Rebecca Rockefeller Lambert descends from a lineage of land preservationists on a very large and public scale. But from within this legacy of earth-saving she has discovered the power of letting the earth save you. In this poetic talk Rebecca reveals her personal journey and invites us to see our relationship with environmentalism in a new light.
A scion of the Rockefeller family, Rebecca grew up wanting to save the world. Through her education, board service, philanthropy, and career she tackled environmental problems and championed human rights. But five years ago she left her job as a climate and energy planner and fasted alone in the desert. This three-day quest, and the experiences that followed, turned her perspective upside down. She is still passionate about environmental conservation and justice, but she is even more interested in cultural transformation. She’s curious about the cultural proclivities that put humans at odds with the rest of nature, and she’s on the hunt for practices and perspectives that seed cultural change. Rebecca now guides retreats for environmental leaders and others to help them connect with their calling, learn from nature, and mark transitions in their lives. Rebecca is a mother, an artist, a philanthropist and an avid rock climber.

Join us on October 18 when the four Lincoln County candidates who are running for the Maine State legislature will discuss the local issues that really matter. The first half of the event is dedicated to the debate. The second half, audience members will be allowed to ask questions directly to the candidates. The event is free and open to the public and will be held at the Opera House at Boothbay Harbor. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Vinny Carbone, Paranormal Investigator- Vinny’s fascination with the paranormal began as a childhood fear of the unknown. As he grew older, he discovered that by investigating and ultimately facing that which scares him has often resulted in a new-found respect of that topic, as well as a sense of accomplishment. Originally from Southampton, NY (Long Island), Vinny attended the State University of New York, College at Brockport where he developed a passion for performance as well as theater administration and directing. It was while attending college where his causal interest in the paranormal became an obsession after an inexpiable encounter while working in his dorm late one evening. Upon graduating in 2010 with a BS in Theater and a BA in Communications, he pursued several acting and directing opportunities throughout New York State. In the spring of 2014, Vinny became a licensed New York State EMT as a means of survival while pursuing various artistic endeavors. In the Fall of 2015, his paranormal site-specific play, AWAKENING IN INK premiered at the Morris-Jumel Mansion Museum in Manhattan, New York and was credited as being An enjoyable and enlightening production unlike any you will experience in New York City by blogcritics.org. Due to the success of this production, Vinny was offered a full-time position at the museum where he is still employed as the Public Programming and Events Manager and serves as the resident playwright and director as well as paranormal investigator.
Qualifications: Currently based in New York City, Vinny has been seriously investigating claims of the paranormal throughout the US since 2011. He has been featured on numerous media outlets such as Travel Channel’s “Haunted USA”, FOX News, the Weather Channel’s “United States of Awesome”, the New Learning Times vlog series Seen In NY, Vialogues.com, the Metro Newspaper (NYC), and Lapham's Quarterly. He has also appeared on several podcasts including, DNAinfo.com's This Is New York, “The Bodega Podcast”, “All Possibilities Podcast”, “Did You Hear The One”, “The New York Dose”, and “The Well Attended Podcast”. Vinny have also facilitated lectures at Columbia University's Teachers College, the Q.E.D. Learning Space, The Dark Side of the Con Gothic Festival & Convention, and the Morris-Jumel Mansion museum in New York City, where he leads monthly paranormal investigations open to the public wanting to learn more about the topic.
As both an independent investigator and as a proud co-director of Gotham Paranormal Research Society (TAPS Family Member), Vinny approaches all claims of the paranormal with a sense of the utmost respect and dignity while maintaining an appropriate sense of humor and logic. He welcomes every opportunity to further the discussion of the unknown with members of all communities, especially the most steadfast skeptic.

