I was in good company for this adventure in Seattle, Washington. Chris and I had a couple friends with us to visit this beautiful city surrounded by water, mountains and evergreen forests. We also rented a car to visit the incredible Mount Rainier National Park and the Snoqualmie area.

Inside Voodoo Doughnut, portland, oregon
Voodoo Doughnut is an independent doughnut shop based in Portland, Oregon, U.S.A. The original location, opened in 2003, is at 22 SW 3rd Avenue, just south of the Burnside Bridge, around the corner from Dan and Louis Oyster Bar, and next door to The Paris Theater, a historic adult movie house. Voodoo Doughnut is known for its unusual doughnuts, the eclectic decor of its shops and its iconic pink boxes which feature the company's logo and drawings of voodoo priests. There are two other locations, one at 1501 NE Davis Street in Portland that opened in June 2008, and one in Eugene, Oregon that opened officially in June 2010. The flagship shop closed in April 2011 for an extensive remodeling, which utilized part of Berbati's Pan, the now-closed night club next door. It expanded from 750 square feet (70 m2) to 2,300 sq ft (210 m2) and reopened in June 2011.
In addition to doughnuts, Voodoo Doughnut offers legal wedding services, complete with doughnuts and coffee for the reception.
Portland is a city located in the U.S. state of Oregon, near the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers. As of the 2010 Census, it had a population of 583,776, estimated to have reached 587,865 in 2012 making it the 28th most populous city in the United States. Portland is Oregon's most populous city, and the third most populous city in the Pacific Northwest region, after Seattle, Washington, and Vancouver, British Columbia. The city is also known for its abundant outdoor activities, liberal political values, and beer and coffee enthusiasm. Portland is home to a collection of independent microbreweries, microdistilleries and food carts that contribute to the unofficial but widely utilized[citation needed] slogan Keep Portland Weird.

The Space Needle is a tower in Seattle, Washington, and is a major landmark of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States and a symbol of Seattle. Located at the Seattle Center, it was built for the 1962 World's Fair, during which time nearly 20,000 people a day used the elevators, with over 2.3 million visitors in all for the World Fair. The Space Needle is 605 feet (184 m) high and 138 feet (42 m) wide at its widest point and weighs 9,550 tons. When it was completed it was the tallest structure west of the Mississippi River. It is built to withstand winds of up to 200 mph (320 km/h) and earthquakes up to 9.5 magnitude[citation needed] (which would protect the structure against an earthquake as powerful as the 1700 Cascadia earthquake). The tower has 25 lightning rods on its roof to prevent lightning damage.
The Space Needle features an observation deck at 520 feet (160 m), the SkyCity restaurant at 500 feet (152 m), and a gift shop. From the top of the Needle, one can see not only the Downtown Seattle skyline, but also the Olympic and Cascade Mountains, Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, Elliott Bay and surrounding islands. Photographs of the Seattle skyline often show the Space Needle in a prominent position, even appearing to tower above the rest of the city's skyscrapers, as well as Mount Rainier in the background. This occurs because the tower, which is equivalent in height to a 60-story building, stands roughly four-fifths of a mile (1.3 km) northwest of most downtown skyscrapers.
Visitors can reach the top of the Space Needle via elevators that travel at 10 mph (16 km/h). The trip takes 43 seconds, and some tourists wait in hour-long lines in order to ascend to the top of the tower. On windy days, the elevators are slowed down to a speed of 5 mph. The Space Needle was designated a historic landmark on April 19, 1999.
Seattle (pronounced /siˈætl ̩/) is a coastal port city and the largest city in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is located in the state of Washington between an arm of the Pacific Ocean called Puget Sound and Lake Washington, in King County—of which it is the county seat—about 96 miles (154 km) south of the Canada -- United States border.
The Seattle area has been inhabited for at least 4,000 years, but European settlement began only in the mid-19th century. The first permanent white settlers—Arthur A. Denny and those subsequently known as the Denny Party—arrived November 13, 1851. Early settlements in the area were called New York-Alki (Alki meaning by and by in the local Chinook Jargon) and Duwamps. In 1853, Doc Maynard suggested that the main settlement be renamed Seattle, an anglicized rendition of the name of Sealth, the chief of the two local tribes.
According to the Washington State Office of Financial Management's April 1, 2008 estimate, the city has a municipal population of 592,800, and a metro population of 4,038,741.
From 1869 until 1982, Seattle was known as the Queen City. Seattle's current official nickname is the Emerald City, the result of a contest held in the early 1980s; the reference is to the lush evergreen trees in the surrounding area. Seattle is also referred to informally as the Gateway to Alaska, Rain City, and Jet City, the latter from the local influence of Boeing. Seattle residents are known as Seattleites.
Seattle is the birthplace of grunge music and has a reputation for heavy coffee consumption; coffee companies founded or based in Seattle include Starbucks, Seattle's Best Coffee, and Tully's. There are also many successful independent artisanal espresso roasters and cafes. Researchers at Central Connecticut State University ranked Seattle the most literate city of America's sixty-nine largest cities in 2005 and 2006 and second most literate in 2007, after Minneapolis.[16] Moreover, analysis conducted by the United States Census Bureau of 2003 survey data indicated that Seattle was the most educated large city in the U.S. with 51.6 percent of residents 25 and older having at least bachelor degrees. Based on per capita income, in 2006 the Seattle metropolitan area ranked 17th out of 363 metropolitan areas in a study by the Census Bureau.

