R-1194 - 177 acre farm for sale in WI 3 of 4
Restored farmhouse with new additions marries the charm of the past with the functionality and comfort of the present. Situated on 177 contiguous wooded acres in Southwest Wisconsin at the end of a private road invites thoughts of country home retreat, hunting paradise, bed and breakfast potential, and future significant timber value. In 1992, 60 acres were planted into a hardwood tree plantation featuring oak and black walnut trees. Over the last 23 years this plantation has been well managed, groomed, and pruned with the goal of producing veneer type trees that will one day reap a bountiful harvest. The last few years the plantation has been managed by a private forester and the DNR.
Originally built in 1906, the four-square farmhouse began the extensive restoration process in 1976. At that time new wiring, plumbing and drywall were added along with a wood burning fireplace in the living room. Since then in 2010, a new roof was installed and a well drilled. A new septic was added and in 2012, the house received 24 new windows. The main floor master bedroom with a private master bathroom and large walk-in closet was a new addition as was the four-season sunroom with a vaulted ceiling and a wall of windows to the south. The kitchen comes with all the appliances and has its own pantry. The living room and dining room have hardwood floors. The entire third floor is a 31x31 finished bonus room great for family activities or a man-cave. While the septic is sized for three-bedrooms, there are five rooms currently setup as bedrooms.
The mechanicals of the home feature a variety of heating and cooling options. The main heat source is a hot water radiant heating system providing clean radiant warmth to most of the home. There are three ductless central A/C heat pump units throughout the house that provide economical heating and cooling. There is a backup generator that can run the vitals of the house if there was ever a temporary power failure.
The outbuildings consist of a 24x16 shop with an extra thick concrete floor, three-phase electrical, and an industrial evacuation fan. The metal mill and lathe are included in the sale. The 60x26 tobacco barn has tin siding and a tin room and is great for storing all the equipment you'll need to care for this property. In the backyard is a 75x30 dog kennel with two individual 12x6 kennels with concrete floors.
The care of the tree plantation has not only resulted in wide trails planted in clover to access the various parts of the property, but it has created a haven for wildlife. Whether a new owner likes to observe nature or hunt, deer, large bucks, turkey and many other forms of wildlife are found here. Outdoor recreation such as hiking & cross country skiing are another advantage of this property. One hundred and sixty acres are in the closed managed forest land program providing low taxes, future income, and a healthy woods for a new owner. The 25-year program was entered into in January of 2014 so a buyout at this time would be minimal.
The home and outbuildings are on the ridge, but the land extends into the valleys as well. Located a short distance from the Mississippi River expands the recreational opportunities. The distance from larger cities - La Crosse 40 miles, Prairie Du Chien 30 miles, and Viroqua 18 miles, makes access to additional shopping and entertainment close at hand.

Welcome to Wisconsin
Today the average temperature here in Wisconsin was -18 with a wind chill of -40. So I decided to spend my day reminding myself why I love my home, Wisconsin. This video could also be a review of 2013 so, happy new years as well!
Lone Rock at Lone Rock Prairie outside of Footville Wisconsin
A long static recording of Lone Rock for fun. Lone Rock is an erosional standing rock formation. One theory is that it is an ancient large folgerite (a lightning strike captured in fused sandstone). As the softer unfused sandstone washed away Lone Rock was left. Around Lone Rock the lighter green areas are native hill prairie vegetation. The darker green areas are mostly invasive brush and brambles that need to be managed. The waving purple grass behind Lone Rock is native Big Bluestem, Andropogon gerardii, planted as a hay crop (monoculture), in the old cultivated row crop area. Lone Rock is south of the Wisconsin era glacier's terminal moraine, dates to an earlier glacial period (Illinoian?), and not the driftless area.

Burlington Northern (BN) was a major railroad in the United States. In 1996, only 26 years after the railroad was founded, it merged with ATSF, forming BNSF.

