Unlocking The Pirate Castle
Thanks to John Lyon's Charity (supporters of The Pirate Castle for over 25 years!) we were chosen to take part in the 2017 Volunteer Film Initiative, run in partnership with Media Trust.
Our amazing film-maker, Ellie King, shot the footage over four glorious days in the summer of 2017. It was an incredible experience for all of our staff, service users and volunteers and we're hugely proud of the end result.

Regent's Canal Time-lapse: The Pirate Castle -- Granary Square
The Pirate Castle, Camden -- Granary Square, King's Cross. London.
23/08/13
We travelled along Regent's Canal on the Pirate Viscount narrowboat, crewed by the team from the Pirate Castle, as part of the New Wave Camden art project.
Rather than uploading the entire 90 minute trip, we thought we'd condense it into a convenient time-lapse video, filmed at 1fps.
Set to the jaunty 'Cantina Rag' by Jackson F. Smith, available under Creative Commons.

The Young'uns Podcast Presents: Rex Factor, Live From The Pirate Castle in London
We receive a lot of feedback on The Young’uns Podcast, and one comment that keeps coming around time and time again is: “this folk music stuff is all very well and good, but, when are you going to talk about Saxon monarch Edgar the Peaceable?” Well friends, that time has finally come, as The Young’uns Podcast unites with another podcast: Rex Factor, where British monarchs throughout history battle for supremacy. Last year the Rex Factor won the attentions of the Guardian, and in a desperate and cynical bid to get The Young’uns Podcast noticed, we decided to invite the Rex Factor’s hosts, our good friends Graham and Ali, on to our podcast. Recorded in front of an audience last year at the Pirate Castle in London, we discuss the conundrum that is Richard III; the musical abilities of Henry VIII, play a monarchy based round of the Birthday Game, which gets rather heated; and author and voice of The Transports, Matthew Crampton, sings of the spectral exploits of Anne Boleyn.

Elizabeth - From The Prison To The Palace - Part 1 of 4 (British History Documentary) | Timeline
Check out our new website for more incredible history documentaries: HD and ad-free.
The first part focuses on Elizabeth’s early life - before her coronation she was disinherited, sexually abused and imprisoned, while Henry VIII had her mother executed. The sexual abuse coupled with the uprising by the Protestant Wyatt against Queen Mary, which led to Elizabeth’s imprisonment in the Tower of London, may have resulted in the Queen’s deep mistrust of men.
Elizabeth, the virgin Queen, the most powerful woman in English history. She emerged as a young princess against a backdrop of civil unrest, political intrigue, executions and coups. She ruled for 45 years and presided over a new kind of state. Her reign saw England emerge from the threat of European annexation to burst forth in a unique flowering of culture and became the world’s leading sea power. In this four part series David Starkey charts the rise and fall of her reign and reveals the powerful resonance it has for the present. This series covers one of the most glamorous and exciting reigns in English history, with bloodthirsty tales of sex, lust, murder and mayhem.

Camden Town - London Landmarks
Camden Town has been a residential area since the 1790s, but it was only the development of the Grand Union Canal and the improved railway transport that turned it into a bustling part of London. Today, visitors and locals gather to hunt for treasures in Camden's markets, stroll by Regent's Canal, gaze at the beautiful buildings, sample cuisine from around the world, listen to live music and soak up the vibrant and diverse atmosphere. Many famous people, including Dylan Thomas, Walter Sickert and Amy Winehouse, have made Camden their home.
Camden Markets
The labyrinthine open-air markets and myriad retail outlets of Camden will keep the keenest shoppers busy, with everything from vintage to futuristic designs on offer. The individual markets are:
- Camden Lock Market: Crafts, books, clothing, jewellery and fast food.
- Camden Lock Village: Clothing and accessories, as well as a range of unusual items.
- Camden Market: Originally Buck Street market, this sells fashion for all tastes.
- Inverness Street Market: A few of the original fruit stalls remain, alongside clothing, footwear and souvenirs.
- Stables Market: A mix of permanent shops and stalls selling household items, antiques, alternative clothing, food and much more.
There is also an indoor fashion market at the Electric Ballroom, which is only open on Sundays.
Food and Drink
Feeling peckish? You'll find food from around the globe at Camden's many eateries and street vendors. Going to a show at the Roundhouse? Try their pre-theatre menu. Check out top-quality burgers at Haché or pan-Asian cuisine at Gilgamesh, where you can stay on to enjoy the trendy bar and club.
You're never far from a bar in Camden. Try Scottish import BrewDog, the legendary Dublin Castle on Parkway or The World's End, opposite Camden Town Tube station (Northern line). Camden Town even has two breweries, Little Brew and Camden Town – look out for their excellent beers in local pubs.
Live Music in Camden
Camden has always been a hub for London's live music scene, with legendary venues that have launched many big names. Check out Koko, the Underworld and Electric Ballroom to catch the latest bands. You can also see top jazz and blues performances at the Jazz Café or the Blues Kitchen, while the Black Cap offers a glittering array of drag acts.
See theatrical performances from top UK companies such as the RSC, as well as films, art installations and gigs at the Roundhouse. You can also catch comedy at the Camden Highlight or see an eclectic mix of fringe performances at the Etcetera theatre.
Activities in and Around Camden Town
Check out edgy art exhibitions at the Cob Gallery, contemporary photography at Proud Camden or a huge range of modern visual arts at the highly-acclaimed Camden Arts Centre. You can explore Jewish life and heritage at the Jewish Museum.
If you’re looking for something a little more active, take the kids down to the Pirate Castle, where the whole family can enjoy a range of water-based activities. And there's always ZSL London Zoo – set within Regent's Park. It's great fun for kids and adults alike. From here, explore the area along the picturesque Regent's Canal. Trendy Primrose Hill is also well worth a visit not least for the spectacular city views from the top of the hill.

England's Forgotten Queen: Lady Jane Grey's Execution | History Documentary | Reel Truth History
Subscribe here: to be the first to watch more full length documentaries.
Eight days into her reign as Queen of England, Lady Jane Grey took personal charge of the keys to the Tower of London and even locked her own supporters inside with her. The end was approaching but before her execution, she wrote multiple messages in her prayer book. Historian Helen Castor explores these notes and learns that Lady Jane was actually unflinching and composed until the day she died.
In 1553 Tudor England, Wales and Ireland is taken to the brink of a bloody civil war when the dying King Edward VI, son of Henry VIII, leaves the throne, not to his elder sister, Mary, but to his cousin, the Lady Jane Grey.
This is a story of intrigue, conspiracy, political manoeuvring and a capital city preparing to be attacked. It is also the story of a young woman, ferociously manipulated by powerful men in the palace, who ends up losing her life as a result.
The life of Lady Jane Grey is a tragic narrative. From the moment Edward VI draws Jane into the line of succession, her terrible fate, on the block in the Tower of London, is sealed.
Helen Castor is a historian and a medievalist who has studied the She Wolves, those women who held power in various ways throughout the medieval period. Now she sets out to take a close look at the first woman to sit on the English throne, not as consort, but as a reigning Queen. But Helen discovers far more than a story about a Tudor Queen. The story of Jane Grey is surrounded by myth, confusion and propaganda. Images turn out not to be Jane, well known stories turn out to be fake and many of the books disagree on the details. Helen asks why the first woman to be proclaimed Queen of England has attracted so much bending of the truth.
Helen undertakes some Tudor detective work and turns back to the primary sources in an attempt to separate the truth from the fiction. She builds the real story of Jane Grey and those dark figures that surrounded her, tracing her world, and the nine days she spent on the throne.
