Star violinist and King of the Waltz André Rieu co-hosts a Euromaxx Special
Star violinist and composer André Rieu helped us to design this very special edition of Euromaxx, which is all about music. The King of the Waltz tells us why he loves to play waltzes and why music can make people happy. We even pay a visit to his own castle in Maastricht, The Netherlands. To take a closer look at the life and career of André Rieu, go to 2:16; to learn why maestro Rieu likes Rome so much, watch 8:05; check if young people are still dancing the waltz at 13:16 and find out why music is making people happy at 19:26. This edition of Euromaxx with André Rieu is the second in a line of six special editions of DW's lifestyle magazine. Other shows feature star photographer RANKIN, Italian fashion designer Lavinia Biagiotti, star chef Tim Raue, product designer Marcel Wanders and award-winning architect David Chipperfield. Celebrating the East Building Twentieth-Century Art Series, Part 6: German and Austrian Expressionis
David Gariff, senior lecturer, National Gallery of Art. At the turn of the 20th century Germany and Austria were full of volatile contradictions. They were modernizing rapidly yet maintained deeply conservative values. This was fertile ground for the birth of German and Austrian expressionism, represented by the paintings of Max Beckmann, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Franz Marc, Emil Nolde, and Egon Schiele, among others. A gift from the Arnold and Joan Saltzman Collection has transformed the National Gallery of Art’s holdings of German and Austrian expressionist art. As part of the series Celebrating the East Building: 20th-Century Art, senior lecturer David Gariff explores the vital role that German and Austrian expressionism played in the opening decades of the 20th century. This lecture was presented on July 26, 2018, at the National Gallery of Art.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills

SUMMARY
=======
Vienna ( (listen); German: Wien, pronounced [viːn] (listen)) is the federal capital and largest city of Austria, and one of the nine states of Austria. Vienna is Austria's primate city, with a population of about 1.9 million (2.6 million within the metropolitan area, nearly one third of Austria's population), and its cultural, economic, and political centre. It is the 7th-largest city by population within city limits in the European Union. Until the beginning of the 20th century, it was the largest German-speaking city in the world, and before the splitting of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in World War I, the city had 2 million inhabitants. Today, it has the second largest number of German speakers after Berlin. Vienna is host to many major international organizations, including the United Nations and OPEC. The city is located in the eastern part of Austria and is close to the borders of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary. These regions work together in a European Centrope border region. Along with nearby Bratislava, Vienna forms a metropolitan region with 3 million inhabitants. In 2001, the city centre was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In July 2017 it was moved to the list of World Heritage in Danger.Apart from being regarded as the City of Music because of its musical legacy, Vienna is also said to be The City of Dreams because it was home to the world's first psychoanalyst – Sigmund Freud. The city's roots lie in early Celtic and Roman settlements that transformed into a Medieval and Baroque city, and then the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is well known for having played an essential role as a leading European music centre, from the great age of Viennese Classicism through the early part of the 20th century. The historic centre of Vienna is rich in architectural ensembles, including Baroque castles and gardens, and the late-19th-century Ringstraße lined with grand buildings, monuments and parks.Vienna is known for its high quality of life. In a 2005 study of 127 world cities, the Economist Intelligence Unit ranked the city first (in a tie with Vancouver and San Francisco) for the world's most liveable cities. Between 2011 and 2015, Vienna was ranked second, behind Melbourne. In 2018, it replaced Melbourne as the number one spot. For eight consecutive years (2009–2016), the human-resource- ...
Prom
In the United States, and increasingly in the United Kingdom and Canada, prom (short for promenade) is a semi-formal (black tie) dance or gathering of high school students. This event is typically held near the end of the senior year (i.e., the last year of high school). Prom figures greatly in popular culture and is a major event among high school students. High school juniors attending the prom may call it junior prom while high-school seniors may call it senior prom or senior ball. In practice, this event may be a combined junior/senior dance.
At prom, a Prom Queen and Prom King may be revealed. These are honorary titles awarded to students elected in a school-wide vote prior to the prom, and seniors are usually awarded these titles. Juniors may also be honored, but would be called Prom Prince or Prom Princess. Other students may be honored with inclusion in a Prom Court. The selection method for Prom Court is similar to that of Homecoming Queen/Princess, King, and Court. Inclusion in a Prom Court may be a reflection of popularity of those students elected and their level of participation in school activities, such as clubs or sports. The Prom Queen and Prom King may be given crowns to wear. Members of the Prom Court may be given sashes to wear and photographed together.

