This is a list of former or once proposed cathedrals in Great Britain. The term former cathedral in this list includes any Christian church in Great Britain which has been the seat of a bishop, but is not so any longer. The status of a cathedral, for the purpose of this list, does not depend on whether the church concerned is known to have had a formal throne nor whether a formal territory or diocese was attached to the church. Before the development of dioceses, which began earlier in England than in Scotland and Wales, [s]uch bishops as there were either lived in monasteries or were 'wandering bishops'. This list therefore includes early bishop's churches . A former cathedral may be the building that lost its cathedral status or its site, whether now vacant or not. The loss of status may be because that bishopric is extinct, or was relocated. Sometimes a new cathedral was built near an older one, with the older building then used for other purposes, or demolished. Such a building or site counts as a former cathedral. Where a cathedral is modified or rebuilt on substantially the same site in a series of developments over time, the earlier versions are not counted here as former cathedrals. A former pro-cathedral is a church or former church which was once a temporary cathedral officially performing that role until its expected replacement by an intended permanent cathedral took place, usually by completion of a new cathedral built for that purpose. A once proposed cathedral is a church which was on some past occasion proposed as a future cathedral, but for some reason that particular proposal failed. In some cases, a later proposal succeeded and the church then became the seat of a bishop .

Leominster

Leominster is a market town in Herefordshire, England, north of the city of Hereford. Part of the Black & White Trail, Leominster is the largest of the five towns (Leominster, Ross-on-Wye, Ledbury, Bromyard & Kington) in the county surrounding the City of Hereford. Its Priory Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, which now serves as the parish church, is the remaining part of a 12th-century Benedictine monastery

St Peter and St Paul, Weobley, Herefordshire

A ring of 6, 17-0-14 in E. In interesting ring of 6 with the Tenor dating back from the 16th Century. I personally think that they are a little dissapointing, they go ok but the sound isn't the best from inside the ringing chamber... They sound a lot better outside according to some, although I haven't heard them outside unfortunately.

Great Malvern Priory explored

The Priory Church of St. Mary & St. Michael in Malvern, Worcestershire was my final stop during the two months spent in England. The priory was originally built as a Benedictine Monastery in 1085 on land belonging to Westminster Abbey. Upon the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1540 under King Henry VIII, the citizens of the town raised £20 and bought the building in 1541 to replace their dilapidated parish church.
Over the centuries, extensions & re-modelling have altered the look of the building, but the original Norman architecture is still much in evidence.

The church is known for having the largest display of 15th century stained glass in England, a large collection of medieval floor and wall tiles, together with numerous fine monuments & memorials. The effigies of John Knottsford, servant of King Henry VIII who died in 1589, his wife Jane and their daughter, Anne. The recumbent figure of Sophie Thomson, circa 1838 by Peter Hollins are amongst the finest.

Of particular note, the medieval misericords dating back to the 14 & 15th centuries. The carvings include scenes from daily life, satirical & allegorical subjects, beasts and the months of the year.

Birmingham is one of England's principal industrial centres and has a history of industrial and scientific innovation. It was once known as 'city of a thousand trades' and in 1791, Arthur Young (the writer and commentator on British economic life) described Birmingham as the first manufacturing town in the world. Right up until the mid-19th century Birmingham was regarded as the prime industrial urban town in Britain and perhaps the world, the town's rivals were more specific in their trade bases. Mills and foundries across the world were helped along by the advances in steam power and engineering that were taking place in the city. The town offered a vast array of industries and was the world's leading manufacturer of metal ware, although this was by no means the only trade flourishing in the town.By the year 2000, of the 4,000 inventions copyrighted in the UK, 2,800 came from within a 35-mile radius of Birmingham. Peter Colegate of the Patent Office stated that Every year, Birmingham amazes us by coming up with thousands of inventions. It is impossible to explain but people in the area seem to have a remarkable ability to come up with, and have the dedication to produce, ideas.While the time line of industry and innovation listed below is extensive, it is by no means a comprehensive list of Birmingham's industrial and scientific achievements, more a guide to highlight the great diversity in the city's industrial might, which can still be seen today.
