holmes County Florida jail. The rape was facilitated by a Florida correctional officer named Joel Patrick. Capt. Patrick opened the door for the inmates and encouraged them to engage in the sexual assault of Castro. Capt. Patrick believed that Castro was guilty of a sex crime. In addition to opening Castro's cell for the other inmates who later raped him, Capt. Patrick force Castro to drink urine from a toilet. Capt. PoliceAbuse.com has obtained a copy of the investigation of deputies employed by the Holmes County Sheriff office. As a result of our complaint the Sheriff's office initiated a criminal investigation which was turned over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The correctional officer was arrested on April 1, 2013 and charge with criminal battery on an inmate.
Among the allegations confirmed through investigation are a series of abusive acts amounting to torture and humiliation rituals. The victim of the attacks was an inmate presumed to be guilty of a sex crime. The jail staff notified inmates of the sex crime and encouraged them to assault the inmate victim. The victim was also forced to drink urine and brush his teeth with a toothbrush after scrubbing a toilet. Our investigation is continuing.

Anne Hutchinson (née Marbury; July 1591 – August 1643) was a Puritan spiritual adviser, mother of 15, and an important participant in the Antinomian Controversy which shook the infant Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1636 to 1638. Her strong religious convictions were at odds with the established Puritan clergy in the Boston area, and her popularity and charisma helped create a theological schism that threatened to destroy the Puritans' religious community in New England. She was eventually tried and convicted, then banished from the colony with many of her supporters.
Hutchinson was born in Alford, Lincolnshire, England, the daughter of Francis Marbury, an Anglican cleric and school teacher who gave her a far better education than most other girls received. She lived in London as a young adult, and there married her old friend from home William Hutchinson. The couple moved back to Alford where they began following dynamic preacher John Cotton in the nearby port of Boston, Lincolnshire. Cotton was compelled to emigrate in 1633, and the Hutchinsons followed a year later with their 11 children and soon became well established in the growing settlement of Boston in New England. Anne was a midwife and very helpful to those needing her assistance, as well as forthcoming with her personal religious understandings. Soon she was hosting women at her house weekly, providing commentary on recent sermons. These meetings became so popular that she began offering meetings for men as well, including the young governor of the colony Henry Vane.
She began to accuse the local ministers (except for Cotton and her husband's brother-in-law John Wheelwright) of preaching a covenant of works rather than a covenant of grace, and many ministers began to complain about her increasingly blatant accusations, as well as certain theological teachings that did not accord with orthodox Puritan theology. The situation eventually erupted into what is commonly called the Antinomian Controversy, culminating in her 1637 trial, conviction, and banishment from the colony. This was followed by a March 1638 church trial in which she was put out of her congregation.
Hutchinson and many of her supporters established the settlement of Portsmouth with encouragement from Providence Plantations founder Roger Williams in what became the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. After her husband's death a few years later, threats of Massachusetts taking over Rhode Island compelled Hutchinson to move totally outside the reach of Boston into the lands of the Dutch. Five of her older surviving children remained in New England or in England, while she settled with her younger children near an ancient landmark called Split Rock in what later became The Bronx in New York City. Tensions were high at the time with the Siwanoy Indian tribe. In August 1643, Hutchinson, six of her children, and other household members were massacred by Siwanoys during Kieft's War. The only survivor was her nine year-old daughter Susanna, who was taken captive.

Police have identified the man responsible for killing four people in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday before taking his own life as 33-year-old Cedric G. Prather.Prather died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after shooting his ex-wife, another adult and two children Saturday afternoon in Douglasville, about 20 miles west of Atlanta, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said Sunday.The sheriff's office identified the adults killed as 33-year-old Latoya A. Andrews Prather's ex-wife; and 33-year-old Joseph Terry Brown. A 7-year-old child died at the scene, while a 9-year-old later died at hospital, the sheriff's office said in a statement.Two other children, an 8-year-old and a 15-year-old, were in critical but stable condition at a hospital, the statement said.Neighbors said they called 911 and tried to help the victims as best they could before rescuers arrived.One neighbor, Teresa Carter, 59, said she heard shots, and then one of the girls scream, before hearing four more shots.Another local resident, Brandon Hallman, said he was a few houses down when the shooting started. We just grabbed some towels and kind of went down there to try and help before the paramedics got here,” he said.A press conference is scheduled for Monday, where officials plan to release more information about the shooting.