Work at the lab falls into three broad categories, ecosystem studies, studies of invasive species, and studies of disease in fish. Recent public alarm about the possible discovery of the Infectious Salmon Anemia virus, in a few salmon off British Columbia, has drawn significant attention to the lab and its experts.

The William Kenzo Nakamura Courthouse was constructed in 1939 with funding for the building having been approved by Congress in 1936 as part of the “The New Deal” instituted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The building has just been renovated so I wanted to go inside and take a look around.

City Passport travel show goes back to visit the Benton Franklin Fair & Rodeo in Tri-Cities, Washington.
Our show host, Melanie Felice, was excited to visit this great annual event that attracts tens of thousands of people from all over eastern Washington state.
HORSE HEAVEN ROUND-UP RODEO
The Horse Heaven Round-Up is one of the premiere rodeos in the Northwest and proud to be part of the Big 4 Rodeo Association, along with the Pendleton Round-Up, the Walla Walla Frontier Days Rodeo and the Lewiston Round-Up.
The Horse Heaven Round-Up features four action-packed performances with top contestants from across the United States and Canada. The rodeo runs Wednesday through Saturday, Aug. 20-23. To help our contestants make the most of their time in Washington, we’ll be holding slack each afternoon. That means cowboys participating in timed events like team roping, calf roping and steer wrestling will have the opportunity to participate twice each day.
The Horse Heaven Round-Up is one of the premiere rodeos in the Northwest and proud to be part of the Big 4 Rodeo Association, along with the Pendleton Round-Up, the Walla Walla Frontier Days Rodeo and the Lewiston Round-Up.
THE AMAZING FOOD
Well, we probably don’t need to tell you about the food at the fair to entice you to go check it out, but we’re going to tell you about it anyways, because it’s to die for!
BACON WRAPPED HOT DOGS. They say everything tastes better with bacon…and we attest to that! The bacon-wrapped hot dogs are truly heaven! Melanie got to go behind the scenes with owner, Daniel, who taught her they cook and prepare the notorious food stand. Check them out at
GLAZED BACON CHEESEBURGER. Yes, you heard right. It’s a bacon cheeseburger in a glazed donut. It didn’t sound appetizing to us at first, but we were definitely surprised when we tried it!
SOFT FROZEN LEMONADE. You can never go wrong with a soft frozen lemonade! Precious from Miranda Treats served us some of their refreshing frozen lemonade, and boy, was it a treat!
COTTON CANDY. Our show host, Melanie, got to hand spin her own cotton candy with Priscely at Moolicious Espresso, and learned the tricks of the trade.
SHAVED ICED. Another way to cool down in the heat of the summer end, is having some shaved ice from Sno Shack, also a Miranda Treats company.
And what a way to end the night taking a ride on the Ferris Wheel, and being able to see the whole fairgrounds from up top!
We want to thank the Benton Franklin Fair & Rodeo for inviting us to come out and film once again. We look forward to being back next year!

New Student Convocation is one of only two occasions where the University president, the Board of Regents, the deans of the 16 schools and colleges and the faculty gather in a formal academic setting focused on students. The other, of course, is the graduation ceremony, Commencement. These two events are the seminal “bookend” events of a college career.
