Aspheric Light (2013) James Kelly
Aspheric Light (2013) 28' 2, HD digital video.
SYNOPSIS/DESCRIPTION:
Through visiting the studios of four potters, Adam Buick, Jack Doherty, Akiko Hirai and Gareth Mason, a journey is made through England and Wales, to meet those working with the form of the Korean Moon Jar in Britain today. The film focuses on the working processes of the potters, taking the viewer through the creation of their interpretations of the dal-hang-a-ri.
I sought to capture the makers' simultaneously delicate and powerful touch, through concentrating on the physical act of making, interspersed with captured imagery that seemed to echo the spellbinding call of the original object. So that what I filmed was simply the maker at work, not work done for the camera, it felt essential to give no direction or interfere or ask to repeat a moment missed. What I found by this method, through the selective eye of the viewfinder, that's power is as much if not more in what it hides as what it shows, were unpredicted, chance-caught moments which enter visual abstraction.
Commissioned by the Korean Cultural Centre UK, to screen alongside the exhibition 'Moon Jar: Contemporary Translations in Britain', 18 June - 17 August 2013. The British Museum's Moon Jar, acquired by Bernard Leach and passed on to Lucie Rie is the starting point and centre-piece of the exhibition.
BIOGRAPHY:
James Kelly is a video artist and sculptor, born in Dublin, Ireland in 1980, and is currently studying a Master of Fine Art course at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, London, UK.
Employing elements of magical reasoning, James Kelly's practice frequently considers humanity's disrupted and dissociated relationship with the land, through the recordings of activities in the landscape, touching upon the bizarre or seemingly purposeless, and the creation and use of tools and devices. Tools, not only as extensions of the body to facilitate certain tasks, but as items charged with their maker's intention, their seemingly inherent implied purpose and imbued with a force through a history of action recorded upon their surfaces.

Bottle to Boat - Part 3 - The Boat Builder I Hubbub Campaigns
Follow the journey as we build the world's first recycled plastic boat and launch #PlasticFishing to help clean plastic litter from waterways.
BOTTLE TO BOAT - PART 3 - THE BOAT BUILDER
Litter is an increasing issue in London’s Docklands and by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the sea. To tackle this issue we have made 'Poly-Mer', the world’s first recycled plastic boat made from 99% recycled plastic waste.
The challenge of turning heavy 'Plaswood' planks into something that would carry twelve people and float was given to master boatbuilder Mark Edwards MBE who built the Royal Barge Gloriana. For two months his boathouse in Richmond London, usually used to make traditional wooden boats, became the place that Poly-Mer took shape. Mark was committed to ensuring the boat was as sustainable as possible and so it is powered by an electric solar engine.
Poly-Mer is part of a new wave of #PlasticFishing trips that will take place in and around London's Docklands to fish plastic out of the river. The collected plastics will be used to make more boats creating a growing flotilla that will help clean our waterways whilst reminding people that plastic does have a value.