Food in the Garden 2014: The Great Lakes
The Great Lakes region was integral to the War of 1812, a front for several naval and land conflicts such as the assaults on Ft. Meigs and the Battle of Put-in-Bay. Once referred to as the Eden of the West, the Great Lakes region included hundreds of miles of untamed wilderness, rolling rivers, and dense forest encompassing modern day New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan. The region was home to the Chippewa, Ottawa, and Iroquois tribes, who valued the waterways as a means of life. With the increasing demand for elbow room, European-Americans began to extend their reach westward into relatively unfamiliar territory with the hope of thriving off of abundant, fertile land. With them came exotic and—in some cases—invasive species never before seen in the region such as apples, peaches, swine, and other fare that would come to define the region. How did the introductions of new plant and animal species affect the cultural foodways of the people who lived there and continue to live in the region today?
200 years later, this region is the cultural center of the Midwest with over 32 million people living along the lakes. Although early settlements have come and gone, many heirloom seeds native to this region have stood the test of time and there is an ever-present effort to preserve them, not only for consumption but for their cultural significant as well.
Panelists: Jodi Branton, National Museum of American Indian; Rick Finch, interim director of the Glenn Miller Birth Place Museum and former site manager of Fort Meigs: Ohio’s War of 1812 Battleground; and Tim Rose, geologist at the National Museum of Natural History and cider maker with Distillery Lane.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Fond du Lac (#501)
[Latest Airdate: September 20, 2018]
[Original Airdate: January 7, 2016]
John had expectations about Fond du Lac. He expected to find a city that is intertwined with Lake Winnebago. But he didn't expect wind surfing to be a year round sport, or that sturgeon spearing would be more like dinosaur hunting! Speaking of hunting, John didn't expect that talking to Wisconsin's turkey commander meant trekking through farm fields and sitting in a turkey blind. He also didn't expect to meet a dog sled musher or his 15 huskies, but once he was there, he knew he'd love the ride!
John did expect to walk about five miles while at Mercury Marine because who hasn't driven by and thought, THAT is a city! He expected Fond du Lac to offer good food (OK, that one is really more a demand than an expectation), and Schreiner's, Jim and Linda's Lakeview Supper Club and Kelley Country Creamery delivered.
He expected the memories to come flooding back when he got to Saint Lawrence Seminary. They did. He expected John Gurda to know the history and Mike McGivern to find a great prep sports team. They did. He expected the French name to mean Lake of Fondue. It doesn't.
Now you can expect to enjoy Fond du Lac --- we did!

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Jefferson (#803)
[Original Airdate: January 17, 2019[
In Jefferson, it’s all about Gemuetlichkeit. And even though an Irish guy like John couldn’t pronounce it, he sure could feel it! Who wouldn’t feel happy and welcome after walking through the renovated downtown, talking with plein air artists as they worked, visiting with Sister Grace at St. Colletta’s and eating Wedl’s hamburgers and Bon Ton’s bakery.
But John had some unique experiences that really defined the feeling. He sang with five G-Day Queens, hid the Mecki, watched the goats mow the island, and saw kittens being born at the Jefferson humane society! Believe him – there’s no place else with Jefferson’s Gemuetlichkeit!

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Hartford (#301)
[Latest Airdate: May 4, 2017]
[Original Airdate: January 9, 2014]
Such a terrific start for Season 3! Not every community actually has planes, trains and automobiles, but Hartford has all that and more one-of-a-kinds than we could even count. In addition to the Schauer Center and the Wisconsin Automotive Museum, you can grab a treat at Scoop deVille, a bite at the Mineshaft or a nap at one of the most comfortable B&B's we've ever seen. And there's big stuff in Hartford, too. Ever heard of Sno-Way? The people in China have. How about Broan-NuTone? Just look around your kitchen.
John thinks he may have discovered his true calling in Hartford, but don't worry parents, your children are safe. We won't let John get his CDL! But we won't stop him from future geocaching (but he will buy hiking boots before he does it again!), or from trying to coach the Dream Team dancers. Cheerleading is just in his blood, and John cheers loud for Hartford! Yay!