USM President Glenn Cummings sits down with Patsy Thompson-Leavitt, assistant professor of nursing and nursing lecturer Ashley Korenkiewicz to talk about the need for more nurses in Maine and the ways in which USM is working to resolve that. We also hear from Michael Hillard and two of his Food Studies students about Maine's growing food economy. And finally, Cummings talks with Carlos Lück, associate professor of electrical engineering, plus two USM engineering alumni, about the growing demand for skilled engineers in Maine and how USM's ever-expanding program can meet it.

The Maine Army National Guard is a component of the United States Army and the United States National Guard. Nationwide, the Army National Guard comprises approximately one half of the US Army's available combat forces and approximately one third of its support organization. National coordination of various state National Guard units are maintained through the National Guard Bureau. The Guard is administered by the adjutant general, an appointee of the governor of Maine. The Constitution of the United States specifically charges the National Guard with dual federal and state missions. Those functions range from limited actions during non-emergency situations to full scale law enforcement of martial law when local law enforcement officials can no longer maintain civil control.
Maine's Army National Guard units are trained and equipped as part of the United States Army. The same ranks (enlisted/officer) and insignia are used and National Guardsmen are eligible to receive all United States military awards. The Maine Guard also bestows a number of state awards for local services rendered in or to the state of Maine.
The current adjutant general for the Maine National Guard is Brigadier General Douglas A. Farnham.The Maine Army National Guard is composed of 48 units spread across approximately 29 armories and is present in 26 communities in Maine. The headquarters is located in Camp Keyes, Augusta, ME.

The joint Army/Air Guard team can self-sustain for 72 hours of continuous operation and is constantly training to stay on top of the technology and techniques for sampling, evidence collection, identification, and education of the possibilities that the team may be alerted for.

Stories About Migration: Garth Meyers
The Kansas African Studies Center at the University of Kansas hosted a public forum highlighting the possibilities for meaningful conversation about immigration through the sharing of stories. The forum took place at 7 p.m. May 9 at Unity Temple on the Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri. This community gathering began with presentations by three speakers, followed by a moderated public discussion on the challenges and opportunities that arise from recent demographic changes in the Midwest.
The forum brought together acclaimed Nigerian novelist and poet Chris Abani, Northwestern University; distinguished cultural geographer Garth Myers, Trinity College, Connecticut, and nationally recognized expert on Latino/a migrant experiences Marta Caminero-Santangelo, University of Kansas.
Teleconferencing technology connected an audience in Garden City with the forum in Kansas City and enable dialogue between the two communities, both of which are hubs of recent resettlement for Africans in the Midwest.
The forum is a central component of a Kansas African Studies Center initiative funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities to facilitate the sharing of migration stories about Africans in local communities through public discussions, community programming and the creation of educational resources.
With close to 10,000 African immigrants living today in the heartland metropolitan centers of Kansas City, Lawrence, Topeka, Emporia, Wichita and Garden City, the project will offer extended and productive dialogue surrounding shifting demographics due to migration. In addition to the public forum, community programming will include humanities workshops in storytelling, poetry, theatre and visual art. The Kansas African Studies Center is partnering with the Kansas Humanities Council and the Kansas City public radio station KCUR to sponsor radio shows, film and book discussions, and engaging talks that reveal the power of migration stories.
“This project gives voice to the recent experiences of African families while also asking local residents of host communities to share their narratives about receiving new African immigrants into their cities and towns,” said Elizabeth MacGonagle, director of the Kansas African Studies Center. “By harnessing the power of compelling stories, we aim to increase understanding across civic and cultural divides in heartland spaces to build healthy communities for the common good.”
Funding for the initiative comes from a new program of the National Endowment for the Humanities called Humanities in the Public Square where humanities scholars engage in direct dialogue with the public about some of today’s most pressing issues. “The humanities are one of the best ways of engaging people in conversations about the demographic and cultural shifts taking place in our communities,” said Byron Caminero-Santangelo, professor of English and environmental studies and interim director of the Kansas African Studies Center. “Social science research on migration has documented the ebbs and flows of movement, but this project emphasizes the widespread significance of the humanities to current national conversations about immigrants and migration.”
