Segment from our History Channel series (produced by KPI) in which we help rebuild this Weird NJ landmark.
PALACE OF DEPRESSION Vineland, New Jersey
PALACE OF DEPRESSION
Vineland, New Jersey
We found this location pretty easily. On approach we were disappointed to see how much has been destroyed, but over the last few years and over the next 3 years several people have been working on it to rebuild it. (See links provided)
We walked up and started taking photos and after a few minutes heard a noise, then a man's voice. Oh great we thought, a bum or the police. And some guy came around the corner with a light. After a short talk we explained we were just taking pics and then he (Jeffrey Tirante) explained that he was staying on site and was part of the rebuilding project. He had many interesting stories to tell about the original building from 1929, the razing of it in 1969 and the current rebuilding. He took us on a small tour underground the location and was very informative concerning the property. We plan to go back soon and interview him to get even more stories documented.

Menantico Colony of Vineland (Axis Video/Pine Barren Films)
Menantico Colony of Vineland 5-5-11
It was a bright and sunny Thursday so we planned to ventured out and to explore The Menantico Colony of Vineland. Finding it was pretty easy and we parked on a side street to avoid the hassle of the police and the security that patrol the area. We journeyed down a path that ran next to the main road leading to the compound to gain access to the location. There were still about 10 buildings standing and it appeared that 2 of the buildings were being renovated, but the rest of the buildings were caving in on itself as you can see by the pictures.
Many of the buildings were boarded up but 2 were not. I entered one of the buildings and my foot immediately crushed thru the brittle wood so I turned around and got exterior shots.
Entering the 2nd building I heard a real loud bang, so I paused to try to see if we were alone. Nothing, so I continued to walk around and noted more noises coming from upstairs. The sounds may have been birds, raccoon, an opossum or the ghosts of long forgotten Indians that had their burial grounds built upon. I couldn't get up the steps due to them falling apart, so I went back outside to get more photos. But I kept hearing banging noise, walking around the whole perimeter I still couldn't determine what that noise was. Other than the noises, nothing out of the ordinary occurred.
THE HISTORY:
In 1888, the New Jersey Home for the Education and Care of Feebleminded Children was opened in southern New Jersey (later the Vineland Training School). Among many expansions of the institution, the Menantico Colony was to be used as a state farm to treat feeble-minded young men, using rural settings and challenging work to ease the mind. The work also served as occupational therapy in hopes to return the men with skills that would support them outside the institution. In 1913, 530 acres of and were purchased at a bargain price of $10 an acre; the oak scrub landscape contained within was to be transformed into productive farmland. They say a section of the property is built over an Indian burial ground.

The Blue Hole: Winslow Township, New Jersey extended play version (Axis Video)
A cold hand may reach up to greet you. Is it that of the Jersey Devil?
Located within the Pine Barrens of Winslow Township, New Jersey the Blue Hole (also referred to as The Devil's Puddle) is a mysterious body of water that remains cold (averages 50-58 degrees even in the summer months) no matter what time of the year and possibly houses the Jersey Devil himself. The blue water itself is very odd since most of the surrounding lakes are brown in color due to the bog iron and cedar water. The Blue Hole is possibly feed by groundwater as opposed to the surrounding streams.
The Blue Hole, alleged to be bottomless, is approx 70 feet across, almost perfectly round, there are no signs of life within the lake and it is always cold to the touch. Back in the 1930's it was a popular watering hole for the locals and there was a wooden bridge over the Great Egg Harbor River that was washed away in the 1940's or 1960's (depending on who is telling the story) by a storm.
True danger does lurk among the warnings of the Jersey Devil. The hole has become abandoned to the locals due to the fears that it is bottomless, the currents or the Jersey Devil will pull you down to your death. But there are several similar holes in the area and is plagued by quicksand due to the high water table levels in the area. Rumored to be bottomless, others state that the bottom is made up of sugar sand and has claimed many victims. Others state that when you stand near the hole, it is eerily quiet and no sounds can be heard at all. Except for BLAST!! shots fired from the nearby shooting range. The surface of this watery hole is insanely still.
Some say that the hole is bottomless, others claim they have attempted to measure its depth only to fail. Legend states that The Devil Himself uses this hole as his personal portal to Hell. Still others claim that there is an unusual amount of Jersey Devil sightings in this area.
Locals fear swimming here and tell the tales of bodies being pulled out of the hole with scratches on their backs and legs after something pulled them down to their watery grave. Legends and tales are in no short supply and state that whirlpools form and swimmers cannot escape its pull. One man was supposedly pulled from his icy grave with scratches on his legs and black empty holes where his eyes once were. Of course tales of occult activity has also been attached to the location.
My personal opinion is that the Blue Hole is a pingo ( left over from the Ice Age. This would explain the cold water along with why the color is clear as opposed to the murky cedar water of surrounding bodies of water in the area. Below is a picture of a pingo, not The Blue Hole.
New Jersey is full of strange surprises and the Blue Hole is no exception.

Vineland Training School and Menantico Colony
The Vineland curse! Henry Herbert Goddard/Holocaust (Vineland NJ Training School) Prt.1
- I start the recording of her testimony of The Vineland State school @ 3:27 into video.
- This is the link of the original video:
- Notice the woman speaking was cut short of what she was talking about.
- - The 2 women in the video said they were the only 2 that they know that are living who knew anything about this. Their names and titles are:
HistorianRuth Shropshire. and CLAIMED (genealogist so called expert,Arjorie Ingraham.
Who when they did mention there was nothing wrong with them mentally wise, she mentioned.MEGA BUCKS changed the statement to cover it to a name,Pearl Bucks (Brucks?) ...daughter was there...
- Notice what she says, Everyone in Vineland new what went on in the training school. Then the woman brings up,We never gossiped. (That is one of the main rule in Vineland people will curse you for.THE GOSSIP RULE. Vineland cursed church members will literally attack you. They have dirty secrets in this town and they are brainwashing cult driven. They preach the brainwashing messages from 100yrs and still preach this old school to brainwash the community.
- The people who recruited people to this State School for the so called,feeble-minded. Were Police, Social Workers, Psychiatrists, Courts, Churches, Families, from Vineland and throughout the country, mostly New Jersey.
- They admitted that many of them, there was not even anything wrong with them mentally.
- Everything that created the things of the holocaust were mostly by psychiatrists. Which many of their experiments and claims of genetics came from Henry Herbert Goddard who colonized anyone they deemed to be not intelligent and anyone related to them. He isolated them out of the communities and claimed that they should not be a part of civilization.
- Sadly, my adoptive dads' sister was put in there by her parents. The Vineland State School. Who I never new about until years after I moved to Vineland. Which just happened to of been brought up. I never even knew he had a sister. My adopted dad apparently revealed to me at this time that he was severely abused by his parents. (e.g. Tied in Highchairs with being strapped in with belts, and put in the closet days on end in the highchair and also belted.) He never said any of these things to me all my life. -- He was a very gentle nice soul, not mean and no aggressiveness. He was a bit naive and not that insightful and avoided many things, but he was very nice.
- I never heard of Vineland before I got stranded here when I was 19. I am 41 now and have lived here ever since.
- VINELAND IS CURSED!