At least 15 people have been killed as militants from Islamist group al-Shabab stormed Garissa University College in Kenya at around 5 a.m. Thursday.
Many students were in their dorms sleeping when the shooting started.
According to witnesses, gunmen were heard asking students whether they were Muslims or Christians. Christians were shot on the spot. Other students were held hostage. Muslims and non-Muslims were held in different groups.
Students attending morning prayers at the university mosque were not attacked.
Kenyan forces have surrounded the university and have cleared at least three dorms, with the militants still occupying one. At least 500 students are still unaccounted for.
Officials said one militant was arrested when he tried to flee the scene. At least 15 people were killed and more than 60 injured.
More than nine hours after the attack began, heavy gunfire and explosions continue at the university.

The Wright brothers, Orville (August 19, 1871 – January 30, 1948) and Wilbur (April 16, 1867 – May 30, 1912), were two American aviators, engineers, inventors, and aviation pioneers who are generally credited with inventing, building, and flying the world's first successful airplane. They made the first controlled, sustained flight of a powered, heavier-than-air aircraft on December 17, 1903, four miles south of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. In 1904–05 the brothers developed their flying machine into the first practical fixed-wing aircraft. Although not the first to build experimental aircraft, the Wright brothers were the first to invent aircraft controls that made fixed-wing powered flight possible.
The brothers' fundamental breakthrough was their invention of three-axis control, which enabled the pilot to steer the aircraft effectively and to maintain its equilibrium. This method became and remains standard on fixed-wing aircraft of all kinds. From the beginning of their aeronautical work, the Wright brothers focused on developing a reliable method of pilot control as the key to solving the flying problem. This approach differed significantly from other experimenters of the time who put more emphasis on developing powerful engines. Using a small homebuilt wind tunnel, the Wrights also collected more accurate data than any before, enabling them to design and build wings and propellers that were more efficient than any before. Their first U.S. patent, 821,393, did not claim invention of a flying machine, but rather, the invention of a system of aerodynamic control that manipulated a flying machine's surfaces.They gained the mechanical skills essential for their success by working for years in their shop with printing presses, bicycles, motors, and other machinery. Their work with bicycles in particular influenced their belief that an unstable vehicle like a flying machine could be controlled and balanced with practice. From 1900 until their first powered flights in late 1903, they conducted extensive glider tests that also developed their skills as pilots. Their bicycle shop employee Charlie Taylor became an important part of the team, building their first airplane engine in close collaboration with the brothers.
The Wright brothers' status as inventors of the airplane has been subject to counter-claims by various parties. Much controversy persists over the many competing claims of early aviators. Edward Roach, historian for the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park argues that they were excellent self-taught engineers who could run a small company, but they did not have the business skills or temperament to dominate the growing aviation industry.
Asian Social Justice Internship
On January 24, the Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center and Archives held the first completion ceremony for its new Asian Internship program.
The program, co-sponsored by Korean American Civic Empowerment (KACE), features intern interviews with Korean comfort women - Asian women who were teenagers during World War II and suffered trauma during the occupation of their country. During the fall 2012 semester, Queensborough students interviewed former comfort women in the New York area and even connected with women in South Korea, who shared their stories via the internet.
Historians believe as many as 200,000 girls and young women were kidnapped or lured from Korea, China, and other occupied lands to serve as sex slaves for the Japanese Army during World War II.
The Asian Internship program, intended to shine a light on the comfort women issue, has attracted global attention.