University Challenge S47E03 Southampton vs Cardiff
Hi everyone, I'm really sorry for the delay in uploading, but as I expected last week, these three days have been really busy. If it is any consolation, the match this week has one team fell flat on its face. Well, either of the teams from Southampton University and University of Cardiff has a really bad stage fright, because one of them just can't buzz, despite, I suspect, is moderately capable. Hope for better luck for next week's teams. Original air date 31.7.2017
Gustav Klimt - the Art of an Imperial Austrian Symbolist Art Nouveau Painter
To bring recognition to his fine art masterpieces, let's commemorate Gustav Klimt's 150th year from his birth day. Happy 150th Birthday!!
This mini featurette is a tribute created for the love of his exquisite art, one of which I like so dearly is that of a painting of lovers he painted at the age of 45, called The Kiss. The art images, reproduction images, his unfinished painting 'Adam and Eve', and Google's doodle to honor his 150th Birthday are all presented in an imagery layout with music I personally chose as it is my favorite composed by Klimt's fellow Austrian composer Johann Strauss II waltz Voices of Spring (Frühlingsstimmen). I opted out off my first music choices I like which were by Klimt's fellow Austrian friend composer, conductor, and Vienna Court Opera director Gustav Mahler symphonies but instead used Strauss II's music for this.

The Sound Of Music
Rodgers & Hammerstein's® cinematic treasure, The Sound of Music is the winner of five Academy Awards®, including Best Picture. In this true-life story, Julie Andrews lights up the screen as Maria, a spirited young Austrian woman who leaves the convent to become a governess for Captain von Trapp's (Christopher Plummer) seven unruly children. Her charm and songs soon win the hearts of the children -- and their father. But when Nazi Germany unites with Austria, Maria is forced to attempt a daring escape with her new family.

Global Gypsy: Balkan Romani Music, Appropriation & Representation
In the last twenty years, Balkan Gypsy music has exploded in popularity, becoming a staple at world music festivals and dance clubs throughout the United States and Western Europe. At the same time, thousands of Balkan Roma (the ethnic group frequently referred to as Gypsies) have emigrated westward due to deteriorating living conditions, and entrenched stereotypes have arisen amidst deportations and harassment. In this heightened atmosphere of xenophobia, Roma, as Europe’s largest minority and its quintessential other, face the paradox that they are revered for their music yet reviled as people. Focusing on clubs and festivals, this illustrated ethnographic presentation investigates the ramifications of the current scene for Romani performers and non-Romani musicians, producers, audiences and marketers.

F. Scott Fitzgerald - Original The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Plot summary -
Benjamin is born with the physical appearance of a 70-year-old man, already able to speak. His father Roger invites neighborhood boys to play with him and orders him to play with children's toys, but Benjamin only obeys to please his father. At five, Benjamin is sent to kindergarten but is quickly withdrawn after he repeatedly falls asleep during child activities.
When Benjamin turns 12, the Button family realizes that he is aging backward. At the age of 18, Benjamin enrolls in Yale College but having run out of hair dye on the day of registration, is sent home by officials, who think he is a 50-year-old lunatic.
In 1880, Benjamin is 20, his father gives him a control of Roger Button & Co. Wholesale Hardware. He meets Hildegarde Moncrief, a daughter of General Moncrief, and falls in love with her at the first sight. Hildegarde mistakes Benjamin for a 50-year old younger brother of Roger Button, and without realizing the fact of Benjamin's abnormality, the two get married six months later. Years later, Benjamin's business has been a great success, but his family life hasn't been well for him. Benjamin starts to get tired of Hildegarde because she's a nagging woman that is no longer beautiful as before. His family life is so boring that he joins the Spanish-American War in 1898. He had a great success in the military, ranked up to lieutenant colonel, and rewarded with a medal. He then quits the military because his company requires his care.
In 1910, Benjamin turns over control of his company to his son, Roscoe, and enrolls at Harvard University, having the appearance of a twenty-year-old. His first year at Harvard is a great success, and he is dominant in American football, notably obtaining revenge against Yale for his earlier unpleasant experience. However, by the time Benjamin reaches his last 2 years, he is a weak sixteen-year-old, unable to play football and barely able to cope with the academic load.
After graduation, Benjamin returns home, only to learn his wife has moved to Italy. He lives with Roscoe, who treats him very sternly, making Benjamin call him Uncle in front of his house guests. As the years progress, Benjamin turns from a moody teenager into a young child. Eventually Roscoe has a child that later attends kindergarten with Benjamin. After kindergarten, Benjamin slowly begins to lose memory of his earlier life. His memory fades away to the point where he cannot remember anything except his nurse. Then everything fades to darkness.
A story with a similar plot was published in 1921 by the Austrian author Roda Roda in Die sieben Leidenschaften (The seven tempers)(Rikola Verlag, Vienna 1922) under the title Antonius de Padua Findling. (Summary adapted from wikipedia. org)
